A: You're a cow, falling down a hole. You steer your cow to avoid crashing into the walls and you collect bonuses, as shown in this video:

A: Nope, you play as a cow falling down a hole; seems logical to me.

Get ready for mind expanding place-holder artwork



Yeah - you can't really tell much from the screenie, so I'll explain.

The blue square at the top will be you - a cow.

The blue bars at the side are the sides of the infinite hole that you are travelling down.

And that's as far as I've got 2 days into the development.

I will post the source code as I start releasing demos - but the code is not safe enough to release into the wild yet - and it would probably do more harm than good!

Looking good. I'd be happy to make an animated cow sprite for you if you'd like one

Alternatively I could make him (her?) up as a ragdoll character using my spriteFX tool with some simple import code... although why I'm helping the competition I don't know

Really neat idea this, I can just imagine a cow plummeting down there with little legs flapping, then splat!

If I can knock base jumpers into the rocks on the way down, then I'm sold

Cheers guys!

I made a little video of the progress up to yesterday. I'm clearly not as productive as Cliff as mine still looks more like a bad children's drawing, but I think the vid gives you more of an idea of how it will play out.

I captured it on my phone as the game is quite sensitive to the frame rate at the moment and I figured the screen capture stuff would make it look really bad.

Annoyingly my phone seems to only capture in portrait mode - despite holding it in landscape so the video is on its side

(I also apologise for my wife's use of lanuage)

But iam like Heinz ketchup and sometimes do a lot in a short time

Probably why eat drink slay take ages for me and van

I get bored really fast.

I think the mechanics looks good and with bax cow so is it a winner

I enter more to support the competition and its fun if I would manage to win something .

@Ched80, attached are the gfx you asked for. I added a little dancing cow animation. You don't have to use it but it might be useful for the menu or something

I've included large and small versions of the gfx although you could easily scale them up or down in GIMP.

Let me know if you need any changes / extras.

Moderate progress yesterday. I got the dancing cow, that baxslash kindly made, working in the menu screen as this short vid shows.



I also replaced the single sprite for a bunch of spirtes for the player so that the cow is now a ragdoll as she falls.



I've started to implement a high score, but only a basic one - next will be jazz like adverts, better wall graphics and collectables.

Cheers guys!

I was away on training in Paris last week so I didn't have much time to post, but I did work on HC as much as I could.

Here's a short summary:
I've completely changed how the walls are positioned,
I've added the mobile control method.
I've added two types of bonus that can be collected as you fall, a bubble that slows you down but bursts when you hit a wall and another, which I haven't quite thought through yet



I've also been working with easter bunny's off-line apk builder and it's brilliant! I can't recommend it enough. You can get it here.

Anyway, I had an awful bug yesterday. The game was crashing whenever I created a new physics sprite, specifically the spite of the bubble to slow the cow down. Eventually I tracked it down to the physics touch commands which were called directly after the sprite was made. It seems creating a new physics sprite and then testing the collision of existing sprites causes AppGameKit to crash.

Limited progress yesterday. I made mainly cosmetic changes - adding a sky while you are above the hole and adding a shaddow-like sprite between the two walls to give the hole more definition.

I also added a replay button so you can jump straight back into the game and I added a FaceBook post button, but functionally that doesn't work yet.

There's still quite a bit to do, but with about a month left, it should be doable.

Made some good progress yesterday.

I got the AppGameKit adverts working and implemented the second bonus type.

The ad implementation went really well - the only tweak I had to make was to fix the ad sprite to the screen as HC uses setviewoffset, but apart from that the code is directly from the ad network *.agc file.

The bonus I originally was going to implement was a parachute, but I never really liked the idea, but luckily on the train I hit upon the idea of the bonus shrinking the Cow to half it's size, sort of Alice in Wonderland-esk.

I also feel I'm at the stage to get some play test feedback so please download the demo here.

Just Downloaded and played your demo onto my Nexus 7 (2012)

Here are some thoughts

1)Runs very smooth
2)Graphics are great - Love the disassembling cow
3)It is maybe just a bit hard - best score of 25
4)Music is great
5)Bug - I drifted off screen to the right at the start before the cave and cow disappeared and it just "fell" for ever - see screenshot. (highest score ever ?)
6)I don't like the blue border - see screenshot.
7)Message at start - Invalid command called, Facebook commands are not enabled with lite player.

A little earlier than initially thought bax; here's the link to the Windows version.

Ignore the on-screen instructions: A is left and D is right - movement won't actually work until you're in the hole.

Which brings me onto Jammy's comments. Great feedback Jammy! I'm going to stick with the difficulty - I think it makes the higher scores more rewarding hopefully I've solved the problem where you can drift off-screen, someone at work also did the same and got a similar high score . Consider the blue border to be gone too - I agree it was nasty looking so have reverted back to black.

The bug with the FB commands - I am still working on. Paul posted a fix in the AutoMayte thread, so I just need to pull my finger out and fix it.

Ok, progress today: I implemented some on-screen instructions and fixed some of the bugs people are reporting. I also added a little feedback to indicate each 50 m milestone and an horizontal marker to show how far you fell on the previous go.

Happy mother's day!

Made to reasonable progress despite not really intending to do any work on HC over this weekend.

The major feature to have been implemented in an on-line high score courtesy of Phaelax, who is offering the service to anyone. Take a look here.

Rather than implement a classic high-score table, the high-score are marked on the hole as a yellow dashed line together with the owner's name. Only if you fall further than the target will your score be registered. Only the top ten are recorded and there are separate tables for the Android and PC versions as the game is significantly easier on the PC.

Anyway, both downloads have been updated. Enjoy!

Firstly I'd like to say thanks for everyone who has downloaded the game so far. The game passed 100 downloads this morning, making this my most successful game so far

It's also been great looking at the high-score lists and seeing the scores slowly creep up.

Today I made some reasonable progress, I adjusted the hole walls colours to be more brick like. I also started work on some of the buried items that will be shown on the back-drop - these have no effect other than make the back-ground more interesting.

I've also incorporated AdMob alongside the AppGameKit ad network - only one ad will be shown at any one time, but the time will be split, roughly 50:50, between the two ad networks.

I've also started changing the main game mechanic after a suggestion by my wife and, I have to admit, the change has made the game quite a bit more fun.

More tweaking today. I feel I'm very close to finishing now.

I need to redo some of the art and fix the Fackbook integration, but I'd say the game is now 95% complete.

I added a Slide DB to try and get additional feedback and I've also made the first steps onto Google Play.

No screenie today as it hasn't changed too much.

Great game Ched!

My friend at work managed to pull a score of 674. He thought he was top of the board, but, realised that the 'world best' is 680. He is not happy! haha.

One thing I have noticed - the mute button doesn't work. You can press it, but, it doesn't mute the music.

Did you want me to get those graphics sorted for you? Can you send me an email with any buttons/graphics you need and I will get them done over the weekend. They will be in your inbox by Sunday evening.

Cheers Jay! I'd love some gfx, but i have made my own alternative buttons, so when I've updated the apk - maybe take a look and let me know if you think you they're good enough?

Yeah - the mute isn't active yet I just updated it to fix some advert bugs.

The mute is fixed in the next version.

This whole competition is a bit funny really. For all the time I've actually been trying to make a game, I've never actually released one. So if it wan't for this crazy 8 week competition I'd still be making almost-but-not-quite-ready versions of games. Having now finished and released something feels great - even if it is a really simple casual game, I'm pretty chuffed with what I've ended up with and chuffed I can actually say I'm a proper game developer

The algorithm for the whole took a few attempts.

My first idea was to just place the bricks, alightly offset from one another by a random amount. This was rubbish and you could pretty much just let the cow fall down the middle.

My next idea was to use two sine wave functions, one for the centre line and one for the hole "gap", but this was too uniform.

In the end I went for randomly setting a target centre position and hole gap and then randomly adjusting the brick positions towards the target. Here's the code for my brick positioning:

Your game says my best score is 2874 when I only got 287! But besides that, I really like it great job! I especially love the shrink powerup, the way the cows arms move with it are hilarious for some reason!

[EDIT] Yup, got a score of 332 and the menu showed it as a world best with 3320. You should check and see that something isn't wrong with the scoreboard.
