For those who don't know, Beyond Life was my entry into the Nvidia/TGC game contest. Do a search in YouTube for Beyond Life to catch the 2 uploaded videos

I thought I would post this thread as I find it interesting discovering peoples inspirations and sketch work.

Beyond Life is based on a story I came up with when I was about, oooh ... well i was in school anyway, not long started secondary school. The original story was a called Officer 24, and featured the main character as a guy called Edward:

Bare in mind I did all these images ( minus the renders and in-game shots )as a child, yonks ago

Now, Edward has been my personal cartoon character since i could put pen to paper, so naturally i elected him as the star.
The original Story for Officer 24 was deeply inspired by Disney's Sci-Fi classic The Black Hole. Edward and his crew were on a space ship called the Kal-Manora:

The ship design was again inspired by The Black Hole, but also there were elements of Aliens, 2001: a space odyssey and Event Horizon. The ship changed shape for the game, featuring a unique and compact design:

So anyway, the Kal-Manora was built for the purpose of traveling into a black hole, but it wouldn't be a space exploration story without disaster:

In short, the black hole revealed a few truths about the main character and forced Edward to fight himself regarding a few secrets he had to hide from the other crew members:

The black hole was also inhabited by a race of creatures who, quite literally, knew absolutely everything about anything:

It wasn't just the supernatural that Edward had to fight though, there were other crew members, scared crew members, who would turn against him at the brink of destruction:

Although the story to Beyond Life is rewritten and far more mature, the heart of Officer 24 remains. I SOOO can't wait for the game to be eventually uploaded, because you may find a few nods to its original inspiration.

Games which have inspired me, well.... there is only one. Deus Ex is the only game which made my draw drop, a game so intelligent it has been with me ever since I started planning Beyond Life.

Thanks you for reading this thread, I hope I've provided some ideas or inspiration i hope that soon, you too will be able to play as Edward, and uncover the mysteries of the unknown aboard the kal-Manora:

Thinking about it, I think i was about halfway through secondary school when I started getting some visuals down. But I've been drawing Edward comics since primary school

My artwork is pretty varied, some of the drawing are in pen, others pastels and card board cuttings. Whatever I could get my hands on really!

I think it would be nice to see more artwork for projects being undertaken on the forum, theres something "warm" about seeing a hand drawn image.... i don't know, maybe it's just me

Wehtam,

Thanks for showing this. When I see creation at this level, I get a little discouraged in my own ability, thinking "I will never get to that level". Knowing that your abilities and interests began as a small child, and developed over many years makes me feel a little better. lol

The truth is, I know I will never get to that level, because I don't have the love you so obviously do for telling a story and bringing it to life. I will settle for having some fun and seeing the amazing things that people can do.

I can't wait to play it!

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

Hey, Wehtam, any idea when this will be a completed game? I have downloaded and played the demo. It defines swwwwwweeeeettttttttt!!!!!! I would hope, though, that it would be finished in a newer version of FPSC. As it is, it is an awesome game.

You know your code sucks when it does what you want before you know what you want.
