Just thought I might ask; does anybody of you know of any symphony metal bands similiar to Rhapsody or Nightwish? (And no, I think Evanescence is actually some sort of pop, so don't give me that!
(It's good, but I already own their stuff, so... ))

I only know of Nightwish - but will now be looking up Rhapsody. Nightwish are fantastic. I saw them live in london earlier this year. I was part deaf when I left, but it was such a good night!

I too like Nightwish, but they are the only symphonic metal band I listen to.

I am a huge Nightwish fan. I have their end of an era concert dvd and
I will be going to see them next time they tour.

@Nicholas Thompson : I didn't know they had done any gigs this year with the departure of Tarja Turunen?

These bands are alright, but not exactly my style. There's a 'song' by Jason Becker called Speed Metal Symphony, I have to admit, some bits sound horrible, but the rest is genuis.

Symphony-X "V - The Mythology Suite", hands down. It has a slightly more Progressive Metal vibe than Rhapsody, but it's an awesome symphonic metal album.

Any of the Luca Turilli (Rhapsody's guitarrist) solo albums is good too.

I have vague plans for World Domination

Symphony X rules, so does Nightwish and Rhapsody, um Aina, look into it, within temptation for a more mainsteam style.

Go to Last fm (Click on my sig) and download their player and find music/tags that falls under 'symphonic metal' and play that radio station and you'll find some.

@Nicholas Thompson: Indeed

@Saikoro: Never heard of; sounds like a strange name...

Quote: "@Nicholas Thompson : I didn't know they had done any gigs this year with the departure of Tarja Turunen?
"

Wasn't that sometime around march or so; perhaps he was there earlier this year?

@Zotoaster: I might check that one up, thanks

@Miguel: Now that sounds kind of interresting.
Shall see if I can find anything with them
About mr. Turilli, I can't seem to find any stuff with him around the shops where I live (tried before ;( )

@Musashi: Within Temptation seems good from what I've heard (which is maybe 3 songs over radio, but anyways); however I've only heard ballads.
Is that the only thing they do, or...?
(Not that there's anything wrong with ballads)
Will see if I can come by some album by them and see
Will check your link, also.

@Jack: Whoa, I always wondered what the lyrics really were in that song (*lol*) ;P

It was on the 21st October last year, after they played the Hartwall arena in Helsinki

Here is the dated open letter given to her by Tuomas Holopainen:

Ok,

Luca Turilli-Rhapsodys guitarist. Hard to get hold of, you may need to buy online.

Epica-Better than Nightwish IMO, I got Consign to Oblivion today. It's amazing. They're much more orchestral based than most symphonic metal though, with less emphasis on the guitars.

Within Temptation- Iffy. What I've heard off their Mother Earth album is great, but apparently ther new stuff is a bit evanescency. Mother Earth, Ice Queen and Dark Wings (songs) are awesome though.

[Edit]

Wow, if that letter's anything to go by, Tarja's a bitch!

@Bahamut: Whoa, Epica's great!
I got An Epic Journey today, allthough, I wouldn't call it metal at all, since it's just played by an orchestra =P
But as said, it's great; thanks for letting me know of them; will probably get Consign to Oblivion if I can find it

Epica isn't just an orchestra, they're a band with a backing orchestra. They're technically metal but it's more of a loose term.

She's Finnish, hence Nightwish performed for Finlind in 2001 for the Eurovision song contest (And Lordi this year taking the 1st place for the Finnish, loving it!)

Nightwish is awesome. Symphony X is great too. They've got michael angelo (the guitarist not the ninja turtle.) I think Dream Theater does melodic rock, but not too symphonic though.

Mostly stuff from that area giving credit to Sweeden as well. Children of Bodom, Lordi, Opeth, In Flames, Katatonia you know the lot But then you get pretty much top quality music from all over the place, although I've listened to a lot (I mean a lot) of Sweedish/Finnish music recently.

@Bahamut: I noticed that there's a band on Consign to Oblivion; however, there wasn't any (that I heard, more than in the last track) on An Epic Journey.

CoB are Finnish. As are Kalmah, Nightwish, Finntroll, Lordi (not that good imo), Sinergy, Thunderstone, Ensiferum, Turisas and loads of other metal acts. So, erm, yeah...other than Old In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and a few others (mostly power metal or melodeath), Finland>Sweden.

Oh yeah, Luca Turilli's Dreamquest is symphonic metal. It's like his usual stuff (epic, loads of keyboards etc.) but this time with a female vocalist. Apparently she's called "myst" and her true identity is under speculation. Kinda like the Stig from Top Gear. I can't recommend it unfortunately because I haven't heard any of their songs.

[edit]

Oh, and Kamelot. They're technically Power Metal, but quite symphonic. They're really iffy though. Some of their stuff is great, some not so great. I recommend getting the free songs off their website first. Starting with Center of the Universe is probably your best bet.

I know I was just naming quality Finnish bands with the Swedish ones, guess I should have worded it a bit better...Also you reminded me, Sinergy is another quality band, something people should look up, they suprising did a good version to Abba's Gimm Gimme Gimme, as did Children of Bodom to Britney Spears.

@Benjamin: Just meant that it's a pretty small country, and still so it seems to have more of that stuff than most of the US. (It probably doesn't, but more well-known at least).

@Bahamut: I think I've heard that Tuomas of Nightwish lived in Sweden earlier. Nothing confirmed about that though, think I heard it in school some years ago.
Dreamquest also sounds interresting, by the way.
