Well guys its October. Fall is just getting started and winters closing in. I have some updates and some old news.

1. First order of business is our Ninja Game. We are still in the process of building it and naming it but we are open to suggestions for names. At the moment we only have 5 levels made but hope to have more. If there is anyone here who would be willing to help me with this game, maybe design or make a few levels that would be a huge help.

2. Second is our newsletter. I didn't get a chance to make one for last month. I'm not sure if Keith made one either but I haven't had much time lately to put one together so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me out with the newsletter? If you have something you would like to add please feel free to post it here. If you would like to write an article for our newsletter please PM it to me.

3. Games, I really have been busy with a lot of things lately and haven had much time to work but I hope to at least finish the ninja game by the end of the month. Even if I do finish it this month I don't plan on releasing it until NinjaSoft Games 1 Year Anniversary on November 25th.

Well It make me happy to see a busy person like you would take the time to read a post like mine. It means a lot Rich. But for the most part not much has been accomplished you right but, I have made a little progress on my ninja game. Rich if you dont mind I whould like to put some Dark Basic updates in my next newsletter.

Forums take time and committment in order to foster a solid membership. We are still quite young, compared to others, but we are slowly gaining a solid base of users. I don't think there is really a "formula" to creating an effective forum/site (as far as attracting users); but dedication is definately required. Originality is important in order to separate yourself from the plethora of sites out there; it also shows people you're serious about succeeding.

Talking bad about someone's work isn't always the best thing to do; but you can use it to be more effective. You can't take things too seriously in our field (after all, we make games); of course you shouldn't take someone badgering you either.

Using other members' forums/sites as a guide to starting your own is a good way to start; but you never want to copy someone's work "word-for-word" either.

Anyways, I'm just rambling on here....

Just a question: Why do you post updates here every month? If everyone did that every month we'd have 3 or 4 pages of threads with just that. If we wanted to know what you were up to, wouldn't we go to your site? If you have a new game, maybe you can update us in the program announcements forum?

Sorry for the short little cold "ok", but it was just my way of saying "we don't care". Don't get me wrong - if anyone here ever has something to say, or an announcment to make, go right ahead and make a thread. It's Geek Culture afterall, so not like it matters. But as Rich said, your entire thread was about nothing at all. It's just a bunch of "going to's" and "coming soons".

And about the name - I just felt a change was long overdue. I didn't feel like using my real name is it tends to confuse people, so I created a new net nickname that pretty much most of my work will go under from now on.

Keep working on your stuff.

it really depends on how your developing your site.
for example at work i would use dreamweaver to manage the sites content but write the css file by hand.

CSS is a bugger at the moment because IE and FF do not behave the same way.
Your going to have to deploy the !important tag to some parts of your style sheet to get around some IE issues.

I only stated that the newsletter is bad. Where I am from "sucks" isnt harmful. Someone taking it in that way, especially over the internet, is pretty emotionally shielded. At least I stated why I thought it was bad... I guess though you could take it in several different ways. I hate multi-culturalism=P

the content layout has improved.
however each page has a different location for the components that should be in the same place each time the page is changed.
eg: the page title and page numbers are different over each page.
the last article looks rushed and the url linking hasnt worked yet. at least the linking doesnt work on macs pdf viewer.

good start so far but the size of the document makes me think some of the graphics used in the document could be reduced in filesize. create a better layout and things will improve.

Thanks for the link, Indi; I forgot about Tutorialized.com. I want to do more than just create all the graphics for our site one of these days; I'd like to use Dreamweaver/Fireworks as well. Right now I'm using a WYSIWYG web page maker, all the graphics are custom (site has yet to be uploaded).

Ok, to give a fair judgement, I decided to go visit your site, and will it looks like it's pretty well organized, I think you have chosen irrisponsible mods. All they do is abuse their powers by editing users posts to make comments, like in this thread:

I think it lacks authority and purpose, authority because of threads like this:

...and purpose because of the whole forum itself. Would I not want to put a WIP thread here where a lot of people will see it? Do you realize that about %25 percent of your members are moderators?

A forum like this should remain secret, made with boards that are used only for discussing the games you are developing with your friends, and make yourself the solo moderator, because with that few members, you only need one. Think about it, you have 21 members, and TGC has who knows how many. There are only maybe 4 DBP and geek culture mods, if I am right, and you have five for 21 users, counting the mods.

I myself have a forum which does not have more than 5 members, and I'm not going to post it up, but I'll say that the reason why is because it already servers its purpose: as a place where me and my online buddies can share files and work on our large-scale project. Could I have more members? Sure. But I chose not to adevertise it because what purpose would it serve? Sure, I plan on releasing it to the public so that people can have an easy-download location for demos, and can watch the progress, but there will still be hidden boards where code snippets are shared, and for now I remain the only moderator and administrator because there is simply no reason to have more.

5 members is not much? That's absolutely true! But I only have 4 members in my team (one of them left do to a busy schedule), and since the forum is for our discussions, it has the maximum number of users necessary to get the job done. And I find that, with such a small amount of people, our work progress very quickly indeed.

I do not want to discourage you, I know how fun and exciting it is to make a website with users and boards, but you will learn, and probably already have learned that when advertising such forums in such an early stage, new users tend to remain as they are, i.e., they join, make a post, and never come back. But with a working demo, lots of screens, and a serious attitude without all of the "lols", "whining threads", as you put it , etc., people will find your forum to be an interesting and enjoyable place to visit. Think of TDK's forum, it has some problems with user inctivity, but he did not publicly release it for a long time.

Good luck with your forum and I hope you progress well in your games. I still want to see some screens.
