Greetings fellow FPSCreator users!

This is my first time sponsoring a contest, so bare with me.
I want to make it simple, so I will try to limit this contest in prizes, and file sizes, but not in creativity or imagination.
So, here goes…

Rules

(1) This is a MAP contest, which is limited to users of the Free Version of FPSCreator. (Those who do not already have the build option)
Anyone who already has purchased a license of the full version of FPSC, or the Build Upgrade, is not eligible and their entry will be disqualified.

(2) All entries will consist of either a ZIP or RAR file that includes one FPM file and up to 10 FPI files.
If you choose to not include any custom scripts, then you may simply upload your FPM file without it being compressed in a ZIP or RAR file.

NOTE:
The FPM file is the map file created when you save a map and it is located in the mapbank folder. This file is mandatory, because I cannot load your map without it.
The FPI files are AI Script files that are created by you and are optional.
You do not need to write custom scripts to enter, but you are allowed to include up to 10 custom scripts if you choose to include them.

(3) All custom scripts must be created and stored in a new ‘cec1’ folder created for this contest.
If custom scripts are included then they must reside in that folder, which should be placed in the scriptbank folder. IE… scriptbank/cec1
Custom scripts are optional and not required to enter the contest.

(4) Map size is limited to the entire 40x40 segment grid including all 20 stories high.
In other words, you can use the entire map grid if you want, but you are limited to one map, meaning only one FPM file.

(5) No custom media other than FPI scripts are allowed. That means you need to use only the stock media. No custom sounds, HUDs, or models. STOCK ONLY!
This is in an effort to keep file sizes down so I can do the judging timely, and to keep development simple for new users.
This is a level design contest not a modeling contest, so those technical modeling skills are not required for this contest.

(6) All entries must be uploaded to this thread on or before 11:59 pm EST September 30th, 2009.
Any entry posted after 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time on September 30th, 2009 will be disqualified.

(7) One entry per person.

Prizes
There will be TWO (2) winners and TWO (2) prizes. (One prize for each category - see amendment)
Each Winner will receive a copy of FPSCreator Bonanza.
The Bonanza includes the full version of FPSC + Video Tutorials + 8 Model Packs.

Modification
I do not plan on changing any rules except to reword it for clarification, but I may have to shorten the deadline if there gets to be an overwhelming response and I start getting more entries than I can handle. This contest officially starts September 1st, so I will try to have any rule editing done by then. (in case I forgot something)

Good Luck!

AMENDMENT

There will be two categories of entries for this contest. FRIENDS & INDIVIDUAL

Let's have everyone say whether they had help or not.
Just say "Friends" or "Individual" when you submit your entry. (that same post)
I think you know which one applies to your case, so we can use honor system for that.

Yes, asking questions in the forums can be help, but that is not what I mean by friends. (you still individual developer running with your own plans)

By friends, I mean sitting down together at the computer with your friend, or instant messaging them with step by step instructions or ideas.

This is fair for everyone, and gives us more than one prize.

GOOD LUCK!

UPDATE September 16, 2009
Well, we are about half way to the dealine for entries, so I thought I would go ahead and edit this to reflect the number of entries.

                              ENTRIES
FRIENDS
September 28 - "ThePSXGamer" by ThePSXGamer & Friend(s)

INDIVIDUAL
September 19 - "The Game" by Field meister_Gilmer
September 30 - "The Conker Bosses" by Lemmywinks
September 30 - "The Mansion" by Deltayo

The deadline for submitting entries has passed.
Thanks to all of you who entered.

Congratulations to ThePSXGamer for winning the "FRIENDS" Category prize by default, since they had the only entry for that category.

                                          CONTEST WINNERS

Well, since this was a simple contest that limited the contestants to only the stock media that comes with the free version; there is no sense in getting very complex with the judging. Therefore, I will keep that simple too and just describe a few likes and dislikes and then maybe a suggestion or two.

ThePSXGamer

Likes
Very Nice Map Layout
Good Weapon and Ammo Placement
Good Enemy Placement
Switches were a nice challenge

Dislikes
The switches may have been a little too complex for some people. (Too many)

Suggestions
Be careful not to make challenges too difficult, or you may lose the players’ interest in the game.

Field_Meister_Gilmer’s “The Game”

Likes
Straight forward design
Nice use of lights

Dislikes
Culling issues with entities showing through floor segments
There were a lot of weapons and ammo

Suggestions
Giving ample weapons is a must, but having too many weapons and ammo available do not stress the importance of ammo management, which can be the difference in life or death.

Lemmywinks’ “The Conker Bosses”

Likes
Nice weapon placement
Aggressive Enemies
Great diversity of stock media (Even included the stock video!)
Nice map layout

Dislikes
I saw gaps through some of the segments, so the placement could have been better. (Unless they were intentional peepholes to the outside)

Suggestions
This map was great and I have only one suggestion; keep doing your thing!

Deltayo’s “The Mansion”

Likes
Expansive Map
The fact that you entered even though it was not finished (determination)

Dislikes
Excessive use of light ranges

Suggestions
I know this was a one map contest so you were aiming for a grand design, but keep each level small enough that the load times do not get out of hand or you might lose the player before they ever start.
Limit light ranges to default or smaller if you want to avoid some of the loading issues.
Test often. (I only say that because I did experience a crash with this one, but we know it was not complete so it’s okay)

As I said before you guys are all winners for having the guts to put your map out there for all to see and comment on.
I also said that “each winner will receive a copy of FPS Creator Bonanza”.

So, there you have it; YOU ALL WON!!!

I doubled the prize for this contest from one copy to two when we added a Friends category, and now I am doubling it again due to the limited number of entries.

All four of you have won, and each of you will receive a copy of FPS Creator Bonanza!!!

Congratulations!!!

I will get together with you guys in the next couple of days to get the info I need to pass to Rick.
I’ll send it all to him on Monday when he returns from their weekend. (No orders filled on weekends)
So, please be patient, and have some fun making more or finishing those maps whilst you wait.

Great idea! Im sure this will influence many to download fpsc as well as popping open there own free versions. This should help gain awareness about fpsc and encourage people to give it a chance. Who knows they might win there own

I would join myself but its obvious i cannot

Also a quick suggestion. It would be cool if entries would also include a screenshot of there game wheather its in the post or attached so those who dont download there map can still see a shot of what it may be like.

Sorry, but the whole idea is to help someone get the build option.

Quote: "It would be cool if entries would also include a screenshot of there game wheather its in the post or attached so those who dont download there map can still see a shot of what it may be like."

That would be cool and is a good idea, but optional.

Someone that does not have a license already would have to submit the entry.
Sorry, but I can't make exceptions to the rules for one person because then I would have to do it for everybody.
Then, we might as well not have any rules and that would result in total chaos.
Chaos is bad, mmmmkay?

I plan to hold a retexturing contest soon, which will be open to everybody. (still deciding on the model to use)

Great idea!
We can just spread the word with links to the thread.
Will do.

Yeah, the Bonanza offer from TGC is outstanding, and does make a great start into FPSC.
I plan to hold more contests if this one goes well, so maybe we'll see several talented new comers get Bonanzanated.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you and you mean to tell your friend to enter, but really, he should download the free version and try to win it for himself, if you create it for him then its really your design and not his, as stated you cant enter if you own the full version. Even better, treat your buddy to a copy for his birthday
Really cool competition idea

Well, time to go tell some friends! Very generous CP. Does it have to be ONLY the FPSCFree user, or can he/she have a development team? I know you only get one copy of the prize and this is limited to FPSCFree users, but if several of them banded together...

Best,

That would be allowed if no team members had a licensed version.

So basically, this contest is for new users only, because they would benefit most from the prize.

We need to keep it fair for those who are new and have no help outside of these forums.

Of course they can seek whatever help they need here at the forums or elsewhere, but it is not fair to others for an experienced user to create the entry for them.

I thought as much. Thanks for the clarification CP.

So, if I'm interpreting this correctly, which is probably not true, I COULD help a friend by teaching them how to use the engine, as long as I didn't take part in the development directly. Please correct me if I'm wrong; I don't think I have any friends interested in game design anyway.

I love the idea

Great for the community since it gives all the Free Version users the opportunity to showcase their talent - and the price you are supplying is very generous indeed!

Hey ! Great Idea CE, I have a friend who's been wanting the full version, not to mention all the model packs . I'll go tell him now

Thanks for sponsoring this, hey, you don't mind if I help him with scripting do you?

Also, is it just mapping as in scenery or should it have interaction like a story or fighting?

I might tell one of my friends about this, he was the one who found FPSC originally but never bought it. The bonanza is a great deal.

Sure you can help him, as long as you aren't building it for him.
I'm just saying let them have at it and only help them on the parts they can't figure out for themselves.
If they are not going to use the free version to win (them building it), then will they use the full version after getting the prize?
I just want everyone to have a fair chance at winning, but yes, of course you can help and I encourage it.

Great, tell him and thanks for doing so.
This contest has no theme so having a story line is totally up to the developer.
You build whatever level you want within the guidlines listed above. (one map, upto 10 scripts)
Anything goes as far as storyline and what not.
I'm not getting into any specifics on how I will be judging it so wow me, but remember it's stock media only!
All entries should automatically be family friendly and forum acceptable, since we are only using stock media.
I'm not sure about the free version's media content, but I think it has less than the full version for download purposes.

EDIT
Ok guys.
I gave it some thought (not long because I get sidetracked) and I got an idea.

How's that?

I am changing the first post now to reflect this change.

Oh, count me in!

I've been playing about with FPSC Free for ages, just never got around to buying the full version. This'll be a fun learning experience for me, I've never tried any scripting before and most of the maps I've made have just been minor extensions on the default WW2 mansion - I'll be giving this a lot of thought!

Good Question

One entry per person, which I should have stated so I have added that as #7.

I don't think we will get more than 50 or so people entering at the most. (only one month)
So, the total number of entries should not become a problem as long as we limit it to one entry per person.
Otherwise, it may get out of hand.

Yeah, this should be very interesting.

The prize will be sent from TGC using the same process as if you had bought it yourself.

The winners will simply provide me with their real name (for the license) and mailing address and I'll pass it along to TGC as the shipping addresses for the products.
With your real name and email address for your TGC account, they can set the downloads up for the packs to your order history in your TGC account.

It will be like you buying it for yourself, only I'm the one paying.

Yes, I have already purchased the prizes from TGC, so do not worry about the limited time offer for the Bonanza. (the prizes are waiting for winnners now)

Can someone help me? I wanna use FPSCFree(just downloaded it on another comp) but it says i need to upgrade DirectX on my comp to use it. when i did and tried to install it, my comp shut down. It said an error occured and Windows had to shut down. I am using a Dell Dimension 9100 with Windows pro. I have a really cool level design to enter, that may or may not be unique. Not sure if anyone has used it, but if not it is cool.

Will our maps be judged through the map-editor, through actually playing through the map, or both? Also, my map may be a bit complicated to beat since it will have many puzzles. May I include a walkthrough written in a .txt file that is included in the .rar file? Or does it have to be really simple to beat and straightforward?

I'll check out the layout of the map in the editor then I will play it, so both.

Quote: "Also, my map may be a bit complicated to beat since it will have many puzzles. May I include a walkthrough written in a .txt file that is included in the .rar file?"

Sure you can include a TXT file if you want.

Quote: "Or does it have to be really simple to beat and straightforward? "

The difficulty is totally up to you.
Make it how you want to, just make sure you comply with the rules and use stock media.

Quote: "Might I ask what you will be grading the level on? more funess or awsomeness?"

I'll be judging it on the level design and gameplay.
If it is creative and fun then it stands a good chance of winning.

no, bonanza comes with pre-chosen packs. think of it this way: although only like 3 of the eight model packs are any good, FPSC plus those three packs alone are around 100 bucks. you could get it for free.

No, because they are the packs that are included in the Bonanza offer.

OK, I already know your answer, but i though I would ask: can I use a treeline? doesnt really make the game funner, just look a bit better.

sorry to double post.
Can I post my level at the last second in this forum, and count it as a demo for my upcoming game? Hey, quick question to help the progress of my game: how come doors never seem to fit into walls? or into hallways. cause when i put a door there without putting a hallway, when i try to open it, it opens, and there is a wall there. also, how can you make it so a vent goes through a wall so you can go from one room to another? you will be added in my helped list.

Use door segments to cut a hole in the wall. If you use a door entity, it just places the door without cutting the hole in the wall.

If you use any custom media other than scripts, then you will have violated the rules and your entry will be disqualified.

You can post it at the last second, but don't edit that post after the deadline or I will have to disqualify it since I will not know whether you posted the file 1st or on the edit.
You want the post with your map to show the post time or edit time before the deadline.
If you need to post again then edit up to the deadline, but make a new post after that.

Please, limit your questions to those pertaining to the rules of the contest.
This thread is for contest entries and not for general help with level design or proper editor use.

A contest designed for new users is bound to conjure up a lot of questions, but you guys can find most of those answers in the manual and the commnuity guide.
They are both included in the Docs folder of FPSC, and don't forget the "Thread Subject Search" box at the bottom of this page.
You will find that most of the basic questions have been asked and answered multiple times on the forums already.

Besides, this is a competition, so I doubt that you would get much help from your competitors here in this thread anyway.

Thanks and good luck.

I think you need to post the file on this topic. I however think this is bad for security reasons. Someone besides Conjured could download the files, and that someone could modify the file and submit that file.

Attach the FPM file to a post in this thread.

Quote: "I think you need to post the file on this topic. "

Yes, post it here.

Quote: "I however think this is bad for security reasons."

Security?
I hope the server checks for viruses during the upload.
I usually check anything that I download anyway.

Quote: "Someone besides Conjured could download the files..."

That is the whole idea.
Don't you want someone other than than just me to see the finished level?
By posting the maps here, anyone can play them and give critism.

These are quick levels intended to be made public, so if you are worried about keepng your game ideas secrets, then don't post those here.
There are no media concerns since we are using stock, but I guess you might have scripts you want to keep quiet for later releases.

You have to attach the map to a post here in this thread to enter.
I will start a list of entries on the first post of this thread once I see the attachments start appearing.
