Hey All;

Thought I would post some of the Screenies and discuss some of the work I have done on this project.

What is it? Though I have not come up with an official name for the engine as of yet, it is designed to be a modable RPG maker. The game style is similar to the old Bard's Tale games (Party based, Single Player, Turn Based). A 3D map shows in the upper left (No overhead so you can actually get lost if you do not pay attention). Though I am updating the graphics of this retro style it is designed to make games based on Story and Substance over "chrome" as I find most RPG's these days.

What Have I Done? So far I have been working primarily on the toolsets (Level maker, NPC Script Editor, Item Editor) and the main portion of the base Engine (Movement, Party Creation, Combat, Stores, etc.) No worthwhile Playable Demo as of yet (Just a basic tomb crawl with no spice yet).

Anyone interested in contributing and media (2d monster images, textures for towns and dungeons) it would be appreciated. I don't realy need any 3d models at this time since the map is generated by planes only.

I will post one in a few weeks. I want to wait this long for a few reasons the main reason is there is alot of media (textures for the walls and such) and I don't want to post a 20meg file that is a waste of peoples time just to show movement. I want it to be worth the time it takes to download since alot of people still use dial up. Also I don't want to get ripped apart for a weak demo, right now I am working primarily on the toolsets.

Hmm.. I have been trying to post a movement demo but apollo keeps going to a done screen and the post does not appear (it is 14 meg). I will try to upload it from school tommorow, my lab has a fater connection. If it still does not post I will have to find a place to host it. I have stripped the Demo down to movement only, i ripped out the media for the title screen, music etc to make the file smaller.

An updated screen shot. I have worked in some of the animated magical icons (They are between the view window and the text box)
Have a few more to go. I will be posting the Character artwork within the next few days, once I get it colored correctly and all.

I agree Baggers. IMHO That will be the strong point of the game, the graphics and interface are secondary.

Here is the link to my walkthrough. Note that this is only a walkaround demo to show what the inteface looks like and how the movement works in the game. You can move around but there is no actual game to play yet. Enjoy

wow, looks really nice! other than moving way fast (maybe my machine speed?) it's really well done. Collision is nice, some glitches with some buildings not having the blocks behind the doors, but thats to be fixed anyway. Really top stuff on that one.

It does run a little fast, I am hoping as I add more code for the game play it slows down. The map itself is not great at the moment, partially because alot of those areas won't be seen, there will be an image that pops up in the view window for the Bar, guild, templ etc. So I didn't place tiles there to save on polygons. Of course the lack of polygons (about 2200 per map) is why you move so darn fast. I may have to stick a 10,000 polygon sphere in there somewhere to slow it down a little. Glad you liked it

wow. The demo's very nice. The keys are a little too sensitive, and someplaces the map is messed up(no floor, just blackness) inside some rooms. But otherwise, it is very cool

This shows the Character View open, Ignore the Character Image, it is just a placeholder for now. I am working on the final(or semi final) images and will start to post them after they are done.

Just an update. I have gotten most of the commands up and working for the interface. Combat, Stores, temples, taverns, gateways to new maps. Mostly just need to begin data construction so those commands can actually do something. Finally got a text input function i have been working on to do what I wanted it to.

Little Competition here.
Name the Demo Boss- give me a little idea about the guy (just a blurb to sum him/ or her up) The winner will be announced when you play the demo.

Demo looks great. I'm a big fan of Bard's Tale style games, it brings me back to the old days.

A word of advice for your character movement. Don't leave it up to the rest of your engine to "slow it down". You should be using timer-based movement, as well as a smarter input routine that only reads keys maybe every 200 ms for movement. And possible for it to recognize when someone taps a key, or when someone is holding down the key. It can be done with a little bit of tricky programming.

But like I said, looks good so far!

I'm not a real programmer but I play one with DBPro!

Well I have all the buildings (shops) working correctly, Almost have all the ducks in a row here. I have encrypted the text files to prevent cheating. Here is a screenshot showing all the little animated doodads on the center line now. Ignore the placeholder for the tavern picture.

Cheers

Hey! any Ideas for the demo boss?

EDIT- Tomorrow should be the day I unveil the character portraits. Drumroll and fanfare please.

And of course the Female.

These are still the drafts, gonna make a few minor changes to the finals, like making that one big axe for the male I think.

99.99% of the forum users can ignore this but their are always those few. The media I am posting for character portraits are not free for use in other projects. If you want to use them email me and we can talk about it. (Not that they are that great anyway.)

I was worried that this project would fail due to lack of media for characters/monsters. But if you can sketch that good and find someone to redraft with color, you basically have as many graphics as you have time to make. Very impressive!

Monsters/ Npcs will be 2d, they replace the 3d map view when you encounter them. they are 290 wide x 258 high (pixels) if anyone would like to contribute. I do find I am spending more time creating media then programming (ah to have a magic artomatic machine)

as for pro color and ink, I have to shell out some cash for that (and I am) so that work will be behind the sketches (probably gonna spend about $1,000 on the inking)

As a plus I plan to eventually release a RPG art collection with a bunch of these pics and some textures etc for $10 or so to use royalty free and will hopefully make some of the money back there.

They could be, I had not planned on doing it that way but that is a good idea. Of course that means most of the monsters, dudes etc will need to be drawn from knee or mid section up.

I wouldn't bother placing them in the 3D world. Just make combat escape the 3D world and be self-contained in your 2D turn-based world. Much easier that way, and doesn't restrict your graphics. Devil's Whiskey did that recently and it works.

A little update. I am talking to Bjorn Lynne about composing some custom music for this game. For those of you who do not know who he is you can check here [href]www.lynnemusic.com[/href]
He has stuff premade that you can license, he is what i would call tops in the industry.
