2D All the way! / Dungeon Master style graphics

OK, here\'s a challenge.

Throw as much info at me as possible about how games like this are made, using 2D graphics routines only!

You should really check out the program World Creator for graphics:
http://www.inet2inet.com/InetSoftware/World-Creator/WorldCreator-info.asp

It'll help you create tiles for that Pseudo 3D look.

I've never made, or attempted, a game like that before, so I don't know exactly how you would approach making it in 2D only.

I could suggest the following also. use a 3d/2d hybrid. make your "dungeon" 3d and set the camera view in a frame with the rest of your 2d graphics. then you can use plains with textures for the map itself. Here is how I have been doing it.
