Another fantasy creature, this time one of the well known ones.
Spent a lot of time modeling the base mesh for this one,I wanted it to deform as best I could get it. Still have some final modeling to do and finish the texture.

OMG That is awesome. You should have just made a fantasy creature pack. You would have made some good money. There is no way that you're giving that one out. That would be TOO nice. Your animating is great. Although I could never get your pitcrawler to shoot the flames, I still got it to run, attack and what not. And that thing is so sick. And now you make this. Oh man. Just curious, wait never mind I forgot what I was going to ask. I'll edit this when I remember.

Keep it up!!!

Jenkins the pitcrawler probably isn't shooting at you because your not far enough away,or maybe you didn't download the amended zip I posted, the animation calls were needing tweaked.

I don't know what I did really I was just so excited. But I don't want this thread to be about your pitcrawler. SO back onto the dragon, it is AWESOME.

Oh and I was plenty far away from the pitcrawler. I don't think I put the things in the right folder is all.

OMG OMG OMG

Loved your pit crawler, and i'm loving this!

you should make a pack of like 10 or so monsters and nastys; you'd certainly have my $20.

Brilliant! will it use the same system as the pitcrawler and shoot fireballs at a distance and swoop to attack when you wander to close to it, or it to you? If you want something really cool (if it's possible that is), see if you can call a fire decal into existace at the point of the fireball's impact! (if you want to pull this off you need new fire decal, not the standard 2D stuff)

Just a suggestion, but that would require people to pay money. In the end you still get teriffic and monsterous edition to your games! *applaudes* (sp?)

Really nice work Rolfy.

*Note to others: Thats a WIP. Notice how it has some movement and is Mapped and textured. Though not in FPSC, he presents it in a much more finished state then mat grey blocks.

hats off to you rolfy!!! Simply outstanding

'flying' may cause a little problem for you though. Skull fpe may help...but then it goes through walls I guess. But am sure you will work something out.

Once again, fantastic stuff!!

to sort out the flying problem you could just add a non-animated tiny invisble box at the bottom to the same mesh. So that in essence; even though it looks like its flying, it is actually walking along the ground.

Many thanks for the encouragement everyone.
Filya,I think this flying deal can be worked out.I was inspired by Butter Fingers drop ship to do this.

Tyrano man, you are on the right track,I already have a ground object set up.

Evil star, I had some problems with using a decal as weapon flak with the pitcrawler, maybe I could look at trying to do this again.

Rolfy, if it's for your own game(only) I can turn ya on to a script that changes the altitude of the mesh wile its flying. In no way would I want this put in your download for the masses, but for you, S4 and I would give you the script we use for the SJ23, and S4 would help you with any tweaks you may need as far as speed of the motions and variance.

(if your making a pack, you couldn't use it, but if its for you that's another thing)

Great animation, with nice ancillary movement! Did you use any max controllers for this or was this all hand-keyed? And did you use bones or a biped?

@Bond1,it's animated using Cat,the default bone rigs already have a dragon, with a little flying animation,I built the mesh around this so it would fit without having to adjust the rig too much.Character tools is pretty handy because it comes with a good interface, for using layers and morphs. It would be better if you did use controllers for this kind of animation though, at this stage I just wanted to see how the mesh would deform.

CAT, wow, you're getting all fancy and high-falutin'.

I don't have that plugin myself, but I've heard its pretty awesome for animating. Didn't softimage just purchase the rights to CAT?

Thanks for the info though, I appreciate you sharing your tips.

EDIT: OUCH!! CAT is $995. That's a little steep for an animation plugin. Is it THAT much better than max's default animation tools?

Bond1,I dont know how this boned rig would transfer to FPSC.
I did try to bring in a figure which had additional bones attached to the biped,it was a fat character and I was using bones to roll and wobble the body when he moved,it worked really well in Max but didn't seem to export the additional bones, any ideas?

Quote: "Is it THAT much better than max's default"

It's just ease of use,if you want to use the mixer or layers or attach controllers to your rigs without it you'll still get good results.

You're using the Panda exporter, right?

The Panda exporter only supports the combination of biped/physique, or skin/bones. So you can't mix and match the two, and cannot attach additional bones to the biped and export it.

There IS a workaround: export your biped and additional bones rig to the fbx format, then reimport into 3ds max. This will convert everything into standard max bones, leaving the animation intact. You'll then need to rig this using the skin modifier (not physique), and it will export fine with Panda.

Rolfy, I'm going to pass this on to S4. He asked me about doing this but I said "Let me make the post where I tell the majority of the membership they're not getting it" His responce was "Good cop bad cop huh?" and I said yes....he's the guy that has all the knowledge of the script and how to manipulate it. It's late in England at the moment so expect an email tomarrow.

Rolfy, If I may? What version of Cat are you using. After seeing the animations of your last 2 creatures, this really has me interested. I've joined the site and downloaded all the vids and it looks amazing, This is version 2.0 I guess. Is there any promotional material your aware of that shows even more of what this is capable of, other then the 10 or so public vids on the site? It's house tax and house insurance time being the begining of the year, but I can certainly see this as one of the must have major purchases of the year especialy with me wanting to redo all my character animations, and being better equipt in my hobby( my friends cringe when I say I got this or that, when they're all buying Harleys and hotubs...lol).

Sometimes I get caught up on whatever I'm currantly working on and miss getting to know some of the latest and greatest software so thanks for eluding to how you did these, and bringing the software to my attention.

@Bond1
Theres a video called "Creating Rigs" you may want to view. It shows the ease of the guy making a skeleton rig, which to me , would fit your Faun/Pan/whatever to a tee. Certainly something to look at if you havent.

I looked at the video, and I agree it looks like a very cool tool! The preset creature rigs would open up a lot of possibilities, but at almost $1000 its out of the question right now, that's almost a third of the price of max itself! If anything, my next purchase will be mudbox.

For my faun, I can simply rotate the knees around of a standard biped, to give that dog-legged effect.

For the money CAT is not really worth it,its main use is to create a pipeline for getting a lot of motion capture into Max, although it is easy to create animated motion using this software its still relatively easy to do this in Max without it.The standard biped in Max can be manipulated in many different ways to accomodate even quadrapedal characters and with the ability to attach extra bones for limbs, wings etc.Use the motion mixer or motion flow mode.
Cat doesn't add much to the equation but as it already has a range of rigs for creatures of all sorts it can be useful,I would suggest getting in about the controllers, wiring and layers that Max already provides.

Bond1,I was thinking myself of purchasing Mudbox, but its just been released and I haven't seen a demo download available for this yet, this has put me off a little as I'm not going to buy unless I can try it first.

Save up for a Harley Locrian, you'll get better motion

Thanks for that info rolfy. I'm really impressed with Character Studio for what it is, even though it isn't in vogue right now it seems. The ability to handle layers and the motion mixer has been around for years, way before most software got the ability. Layers makes it SO easy to modify animations for variation, and also just to adjust certain poses for fat and skinny characters.

And the ability to reverse the knees has been around for a long time too, I think the mighty Motion Builder just got this functionality a few versions ago.

This one was really difficult to get into FPSC,but it got there eventually.A seam has appeared down the centre of the model that wasn't there before I brought it in,but I guess I'll just have to go back and fix this.Still to finish the texture as well.
Thanks to Tyrano man for the staff, great fun.But he's really hard to hit,I will give him some sort of weapon, in the meantime he's just working in the same way as Pitcrawler, get close and he goes for you.

no probs for the staffs, i'm making another 10 fantasy weapons, cos there is so much fantasy media coming out, we'll need something to kill it with

Great vid dude! (it deserved two smilys oh wait and a thrid).

Hope you fix the seam.

EDIT: i just realised. Your fighting a dragon, so you use the 2 least powerful staffs? lol i would never walk up to a dragon with them.
