Hi,

I downloaded the final build of Firefox 2.0 last night (from their FTP servers, the site still says 1.5) and it's absolutely gorgeous. I really like the new graphical style (I never skinned Firefox 1.5 because I always quite liked the original theme). It's not overly glossy, but has nice touches everywhere. It's still just as fast rendering, my favourite extensions work, and the tabs work better now.

I'm sure that a lot more has changed under the hood, but on the surface it still rocks.

I also installed IE7 final and that is a really nice update too. It looks a little out of place in XP, but on Vista it really shines - and the tabs overview page is great, as is the much better rendering time and CSS support than before. Overall both excellent upgrades at long last!

I only use a handful of plugins (web dev, pdf download, ie tab and firebug) and they all worked without having to wait for updates, which is cool.

Nicholas - Yes, that's the release.

The search engine remover plugin I was using doesn't work, but oh well. I'm not too sure on the new look(alright it hasn't changed that much but still) but then again I always take time to get used to changes. Tabs are nicer now at least..

Oh and the recently closed tabs submenu could be useful.

In the release notes it says something about the toolbar buttons glowing if you hover the mouse over them - I see not such fearure on mine! Do I need a pixel shader? Lol..

I'm wondering if this is the final build or not. I'll wait and see what they release later on today and get that, because this version is certainly missing the things I most wanted - like the in-line spell checker, live titles and JS 1.7 support. That or they just aren't activated yet.

What a waste of 5.4Mb of bandwidth!

I might be imagining it - but it feels faster...

It's definitely a bit faster, and even if this isn't the final build I still love the improved tabs and interface it does have.

For me...
Quote: "improved tabs"

I've noticed nothing - but thats probably because I'm still using iFox 2.3.4. I looked at the standard one and the theme just looked a little more polished - hardly enough to warrent a major release

Quote: "and interface"

From what I can see, they've moved Theme and Extension menu items into an Addon section.

There are a few things - the recently closed tabs option in History is kinda usefull... Although I'm not 100% sure that there is anything thats really in FF2.0 that couldn't have been contributed by Joe Bloggs!

The release is precious little to do with the interface, and everything to do with the internal changes and enhancements. Having said that, I like the new style tabs, I like the improved icons, the menu layout, the little drop-down tab selector (where close-tab used to be) and the new RSS handler.

When I can get it working I know I'll appreciate the in-line spell checker and session saver the most. The less extensions I have to have loaded for all of that crap, the better.

I never liked iFox much, still don't.

Wow - I didn't notice that button change and the new RSS handler is nice...

Its funny how some people like themes and other people dont. There are so many theme's on the site which look ghastly to me but there must be someone out there who likes them...

Ahh I found the session saver! Hidden away in the options. Very nice indeed. I like the little arrow when you drag tabs now too, and I like the way if you drag a tab onto a textarea (such as this box) it'll insert the URL for you. Quite neat. Being able to have the RSS feeds use Feed Demon by default now is great.

All that leaves is the damned spell checker (which I have turned on, but doesn't appear to do anything).

Can I have a clue?

Quote: "like the way if you drag a tab onto a textarea (such as this box) it'll insert the URL for you"

Does that with all links too - eg drag my banner into the area.

Quote: "All that leaves is the damned spell checker (which I have turned on, but doesn't appear to do anything)."

Same... I get the impression that it needs an extension/dictionary.

Works here. I installed a dictionary and now it neatly underlines spelling mistakes.

How kind of you to tell us how to install a dictionary...

Right click a text area, and click "Add dictionaries...", choose a dictionary from the list(the British English dictionary is on page 2), install it, and restart Firefox. Rather annoyingly it tells me Firefox is spelled incorrectly..

Oh wait, you can add words to the dictionary. Simply right click the word, and click "Add to dictionary".

Another thing I've noticed is that you can highlight text, and search for it with the currently selected search engine by right clicking it and selecting "Search ---- for ----". Could save some time I suppose.

Agreed, its quicker to load up and uses less ram and page file space, even less the IE7 but about the same as my IE shell I made for better performance, just as well. As for the rest of it, well I haven't looked at that yet

2.0 doesn't seem much better than previous versions, unless I'm missing something important about it.

Personally I'm not impressed by any of the browsers currently available. Probably because there's just no real "Compliant" standard.

So you get websites that are STILL ... "Designed for Explorer" or "Designed for Firefox"

When I can finally make a website to the W3C Specifications, without it displaying differently between browsers then I'll personally be happy.

There needs to be something similar to how DirectX works.
Posted compliancy requirements, and then we could develop websites that are say Web 1.0 Compliant and know we won't have to remake them for each damn browser.

The only problem I see with this is that my current theme (Abstract PC) isn't compatible. At least not last time I checked. Though the default theme has gotten an overhaul it seems, so it may not be all that bad to lose the one I'm using.

Spell checker looks useful, too. Better than using other programs to check spelling for me.

Yeah I used to use the spell checker built into the Google Toolbar, but that involved actually clicking the 'check' button and then you couldn't write more until you'd checked it, etc. So much nicer now!

(and ironically 'Google' is considered an incorrect spelling.. heh)

Ahh another nice change I've noticed is that it handles file downloads the way IE used to - that is while the 'Save As' window is open, and you're picking where to dump the file, it's already downloading in the background. IE has done this for ages and I always liked it, glad FF does now too.

I recently installed Download Them All and really like it as a download manager. If you default it to your desktop you can just send a file to it and it starts downloading it straight away. It also does cool things like if you add 30 things to it, it'll automatically queue them so it doesn't try to do 30 things at once.

This spell checker rocks..

Personally I prefer Mozilla working under the hood to improve each version, as opposed to just giving it a glitzy looking skin to make it look different.

IE7 is precisely the opposite. It looks nice and steals a whole barrel of features from FF. Under the hood its practically the same - and I much prefer the former personally

I thought it always did this? I have found almost every time I start to download a big file, it's already partway through after selecting where to save it to on the hard drive.

A lot of the stuff takes a bit of tinkering to find. For instance, I received an email purporting to be a bank. I knew it was phising, but I just wanted to see how well done it was (some are very convincing).

FF unfortunately decided to ruin my fun, and came up with a big warning window saying "This site is a fraud".

I really like that feature

Does anyone know of a way to remove the close buttons that appear on every individual tab? I find it much more convenient to just press the middle-mouse button on the tab, and having that close button just reduces clickable space.

I haven't tried FF in ages, but you guys convinced me to try 2.0. It is a lot better than the last version I used It works with most of the sites I visit now. Too bad the pages load a lot slower than in IE on my machine 0_o Once it loads it seems to be fine though. The size and speed of installation and upgrading is an awesome plus over IE as well. I'll do a lot more testing later, but may still stick with IE as it works with all of the pages I visit.
