DEMO VERSION 2 AVALABLE. SCROLL DOWN.

Hello! Phoenix Fire and I are working on a game called "Metal Runner". Basically you play as this little metal guy and you run around multiple levels, starting at one speed and constantly picking up speed. The objective of each level is to reach the end area, which is marked by a large black and white checkered beam coming from the sky unto the end area. You can jump up onto platforms and hit power-ups while trying to deal with the increasing speed. You'll need to think quickly in later levels, because there is no way to slow down once you're going fast...

A few things will be changed at the end, just that some of them are more complete than others at the moment.

Finished:

Levels Completed: 47
Player Controls
Camera Controls
Consecutive Level Loading
Level Saving
5 power-ups
Collision
Sky and a few other effects
Checkpoints
Some sounds and music
More than mountains in the distance...
Main Menu and the Sub-Menus
Save/Load Games
Replays

I may have forgotten a few simple things.

Working on now:

More Levels

Ideas/things that may be done:

LOTS More Interface
Some sort of Ranking/ Scoring system.

Yeah I may have forgotten some things because a lot of it is thought of on the fly. My "planning" process was not very detailed. It just explained a few simple things lol.

Anyway, here are some screenshots to look at. I hope to release a demo soon.

Screenshots of Level 1

In-Game screenshot

Zoomed in:

Screenshots of the Forest World

Old First Demo...

I have finally managed to get the demo version up and running. It includes 3 sample levels, and you get to unlock one extremely simple power-up. It demonstrates 3 of the 6 sky settings that I have so far. You'll need to pass each level to get to the next.

The objective of each level is to get to the black and white checkered beam (now surrounded by a yellow light) at the end of each level. You need to land on the platform that the beam is on in order to win the level.

There's no main menu or anything yet.

Controls:

Use the left/right arrowkeys to turn and press SPACE to jump.

You can download it using the download tab.

I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN AROUND TO COMPLETING THE SECOND DEMO!!! YAY!

In the demo, I wrote "freeplay.com" I meant "freeplaymusic.com", sorry

Controls

Left Arrow Key-- Turn Left
Right Arrow Key-- Turn Right
Spacebar-- Jump
P Key-- Pause Game

Lol, it features 6 levels and the 6th onen should be in the forest. Download it here>>

Metal Runner Demo # 2 {WinRAR, added level skip option in pause menu (press s and click RESTART at the same time}

MEtal Runner Demo # 2 {WinZIP, added level skip option in pause menu (press s and click RESTART at the same time}

Sugguestions on things to add, comments on how it looks thus far, all are welcome.

Looks nice. Is it a bit like Skyroads?

The level looks really good, but I can't make out the runner, or what that is in the middle of the screen. But this is a game that I am interested in, and you can make the runner 2D if it is easier to make that way.

Thanks! The runner himself is easier to see in the game. I've posted a zoomed-in screenshot of him in the first post along with the other screenshots. You should see him now, he's just the Hogman from DarkMatter2 with a different texture.

I can help you with the saving/loading, and scoring system if you like. This game seems really near complete, it is definately worthy of the W.I.P. board!

OKAY! I have finally completed the first Demo Version. You can download it from my first post

EDIT: The demo will not upload... Can somebody tell me how to upload a ZIP or RAR file as an attachment to the post? I tried using the one that says "Browse" next to it, and the File Uploader Applet doesn't work. Any ideas on how to do it here without using another File Hosting website? The file is about 16,000 KB. Is that too big?

Wow, that's large! Its not too large for uploading it here, though. Here is a good file hosting service:

You don't need to register or anything.

looks like a fun one! Do all of the levels have a different color as their theme? think that would be interesting.

@UFO: I don't think it's so large. 1 KB is not nearly as big as 1MB, so it doesn't seem so large. Translated into MB it's only about 15. So the file is about 15MB big. Not too bad I think. Thanks for the link btw But about the link... Can I post up my game using it if the file has music from www.Freeplay.com in it? Does that count as copyright as long as I am using it for non-commercial use?

EDIT: Nevermind it is large. I have no idea why though...

@Oddmind: Thanks! Yes, so far I have 6 different color settings made. Some levels share the same color setting. The one in the screenshots is the Sunset one. You'll see 2 others in the demo.

To All:
Does anybody know how to reduce the size of a RAR or ZIP document? I'm afraid that people will not want to wait so long for a download.

EDIT: Nevermind I found the problem. All of my media is too big... I'm going to try resizing it.

Okay I have managed to reduce the size from 16,000KB to 5,000KB. Not too bad I guess.
Anyway, the DEMO IS READY! It's in my first post.

I liked the game.

I completed all 3 levels. They were very fun, though the camera might could be raised up a bit.

Over all I think your on the right track, maybe the scenery could be a bit more visually appealing. Just a bit of versatility.

This game was something special! I really like the surrealistic look of it. The only thing I didn´t like was that the animation speed of the metal dude was too slow.
A really good game, great job!

Thanks for the positive and supportive responses! It's good to hear that the game wasn't too slow on your computers! I was afraid that would happen.

@Oddmind: So when you say the camera "might could be raised up a bit", you mean that I should keep the camera above the metal guy at all times? If so, I'll do that, all I have to do is change one number from 1 to 0. And the scenery, I wrote about it in my first post, how I planned to put more than mountains and a sky in the distance. Any ideas about what to add? Trees, rocks, etc?

@Moomin: Thanks, I will keep working on it!

@zzz: Thanks! I guess the animation is a bit slow, maybe I'll speed it up to be 2 times as faster or something. I haven't worked on it that much.

Nice game, good sound effects, good challange, good graphics.

Only suggestions:

1. Like Oddmind said, change of scenery, eventually. Maybe leave the first 10 levels like the first three, and then switch worlds or something.

2. Faster animation, like zzz said.

3. More powerup stuff, like plateforms that make you bounce, etc.

Great start.

Thanks for the complements (<==spelling?). You read my mind. I included no powerups in the DEMO, but I have 2 others working and one is a WIP right now. And the scenery change... I can make that happen I think. Any ideas on what to do?

Hmm, I would say what you have now looks like a desert land, dry and brown. How about one with something like a forest background, light green plateforms, logs to jump on, etc?

Sounds reasonable. Just that everything is made of boxes andI'm not sure I want to change that... I may. Anyway, when you say Forest Background, what do you mean? Are you talking 2D or 3D here? 3D trees on the terrain or just make the skysphere more green?

EDIT: Oh, and you said "plateforms". It's "platforms"

What the heck did you do to the music playback? It's all shuffly and blippy over here.

All I did was make it of lower quality as to not take up too much space, but not that low! Apparently it's not that way for everybody else! Turn the sound off if it bothers you, for I have no idea what is wrong. Maybe your computer doesn't like MP3 Files? Some of them don't, my old one didn't.

That's complete nonsense. My computer can play other DarkBASIC games fine, with MP3s and everything. Apparently you did something really weird to the music so that it plays super fast. It works fine through Windows Media Player, so my guess is that your coding is really strange.

Well, I noticed that the background appears to be a skybox with sand dunes, or mountains, whatever. The point is it looks "desertish", so you could make or find another skybox, but with a background of trees. It should just be an image, like you are doing right now.

Actually there's no skybox. The mountains are a matrix, and the "skybox" is a skysphere with clouds. Anyway, I'll see what I can do. Maybe some vines... Well, thanks for your support.

EDIT: OH I KNOW! I did something like this before! Transparent plains with trees on them in front of the sky! Yeah this shouldn't be too hard.

Wow, that was really cool! It was kind of slow though. The player didn't run as fast as I would have liked. Maybe its the fps. Next time, you cound have it print the fps so we can post our fps and our system specs so you will have an idea of how fast it runs on other comps. Since the fps wasn't there, I couldn't really figure out if its because its slow, or it's programmed to be slow.

Anyway, nice game, and great graphics. Keep up the good work!

I've played it and it's great

Some things that should be changed...

You die faster
Maybe an arrow pointing the way at least on the first level it's kind of dark
On the second level you should have the corners of the floating bricks over lap even a tad would work

Speed needs to be changed:
It seems like once you hit a certain point you just start to rocket, whereas you have a guy running and well it dont have rockets.

If at first you dont succeed, LOWER YOUR STANDARDS.

I actually like that. I'm into games that really test your reflexes. I'm a ddr guy so I like really fast games Which actually gives me an idea. What if, for extra stuff maybe implement something where you also have to use awsd or something corresponding with something else on the screen. Just a thought...

@sneaky smith12: The demo levels need no improvement, for they are not actually in the game itself! I threw them together in about 8 minutes for the demo version, I don't want to be cheap and have the same levels appear in the demo and the game.

As for the rocket thing, I changed that just a tad from the demo. It is just the motion blur kicking in It makes the level harder because illusions can pop up into your head.

I made it so you die at the same rate no matter the gravity amount in the game, not the demo. Maybe I'll reduce even that death time.

@The Crazy: Thanks As for WASD, I don't want to make the game too hard. The demo levels are almost nothing compared to some of the others I am working on

Other comments or sugguestions are also welcome.

How about "light bridge", that automatically makes a bridge in a gap, so you don't have to jump.

played it for a bit. good fun but a little tough (i hope the final version grants plenty of lives). maybe my reactions are slowing...

power-up ideas:

some kinda braking system, even if it's a one-time use thing. since it's "Metal Runner", how about powered Magnetic Boots? they can have a battery life and maybe re-chargable? or, in the Snow/Ice world, a slowing "Freeze" power-up or, power-down? you can be creative here for each world.

i gotta repeat the wall running idea. maybe another use for the magnetic boots?

how about power-downs? a "dizzy" mode where the arrow keys are flopped for a bit? have a small "dizzy" image over the runners head that fades as the effect dwindles away?

world idea:

Electric Storm: less "gaps" but random Lightning Strikes to avoid. (might add a strafe mode for this? ie, double-tap right-key slides right for a bit. give it an over-all electric storm feel? just seems to go good with a "Metal" theme.

or, maybe, the gaps are electrified water pools? or just have lightning arcing in the gaps? something like that.

general ideas:

wall bouncing and/or mid-air spins? ie, in air, right/left rotation.

enough for now. could do a lot to change it up yet keep with the theme.
