FPSC Content Installer Application

Overview
FPSC Content Installer Application is designed to compress (and encrypt) your files. The best part is - it is ideal for anything containing any content from FPSC - ex: the Bannana gun that was restricted because it had FPSC meshes and textures. This will validate FPSC and then install the content for you, so that it is sure that you actually own FPSC.

Using the Program
Eventually a special version will be made to pack up all the content you want in it and setup up ready to go. At the moment, I have a command line only version for testing I'm posting here. It contains my Floor Pack. You can either enter in the directory manually when prompted or enter 'def' which will use 'C:\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator\'. It will tell you as it validates files, and then extract the files.

Please tell me what you think! I'm considering bundling this with Decal Maker when the final GUI version is made.

Please post a screenshot.
And are you going to give anybody the password for the carpet that came with the download?
This is a very cool WIP app and will help forum members protect their media.
Yet another good idea,Airslide.

It's a good idea, especially if you make
it with an idiot-proof interface.

Uh, you want a screenshot of some text? Well if you insist...

Quote: "And are you going to give anybody the password for the carpet that came with the download?"

Um...did you try the installer? It unzips it to FPSC for you (for if you had the password it wouldn't be very protective, would it?)

EDIT: Oops, I forgot the desired screen of text...

EDIT 2: In case I didn't make it clear, the WHOLE idea is to make it so you can have FPSC only content, so you can include something from FPSC in it (ex: the bannana gun that was removed from the forums)

While I downloaded the installer and looked at it for a second I did not actually run it...yet.I will in a few.
Thanks for posting the screenie.

Edit:
Ran it and installed the media.
It works great...as was stated earlier it might need to be more user friendly.
Since most people have FPS Creator installed to the default location it might be easier if you gave the user the option to install to the default location (and, hence, check there for the required information automatically) or browse for the directory.
I know this is a very early WIP and I can't wait until this is finished.
It will come in handy.

*Cough*

Eventually it will read the FPSC directory from the registry, and if it can't find it it will give you a browse-to-folder window. It will also have a nice Windows style interface like Decal Maker has

I'm adding registry support now, the commandline version will use the command 'reg' for it, and in the final version it will do it automaticly and ask you if it is correct.

Cool!
I figured you would do that.
I can't wait to see the finished product.

Okay, just finished the registry access, finds the directory using the registry perfectly. Currently the command line version uses the command 'reg'. The interface will be simple - I'm still adding more features though. It can determine what version of FPSC you have, and you can even set it up to require a certain version or higher. EX: If it is a dynamic object with mutliple textures you can set the minimum version to 103. I'm also thinking about giving it the ability to scan for offical model packs, so you could have a modified SAS mesh or something and you require Model Pack 1 in order to install it.

Okay, this might seem a bit fast, but finished the GUI. I might tweak a few things - but for now test it out, it is WAY more user friendly

EDIT: Also, I think I can speed up the scan process, it is doing a little more than it needs to - just random stuff that doesn't actually seem to help.

EDIT 2: By the way, even Decal Maker started as a command line app

Very nice! You should make the scannerrun one of those fake hard drive destroying apps for those who have an illegal copy of FPSC. Imagine someones reaction to that! funny stuff!

Nice idea, I was thinking of doing a zip file that is password and scan the system and if fpsc was there it would unzip the file and install it.

That's basicly what it is candle!

@RF = At the moment, I'm not excatly sure how to detect a pritated version - unless I could see the diffrence side by side, there really isn't a way.

Well, that's true...kinda like the message at the end of the old Wolf 3d that says something like 'You know, how hard drives can get, erased and all...'

Looking good so far, and a great idea. Just to be politically correct, you may want to change the wording:

Your copy of FPSC will be scanned to make sure you own FPSC.

to something like:

The installer will now verify your copy of FPSC.

Just a thought. Microsoft considers everyone to be pirates until proven otherwise, and it rubs me the wrong way.

Best.

Ah, that sounds better - will do now

EDIT: Okay, I fixed that and re-worded alot of other things too. The installer itself seems to be mostly finished, the install 'maker' will be a little more time probally.

You know how it is around here.
More people are interested they just don't post.
And the people that do,for better or for worse, are generally the same people that post in most other threads.
This will be quite useful to me.

Yeah, just think about this. If we could get all the regular people who normally contribute content to use this installer (which will only install on a verified copy of FPSC) then I'll bet we could lose a lot of hackers here just looking for more free stuff.

Ahhhh, well I can dream, can't I?

EDIT: If I select browse and then cancel, I get a "Runtime Error 8003 - Could not find path at line 57"

Fixed the problem xplosys was having.

Also, Errant is getting an early copy w/customized interface, its part of a trade. So you'll likely see him using it

Added EULA function:

The program itself is almost done, next I just have to make the 'configure' utility that allows you to store the content and set it up for use by the program.

This sounds very interesting, if I'm interpreting it correctly.

Is this the kind of situation you had in mind...

I modified one of the SF health packs to represent a used/opened variation, with a simple interior - designed to be scattered around in the aftermath of a battle. Might be useful to others, but the texture map is 50% FPSC stock, so at the moment it's for me only.

I've got quite a few other bits a pieces like this - opened lockers, blast-damaged doors etc - all using modified FPSC meshes and/or textures. Would your program would make distribution of these feasible?

Cheers

- Graham

Yes, that's the whole point. So you can modify FPSC things and distribute them to other FPSC users

Good job! Looks like it may come in handy. I saw Airslide's screenshot. You may want to add a back and maybe a cancel button. By the way, are you using Visual Basic or DBP? Just curious.

There are 3 kinds of people: Ones who can count, and ones who can't.

Did you know five out of four people have trouble with fractions?

he uses darkbasic pro, i think.

This will be really useful as we will be able to post half edited textures (eg. just changing heads).

Thanks airslide and good work

Yes, DBPro. I'll eventually get to work on the install maker that you use to actually pack the stuff, I'm just delaying because of the DBP Nvidia Comp. Which isn't going so well for me, unfourtunetly....

Well, it just looks like my DBP game isn't going to be finished in time. I'm still trying, and if I can't I'll still continue it on...who knows, maybe if they let in previously made games in the next comp I can polish this up and compete in that one.
