First off, I do remember seeing a post a while back containing tonnes of reg image links and such, but I've been searching for 10 minutes straight and couldn't find anything, including searching google and turbo squid, so Im resorting to the 2D Graphic Guru's for help.

Basically, lately I've been tuning my modelling skills and have picked up on my own "take" on reference image modelling. It requires 2 images, a front and a side, and possibly a top/bottom if possible, Im not saying I've invented the process or anything, I know its been around for ages, Ive just found a good way of using the method to get a pretty good model in the end, and im looking into writing a small tutorial on doing so.

The only thing I need is a basic front/side (and like I said, top/bottom doesnt hurt) image of a human male, female, robot, whatever, as long as it looks relatively "human". The image can be a photo of a real person, a drawing from paper, a quick mockup from paint, anything goes really, the main importance is the outline of the figure. It doesnt have to be symmetrical as I can handle that, but the figure should be in the standard concept art pose, where their arms are out to the side and the legs are pointing diagonally outwards.

Also, if the image lines up at all of the main points, where the shoulders are at the same height, the knees, the eyes, etc, thatll help a heck of a lot as well.

Thats quite a bit to ask for so I understand if nobody feels like going for it, but to make it a bit more worth while (depends on how you look at it ) Ill offer my time in (attempting) to model/uv map anything you want for a week, weather you'll like the models or not is another thing

Anyways, even if nobody can provide some art, if anyone has any good links to websites or other forum posts I couldnt find searching please post them up.

Extremely sorry if I missed a blatantly obvious forum post giving this, thanks a tonne in advance;

- RUC'

<EDIT>

And I know, beggers cant be chosers, but itd be great if the image looked good too

This thread?

It was in the 3d forum but fell off the front page a good few weeks ago. Hope it helps - there was a lot of nice stuff (mostly front images) from many people in that.

(I don't know where this rumour that I can model came from. *shrugs*) Anyway, if you're really too busy then there's no problem, but there was something that you could model for me - I'd like a Bessemer Convertor Warbot made If you're wondering what the heck I'm on about - that's ok.
http://ccgi.firewyre.force9.co.uk/brassgoggles/?p=56
That link has pictures of Bessemer Convertors on it, and it struck me as something that really should be made into a stompy, clompy, clumsy bot or Victorian-mech. I was thinking low poly (500?), suitable for games (.X file) with limbed legs and a hatch in the top. Added doo-dads and thingumybobs welcome, I just like the general shape.

However, I'm not too fussed if you'd find that tiresome, and if you'd rather do something else, then I'd be very happy if you made something for the OMMORPG project instead. They always welcome donations of art

I did this just to test my abilities that I don't have lol. I can't model, but I though it looked cool, so I went with it.

Edit: I put different file types in a zip. I only heard of 3 of those. The rest I had no idea but thought maybe you'd like them in that. Also, it's untextured.

Sorry about not modelling it like I said I would, I will get to it its just I've had some other things I've needed to deal with.

<EDIT>

Ok, here it is so far, but Ill probably make it more cartoony and "character" ish since right now it just looks like a machine...

Nice start, RUCCUS - and I'm always a fan of light-tracer rendering of untextured stuff. Certainly looks like it has potential - is the hatch on the top still a seperate element/object for future use? If I were being really naughty, I'd ask for a hollow-ed out bit under the hatch, no detail, just a cylinder. If not, then a textured black circle to represent the hole would be ace.

Thanks so far!

No problem, I just seperated the hatch and did a few extrusions down for that cylinder bit you wanted. The only problem is if I try to make it look more like a robot that could actually "do" something, ang less like an oiltank with legs... the polycount might go near 1000.

Its up to you, maybe you could do a draw over if you have any ideas or changes you want made, I was thinking that cylinder extrusion on the bottom would be like a jet pack... rocket thing, where fire would come out. And he'd either need a re-designed foot shape or wheels on the bottom if he has any hopes of moving without rocket fuel .

Also, I was thinking the main body is a bit high, its the same height as in the picture but in terms of a robot fighting thingy, it could come down a bit IMO.

And... maybe I should add an eye? Like R2-D2 has a little lense on the front, OH and would you like the top half of the body to be seperate so it can rotate around seperately from the body? (Once again like R2-D2).

or would you rather I just model R2-D2?

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, been surprisingly busy with my page.

Anyway, done a little smudgy drawover of the image - just basically I'd like a pillbox style opening in the front, and maybe some hinged 'toes' at the front (to explain the walking ability). Could you give me a rough polycount for it at the moment? Ta.

I don't really want R2 though - as desperately cool as he is

ATM hes about 500 polies, but I havent worked on reducing any at all so I could probably get it down. If all you want added is that draw over you did then the polycount wont be increasing by much , maybe 30 or so more Id say.

Don't sweat too much about reducing the polycount much, RUCCUS - it might be more work for you than it's worth. And I'm sure I've run out of that 'one week of modelling' by now
The things in the drawover would be quite enough to add to it - nothing too complex right now. If I want to go bonkers, I can add some bones and prop some big silly Aether Guns or Steampowered Gatling Guns to 'his' shoulders later Thanks again for what you've done so far!

Ok Tinker Im soooo sorry it took so long, I should've owned up to my promis but I just got too caught up with other things and forgot about the model.

Anyways I finished it, but its rushed so I dont blame you if you dont like it, here's a shot;

The texture was done pretty quick but anyways the models' in the download, inside the rar is;

- .x model
- .3ds model
- uv map
- texture

Once again Im soooooo sorry, from now on Ill make sure I do what I promise people first and then deal with other things, im not sure how I can make it up to you, ATM im working on modelling my neighborhood and during that time Im making a tonne of city models (dumpsters, garbage cans, boxes, lght posts, telephone poles, cars, etc), if you'd like Id be happy to give you those models for free (as long as you agree that I could give them for free to others as well) or maybe I could model something else for you? I dunno, if you think of something do tell.

Wont happen again,

Chill, RUCCUS Thank you very much for the model - it's greatly appreciated, rushed or otherwise. You were very kind to offer to make a model for me at all, and beggers can't be choosers. Don't feel you need to make anything up to me - you've got stuff to do, and I don't want to slow you down from your city modelling. The model is exactly what I asked for - and I can't ask for more than that. Do you want to name it?

I hope you've noticed Jonny Ree's character reference post in the 3d boards - if he'd been along a bit earlier, I'm sure that would have been useful for your original question too.
