I felt very moved during the latest Zelda with the scene with Ilia in Kakariko village (when you're the wolf and she says 'Link will save us') and later in Telma's bar with Ilia. The music almost bought a tear to my eye.

Might & Magic: Dark Messiah

I honestly felt sympathetic for the dark side and felt the need to support my father when the whole church scene came up. I wont ruin it for anyone, but if you havent played it, play it. Awsome game.

Games which have moved me, hmm...

The five Myst games, HL2, Fable, Black & White.

I put this in a snippet because it's long...

Oh yes! I remember When I was pretty young I had a tamagotchi pet, and I cried every time it ran away (only game that has made me cry).

In other media, the most moving movie I've seen is V for Vendetta, the most moving book The Dark Tower (book 7 of the dark tower series).

I should probably look at getting the longest journey. From what people have said I bet I'd really like it.

Yep, make sure you get both. I got Dreamfall first and regretted it afterwards; not be cause it wasn't incredibly good on its own but because it would have been even better if I had played TLJ first. And if you are talking about books then I would have to say the Philip Pullman trilogy (his dark materials; Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife + The Amber Spyglass) were all incredibly good both as stories and for emotional attachment.

His Dark materials is amazing- The dark tower series is on a very similar subject. The coolest thing about the dark tower books though is that all of Steven kings other books are part of the same multiverse. The end of the dark tower series made me read it all over again right afterwords, and it's really amazing everything you pick up when you're re-reading it.

I just purchased Dreamfall... It's very likely I'll regret getting it first, but it was hard not to... I downloaded the demo to try it out, and it was like playing a book... an amazing book. When I got to the point where it told me I had to buy it to continue... well, I decided it was worth it for such an interesting story. It's at least as good as most scifi books so far... definitely one of the best stories for any game I've ever played, if not the best.

The only thing is the load times and possibly the combat. I may have had problems because I had to install it on an external drive (the installer exe took up so much room I couldn't install it on the same drive while it was open), but I spent more time waiting for the load times to complete than actually playing the demo... I'm currently waiting the hour it will take to copy the entire game onto my actual comp, in hope that it will speed it up a bit... I've only been through the combat tutorial so far, but it was a real chore. I don't know... I guess it just felt out of place, like a last minute feature.

Actually, I don't think I'll regret it that much. I beat the Myst games in this order: 5, 4, 3, 1, 2, and I doubt it changed much but a few of the decisions I made. I don't think I enjoyed any of them less because of it.

Hmm...the load times weren't that bad at all for me and that was running of my external USB hard drive. The combat certainly annoyed me to start with but I got used to it by the end and actually quite enjoyed it! Is the demo the start of the game or has it ruined the story for yuou part way in?

Yeh, the load time problem went away when I copied it over to the comp. The external drive was on my sever...

I actually finished the game ten minutes ago (at the end of the demo, when you purchase it you immediately get access to the rest of the game, without the game even closing). The combat never got any more fun for me, and it kind of ruined the fights when you play as, erm,

I don't recommend it, but I played from when I posted last night until now. It was worth it though... I'll need to get the first game before the third one comes out...

Definitely the most emotional game I've ever played. I didn't cry at the end, but I was right on the verge. If the animations had been better, I think I would have (only part of the game that didn't impress me graphically, well that and some of the really low res textures).

Edit: Definitely an inspirational game. This is more an interactive novel than a game really I think, and it was amazing. Once I'm a skilled enough 3d artist, writer, and programmer, I really think I should try and make something similar...

Edit2: Just ordered The Longest Journey. It seems like it's worth it. I looked at a few screens and vids, and I have trouble believing it was made in 1999

I agree about some of the animation being off. I'm glad you enjoyed it as well and I share your thinking of what you said in the edit. I really hope that:
a) They make a 3rd
b) It lives up to the same standards or better
c) My PC can run it!

I've played the sequel and absolutely loved it, so now I'm playing through this as well. Some of the puzzles seem a bit more archaic, and sometimes involve randomly trying to combine objects. I prefer puzzles to be more logical and to make sense, but to each his own

omg!!!!! I just discovered that Dreamfall has an "ultra" setting for the graphics, and I can run it at full speed if I set up my config correctly!!! The game looks a hundred times better now... I'll probably end up re-playing it once I finish the longest journey.
I desperately need another game with as good a story. The interactive novel thing is insanely addictive. I would absolutely love to have an entire library of these types of games.

Quote: "They make a 3rd "

After that ending they had better be making a third right now! I'm itching to figure out more- so much was revealed at the end, but so much was left unanswered and unfinished. And I hope the next game is even longer. I finished Dreamfall in 17 strait hours about. I'd hope the next one is about 25-40 hours, just because I could spend longer just- being there. And I hope they either get rid of the combat or seriously improve it to something more graceful and fluid. I'd much rather the battle scenes have been easier and flowed more like a dance than two tigers circling each other in a pit.

I've never came to tears at video game. I don't recall crying for much of anything movie/game related. The only thing I've ever outright cried after was after reading Heinlein's "Time enough for love", when Lazarus Long's wife died at the end of the chapter where he goes pioneering on a relatively unsettled planet.

Guys, the Dreamfall games are all part of a *trilogy*, so I'd bet good money on the 3rd coming out soon(ish!)

I bought the 2nd one for my wife for her birthday, it looked great, and she loves adventure games.

@Bizar Guy - Again, I completely agree with everything you just said!

@Richard Davey - I figured that would be the case but I also know that the 2nd was pretty costly to develop and the 3rd will only be made based on sales of the 2nd. So everyone buy 3 copies per week! I also love adventure games but there are so few decent ones around. The 5 days a stranger, 7 days a sceptic, Trilby's Notes set is absolutely awesome, free and still being added to. You all seriously have to check it out.http://www.fullyramblomatic.com

I sounds like I'll have to get Dreamfall very soon, I also love interactive novels/movies. I've tried the PC demo, but I know I can get it for Xbox as well, and I really prefer gaming on my 360 :p

You should try out Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. It's a short, pretty easy game, but as it was the first interactive movie I watched/played () I was really surprised as to how cool it actually is. The whole thing about being able to change the story depending on the decisions you make is actually really nice as well. Download the demo, check it out.

The fact that Dreamfall is backwards compatible with 360 was the icing on the top for me. I preferred to play it on my TV with a single disc than installing the 5 or so discs required for the PC version

The only game that effected me was....er....in Halo 2 the first time playing. I was a bit angry because I didnt know that I would reappear. But, no no no no no game should make you cry unless you finsihed writing a masterpiece and you hard drive burst into flames.

Medieval Coder, Why shouldn't a game make you emotional if other works of art can?

I haven't played any of those two games so i don't know how good their story is, but if you have nothing against games made in 1996 then Albion comes to mind there. It is and always has been my #1 Adventure game favourite.

It has everything, incredibly detailed world, insane (yet awesome)plot twists and scifi-mixed with oldschool viking-like tech (not mixed like in merged, but seperate through the game). Also it has pretty complex puzzles, most complex i've ever seen in a game atleast.....

The Zelda games are good at moving people emotionally. Wind Waker's cutscene where Aryll got kidnapped looked so sad... I just finished Twilight Princess, so if you haven't finished it you've been warned; spoilers await so don't click the code button.

I know it's a trillogy. I hilighted now because I don't want to have to wait so long for the next one. I can easily wait 3 years if that's what it takes, but I really don't want to wait 6.

I'll take a look at indigo prophesy, as well as Albion. I have nothing against 1996 games, unless my eyes end up hurting after playing them.

Edit: Wait!!! Isn't Albion the name of the world in Fable???

Exactly. When I first played Beyond Good and Evil, I didn't cry, but it did move me, and brought tears to my eyes. It was because of the relationship between Jade and her uncle, and then what happens to him. Playing a game shouldn't make you cry, but the dialog and cut-scenes are just like scenes from a real movie, which, also, can make you cry.

In my opinion, people aren't emotional enough when playing certain games! Like MMORPGs. The purpose of those is to become your character, to create conversations based on their personalities. A lot of players out there still chat in internet slang in MMORPGs, which ruins the fun.

It's also the name of the planet you crashland on in "Albion". Doubt it's the same though.

It's a rather long game, i garuantee you'll spend some time completing it if you ever try it out. Actually i have the box infront of me now, it's marked with a red circle sticker on the side, meaning "difficult". Aaahh i miss those circles.

You'll start on the smallest island first. Best to stay there for a while and train your characters or you'll be met with some impossible battles later.....just a little advice.

I finished The Longest Jouney... I'm never going to look at games the same way... The longest Journey and Dreamfall are the closest thing to game art or novel that I've ever seen.

Now I can make all sorts of assumptions as to what the third game will be.

I am now looking into making a type of point and click adventure... I've already got a massive gamestory planned out to be a sudo platformer-adventure game, and I have some interesting ideas about the platforming part now...

I've been considering making an adventure game too. I think I'll make an engine and then make an 'adventure game maker' so that I can concentrate fully on the story and graphics/atmosphere.

Woah, good luck with that! I mean, if you can make an engine which can completely deal with the massive variety an adventure game can produce, then I salute you.

I mean, I'm going to make the engine before I really figure out what the puzzles and exact layouts are, but to make something that could handle all the possible scenarios would be really amazing.

I'm a reasonable 2D artist, but churning out background after background really digs into your enthusiasm.

It does encourage you into better, tight, world and puzzle design. There's an AGS game set on a Space ship... something II, where you have to stop your pet being sick or something.

Anyway that was seriously awesome, and only about 5 screens.

Well, I don't think the art (2d or 3d) will be a problem for me as much as making the story play out over a long enough period of time and with puzzles that don't feel forced. If it helps, I'm thinking of something split into 19 chapters, over about 8 different worlds or so... A bit of a challenge, to say the least. Meh, half of the worlds wouldn't feature more than one location anyways.

It seems to me once you get past the basics of the engine it would be pretty fun. Now that I think about it, I don't suppose there would be a ton of code that would need to be specific, but I think an adventure game maker would be a push, at least for me.

Well if I do make one I won't be keeping it to myself. That is definately something I would release to the community because I love having adventure games to play so giving that out would increase the number avaiable!

POSTAL 2

Nothing warms my heart more than kicking a dog in the balls and having it go on a wild rampage, biting people. Then watching the victims pull out guns trying to shoot the dog, and accidently shooting other people. Those people pull out guns and well, a nice riot ensues.

Beating girls in school uniforms over the head with a spade always proves to be a tear jerker.

I love the smell of vomit in the gutter.

And here's a penguin...
