Lucky for me, my ex step-dad was British, and I was around him so much I started talking in the accent, as well as using some of the expressions as well. But, I suppose you could just look up British TV shows, there has to be loads on the Internet, and what better way to learn how to act british then from british actors.

Watch some Monty Python, especially Holy Grail, you'll find pretty much every English accent in a Monty film.

Just talk like Jeremy Irons. We all talk like that all the time. Even the queen.

Or watch that Austin Powers movie with the fat b**tard character. That is a British accent. Not English mind, but you were not specific.

Aint no such thing as a British accent!

Liverpudlians speak different to Boltoners who in turn speak different to Mancunians and theres only like 30 miles travel between each of them!

Don't get me started on the Welsh who are thirty more miles from Liverpool they speak some kind of language left to earth by aliens.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCCnBFu1K_0 <- a visitor trying to say the name of a welsh train station

Seriuosly though if you want to talk like a posh London idiot (who seem to represent and English accent to world) try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md5M-6hRloE and referer to ones self as one like what the Queen does

What you talking about Willis? I mean GatorHex.... Where most of my family come from (south Wales) they have a wonderful accent (if you can understand it). On the other hand where I grew up after 9 years old (north Wales, on Anglesey infact, because my Dad liked it when he joined the RAF and got posted there) they talk like a cross between some inbred moron (which is probably really easily explainable...) and Ratboy. Apparently it is the influx of Liverpooleans who are right round the corner. Like. Innit. Like. T***ers....

I love a gentle welsh accent - it's primed for telling jokes.

If you want a surefire way of annoying a resident of the United Kingdom, just say something like "I want to speak like a British person". You're encompassing 4 very proud, but separate countries. Not withstanding ignoring the vast differing accents...

If you've got real player, try this site:

As has already been said, there is no such thing as a single British accent. There are many and you can usually pinpoint someones geographical location to within a few miles just by their accent.

However, Listening to Dazzag speak might get you a reasonably neutral accent. I am guessing of course, because I have never heard him speak. Putting 2 and 2 together though, I have deduced that he is a scaleybrat* and will therefore have a scaleybrat* accent which is a mixture of pretty much every accent there is.

*Scaleybrat - The son or daughter of a serving member of the British Armed Forces. I don't know the origin of the word but that is what it means. Because members of the forces come from all over the British isles, their offspring gather together in one school and their accents mix, thus giving an accent that can't be placed but is most definately British.

Go on Dazzag ... record your voice and let us all have a listen

[Edit] Perhaps I should point out that most Brits won't have heard of a Scaleybrat. I am pretty sure it is a military slang word.

Yes. I basically sound pretty neutral. Considering I was born in Cambridge (Ely), moved to Italy for a few years, lived in Gloucester and Oxford (Carterton - sp?), before eventually making my way up to Anglesey (north Wales). Then mid Wales for Uni, before ending up right next to Ascot for the last decade or so. Now in Cyprus so I assume will have a more gruff sound within the next 10 years or so Heh, men out here sound as grumpy as hell.

No-one can pin-point my accent as the majority of my childhood in one place was Anglesey and I made a mental note to not sound like those t***ers (Natural Born Killers line of "no, those other t***ers" if anyone comes from there.... you probably know my sister if you do...). Interestingly one bloke was dead certain I came from somewhere near Bath once. Pretty sure I've only ever driven through the place once or twice ever.

Even though I consider myself to be a neutral voice, and I must say a good singer, I had a go at Singstar a few months ago. Did a duet with a friend basically. Was that one with Elton John and that bird in dungarees. I did quite well until it played back. Basically I sounded a little like a strangled chicken. So I'm thinking perhaps not that amazing "TV news voice" like I thought I had. Come to think of it when I recorded some voices for Daiblazer a few years ago (3...2...1... etc) I had to muck around a bit to make it sound only slightly daft. Infact when I was in BTEC (college instead of A-levels) I had the whole class in stiches a couple of times just reading out essays. Honest to God. The teacher even had tears in her eyes. Slightly worrying...

Record my voice? Hmmm. We will see.

Yeah, I can't even do impressions of my own nationality, I'm bloody hopeless aren't I? Best thing to do is grab clips and immitate them, try to find written pieces that are phonetically written in English. Of course there are many kinds of british accent. Are you looking for a london cockney accent, or an upper class london accent, or something more rural like Somerset, or more annoying and dull like Birmingham (see Ozzy Osbourne for that one) Let us know what sort of character this guy is, his background, his class and perhaps some of his lines, perhaps we might know of a place with the right accent to imitate. (Don't do what the BBC robin hood series has done and place someone with an urban accent in medieval england)

Yeah, see they would probably think you were trying to be Ewan McGregor (before he tried bland voice in Star Wars) or someone. Have only seen clips of the new Robin Hood, but c'mon, does it look like Chav Hood or what? Much like the new Bond. Except he may get away with it.

I love that one with Mr Smokesalot, who is completely oblivious to the fact that he has a ridiculous name, as if he has never realised before.

- "Hello I'm Mr Smokesalot"
- "Well you'd better cut down then!"
- "I'm sorry?"
- "I said - well you'd better cut down then"
- *puzzled look*
- "Smokesalot..."
- *puzzled pause*... "Oh! Smokes-a-lot... yes I see".

And also the Summarise Proust Contest.

Favourite Monty: sketch:

"Your missus into photography?"
"I bet she is. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, a nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat."
"Know what I mean? Know what I mean? Say no more, say no more."

I'm sure Paul Whithouse got inspiration for his "Suits you sir" charactors from this creation.

The Fast Show borrowed an enormous amount from the Monties, who were inspired by the late, great Spike Milligan.

I'm not sure what part of the Monty Python series I like best, but I love all of Holy Grail. The Meaning of Life's start was amazing though, the big fat dude in the restaurant...

No. F*** off. I'm full.
MAÃŽTRE D:
Oh, sir. Hmm?
MR. CREOSOTE:

MAÃŽTRE D:
It's only wafer thin.
MR. CREOSOTE:
Look. I couldn't eat another thing. I'm absolutely stuffed. Bugger off.
MAÃŽTRE D:
Oh, sir, just-- just one.
MR. CREOSOTE:
[groaning] All right. Just one.
MAÃŽTRE D:
Just the one, monsieur. Voilà.

Never liked the Monty Python stuff - very hit and miss. It can be very funny, but most of the time it's just absurd. The Argument is one of the most clever sketches I've ever seen....

Quote: "
I came here for a good argument.
No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.
An argument isn't just contradiction.
It can be.
No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
No it isn't.
"

Anyway, I remember going to university and being quite pleased with myself that no-one could tell where I was from. The best I got was "Northern" but that's because I have hard vowels. (or is it soft? I forget)

Funny how it all goes Monty Python. I love the Black knight part of Holy Grail, perhaps the greatest Monty Python movie, I say movie, because 'And Now for Something Completely different' wouldn't count, I mean who can argue with names like BJ Smegma for an old lady in the first sketch with the spy training video, extremely amusing, too bad we brits don't give out comedy like that anymore, as we have stuff like Little Britain and sketch shows like that one that I find funny for 2 or 3 episodes. I do suppose our stand up comedians have a lot to say for us thought, I mean who can argue with Eddie Izzard or Bill Bailey? Which reminds me, as Eddie Izzard was saying, British actors always play the bad guys in American movies (Then does Darth Vader's men in a room impression), so that's where you should start looking Eureka.

And of course British movies are a good place to look for British accents, or anywhere with British accents, even Call of Duty 2 "die ya jerry w******s".

Also, I'm sure you get British TV in America, that's another good source, there is plenty out there for you, it shouldn't be too hard to find. There was recently a thread on here about that 'mind controlling parasite' where one of the videos posted had the commentary of David Attenborough, he's british, and if you're character is an old upper class speaking guy with a pipe, then he may be perfect.

Here are some youtube videos that may help you.

Eddie Izzard (It might be amusing is you took his accent)

And you got Bill Bailey.

It's interesting, I love Bill Bailey on Black Books (some of the faces he does are priceless - "He had a little man in his hair" LOL) but I once saw some of his stand up act and it didn't do it for me.

I haven't seen too much of Eddie Izzard, but the little I did see I thoroughly enjoyed "Mais regarde, le sange est sûr la chaise...".

Really? I love his Part Troll, Bewilderness and Cosmic Jam shows, the one I posted in the link though, I just watched that, didn't make me laugh much, but the guy wanted a British accent and not the funniest British comedy show So I do suppose he has his off points, although he is always funny in game shows like QI and Nevermind the Buzzcocks.

Speaking of QI, Stephen Fry has a pretty neat accent. He does the narration for the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy for those in the dark of QI.

I own the Monty Python and Fawlty Towers complete DVD collections, and find Fawlty Towers has much better writing. In fact, my wife and I can watch Fawlty Towers over and over again over the years, but we still haven't sat down together to watch the entire Monty Python set.

Fawlty Towers is great but a much "safer" sitcom. Things have a beginning and an end, always make sense and are consistently funny.

Monty Python is a lot more chaotic and, although I am a HUGE fan, a lot more hit and miss. Parts of it are absolute genious, but an equal amount (more so in the later series) is fairly bewildering - even I cannot find Gilliam's interludes anything more than obnoxious. I find it's a lot more of an acquired taste and _certainly_ a lot less "girl friendly". My wife also likes Fawlty Towers but seriously dislikes MP - I thing guys in general have a lot more affinity with nonsense humour that females do. A bit like reading maps, really

Don't forget the twinings tea advert Now which episode of QI did they mock him for doing it?

I think Faulty Towers is great, I think he is an great comical actor, but shame Faulty Towers had too little amount of episodes. As someone said to me yesterday, UK is loosing their good sitcoms and I agree with them, because we don't get stuff that's as funny as monty python or Fawlty Towers anymore, but shows that repeat the same joke over and over in different scenes, I get it! He wants that thing he doesn't want! Hence I don't watch them anymore.

When I was taking acting classes in college I had to do a British accent too. When the play was over the teacher told me it was the best Cockney accent he'd ever heard. I told him I just watch Marry Poppins like crazy. He didn't like me after that because he felt that TV actors were beneath him. Tis not true theater... how dare I mimic them!

If you want to hear BAD British accents... listen to this sound clip me and a cousin made a few years ago... It's worth it if you have no life.

I apologize for the size, but it's kinda long... LOL. First one to listen all the way through gets a !

Anyone who likes that style of British humour needs the Mighty Boosh, the live DVD is pretty good too, compared to Little Britain it's a completely different sport. Little Britain is more about putting Matt and David in expensive makeup, whereas the Boosh would just smother their face in cream and play the moon .

Yep, Boosh was tops. Preferred Monkey Dust and Jaaaammmm myself though. Oh, and of course the most profound horror from the 80's; Darkplace (see avatar). Oh yes. It literally changes your life. Especially if you come from Romford.

Cheers

I think the most up to date comedy that best reflects UK culture is the Spaced team...

From the TV series, another boring day in the shared flat somehow turns into a remake of the Matrix..

They went on to make the best zombie movie ever called Shaun of the Dead

I wonder if there will be a Shaun of the Dead 2?

Yeah, love Spaced too, and Shaun of the Dead, pretty sure we'll see more of that style of movie, at least they didn't get all hollywood like Ricky Gervais .
