b]We got mentioned in the newsletter! [/b]

UPDATE: 1-8-2011

This is the last year we'll be known as NaGaCreMo. NaGaCreMo is being re-branded as InGaCreMo (Internationl Game Creation Month) to make it clear that it is an international event, and not restricted to just one nation.

It's that time of year again!

NaGaCreMo: interNational Game Creation Month was started back in 2008. Its simple goal is to motivate programmers to accomplish something related to a programming project before January 31st, 2011, without being a competition. This means there are no rewards, besides the warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment you've given yourself.

Any programming project is accepted as well as any language and game making tool, but there are a couple of guidelines:

[1]-If you're programming/making a game with anything besides a TGC product you won't be able to start a WIP thread, although you can still add the project to the NaGaCreMo thread.

[2]-Make sure you're programming something that will run on Windows (that's the most popular OS on this forum ).

[3]-You can use your own hand-crafted media (music, graphics, textures, anything) or royalty-free media. The choice is up to you, as long as you don't infringe any copyright.

As people sign on to this and tell us what their projects are, I hope to be able to contact one of the newsletter people (Richard Vanner for example) and have them include information about NaGaCreMo for the January newsletter (if I had remembered about NaGaCreMo this year instead of being reminded about it in the Posting Competition I'd have contacted him in November and asked him to mention it then). If your project is in a working, shareable state perhaps it could be mentioned in the newsletter as well.

And so...the sign-up list. Who's interested?

To sign up, you must say the following...

I, CoffeeCoder, pledge to complete a working game/game demo before January 31st, 2011

My project will be a small platform game starring a marble and I'll build a level editor alongside it.

People who've signed up:

For anybody who wants the NaGaCreMo banner (created by thenerd) for your sig, here's the code you'll need to copy into your signature:

Or you can use Deathead's design:

I, Mad Nightmare, pledge to complete a working game/game demo/ general project before January 31st,2011. Just wondering, are we allowed to enter with a project were currently working on? I've been working on a space RTS for about a week now and I'm quite motivated and don't want to have to start a new one.

Hmm...might be worth a try:

Simple reason I say demo, well, I've got already got something planned, full game is not viable, at least with my current PC's lack of power (Can't do any of my 3D modeling).

What I'm doing? Well, you'll have to wait to the demo, assuming I remain true to my word.

Wow! Great response already!

Yes, you can absolutely work on a currently active project, no matter how old it is.

I forgot to mention this in the original post, but we really need a banner/signature, no larger than 600x120 (I'd say more like 500x80 just to make it a little neater). Who wants to work on that? It needs to say "NaGaCreMo 2011" at the top, and then maybe at the bottom it can say "Participant" for the signature image or something like that.

Good job, Deathead!

Does everybody want to use that as the signature? I like it, it's simple and it gets the point across.

Sorry, posted too soon!

Thenerd, I LOVE your design too...I think I'll use that for the banner image for the thread and Deathead's can be the signature for everyone participating. How does that sound?

Ok, cool. I'm still not sure if I will have time to participate, I was thinking of making a physics game, but I haven't purchased Box2d yet. I think I've used up all my energy on the compo entry...

It's not really a competition, but rather a month of coding to encourage people to finish a project. There isn't a prize, but if you do finish something, that's awesome, and you have the satisfaction of knowing you've done it by the deadline.

Shh I was, but the project has died in my eyes, most of the code I had written for that ported easily into a space based rts, I'm thinking of keeping the name the same, it'll just be a slightly different setting and allows for more creativity. I've also never played a 3d space RTS, so in my eyes( although i'm well aware there are existing games ) i'm inventing a new genre.

This should be fun to see what the projects turn out like. doing a search of NaGaCreMo shows there are W.I.P's with that prefix, should we do the same for any wip we make?

Hmm, good question...I think it's better suited for individuals, as the main goal is to motivate a programmer to finish a project (or a good working chunk of it) by the deadline, and a team kind of motivates individual programmers already.

I'm going to update the first post now. I was going to do that last night but ran out of time.

I don't know. I kind of like the idea of teams. Or at least small teams. I think that NaGaCreMo is a good motive to start a game, if you have a small team you have more incentive to finish, because someone else is trying to accomplish a finished game as well.

I wish I could enter, but from where I am in the progress of my project, I dont think it would be a smart thing to say done by february. Not even a dbp project

But heck, I dont care!

I, Chris, pledge to create a working game *test* by January 31st, 2011.

The game will be titled "Track", and it is like nothing youve ever seen before. A game where physics is the only way to get anything done. Every action has a price.

Yeah, I'd say that three would be the biggest a team should be for this kind of thing.

Three is a good number. I say let's all stick to that.

So, I've begun work on my little game (it's very much just a mock-up so far), and after a couple of hours of programming (you try programming while unpacking and see how long it takes you! ), I came up with this for my main menu:

Tell me that isn't the messiest code you've seen for a GUI system?

Does anybody know if there's any way to still show previous menus from a submenu? You'll notice that I had to re-print all of the buttons when displaying my sub menu for the options...is there a way to program this so that I DON'T have to re-print all of that stuff?

Any advice appreciated!

Blood and gore's okay...just not in extreme amounts.

We do want to keep this at least a little family-friendly, 'cause you never know if there's a ten year old floating around on the boards here.
