I started out making a Galaga clone but decided to do something a little different. I'm calling it Galagan Arena.

It's sort of a combination of Galaga, Asteroids, and someting else... idunno:

Use the left/right arrow keys to move around the ring. You can use the up/down keys to move closer in the loop but I found that while playing it really didn't come in handy, it's still there though.
Control key fires.

There are challenge modes every couple of stages. You get a bonus if you kill all the ships in the challenge mode.

You have five lives per stage. Your ship has a "shield" that weakens when your shot or run into an asteroid. The shield strengthens with every enemy kill or asteroid destroyed.

Every 12,000 points you get a bonus ship with "rapid fire"... you'll see what I mean.

The first few stages are pretty easy but things start to speed up really fast in the later stages. I can only get upto 9.

Hope you like

Easy CHwilly.

Nice little game you have here! It had a really nice kind of AtariST visual style.

It would be cool if there were some weapons powerups or a greater variety of abilities (being able to jump directly across the diameter of the ring would be useful occasionally.

Also I had some trouble getting my head around the controls as the Right arrow key seemed to move me left around the ring. I'm sure that to some people the current configuration makes sense (a little bit like inverted aim in FPS), but I think it would be cool if you had the option to invert L and R.

Nice work though. It's a tidy project.

Yea that confuses the hell out of me too. I can't quite figure a better way to handle the controls. An option to invert them sounds nice - maybe a 'hot' key during gameplay?

Maybe.... sounds crazy and totally messes with what you've got so far, but what about if the ship stayed still at the bottom of the screen pointing upwards, and everything else rotated? Then the left and right would make sense

Yeah, I tried that that but then the enemy ships rotation didn't look right. Since the rotation (of the enemies and player) is one of the key unique features that I feel sets this game apart I decided to drop that idea and stick with my original.

I did add the option to reverse the Left/Right keys as you suggested - just press the space bar.

Also, added powerups:

1000 and 500 point bunuses
add 100 to shield
1up bonus
"double ship rapid fire" - I don't know what else to call it

And a teleporter. Hit it and you will teleport to the opposite side of the arena. This seems to be more of a hinderence though. Everytime I hit the teleport it seems to put me right in front of an asteroid and I get nailed.

Also added some additional animations for the powerups:
