Silvers- Man, it's getting better. You need to start working on level flow. This consists of selecting content that flows with the level concept...'erm...you do have a level concept right?...
I recommend creating four rooms, attached by one hallway. create a scene that you have seen in a movie. then try to capture the origional lighting as best as you possibly can. This will provide a great way to learn level construction. remember to leave things open ended so you can tweak it later to achieve best performance.

I am finding that it doesn't matter how long the hallway is, it's all dependant on whats built around it. Meaning if you are one a single plain and you have a large hallway with rooms kicking off to each side you're probably not going to get alot of lag if any. But if you have a moderately long hallway and have a two level staircase devided by a landing and you have built a series of rooms on the same or lower plain and the character has to face that direction during game play your computer is going to start to drool and will shortly try to bite it's ear.
