It seems like the top image editors are Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. When it comes to creating a sprite, which is a pixel art form, are there any software out there that just dominate in the pixel art catergory?

Yes, ProMotion is the de facto pixel pushing package on the PC.

Not biased at all there are you Richard? Lol! Don't forget good old paint! I'm not sure having not used it much but the Gimp is suppposed to be very good but that may again be images rather than sprites. Of course you can also render 3D objects in something like Truespace.

If you down load the gamespace demo, you can make some excellent models and export the bmp's. You can then make sprites out of these. It is much easier to model in 3d, than in 2d and have it look good.

Gimp is terrible for pixel sprite work, and so is Photoshop. ProMotion is the only package similar to the classic uber Deluxe Paint, and I used it for years before TGC re-sold it, so no, no bias. It's simply the best pixel package out there.

Why is photoshop terrible? I always use it to create some pixel art. Do you know about the 'pencil tool'? thats just great for pixeling. And you can also use a grid..

yeah i beg to differ with the tools available in photoshop if you know what your doing its very powerful. I would use either droplets or batch actions in most parts.

Photoshop is the most powerful art package around, I don't doubt that for a second and use it for hours, every single day, so am well aware of what you can do with it.

But for fiddly pixel art work and especially sprite animation, it is not the best, not by a long shot.
