Released! Fantastically versatile, this shader does cinematic filmgrain effects, and also color correction effects. You'll need Dark Shader for this one, I've exposed all kinds of values as sliders for editing.

Tutorial here, watch in HD if possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zJ1uDFNtJ8

I walk you through examples of such effects as:

-classic horror/film noir effect
-old western
-8mm wartime footage
-bleach bypass (like in the movie Se7en)
-post production "gel" effects (CSI:Miami, Saving Private Ryan, Lord of the Rings)

Requires a ps2.0 graphics card. Backup your original "post-bloom.fx" first. Download attached. Released under Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

Looks sweet, can't wait to see the sepia ones

Do you think you might do some camera gel-like shaders?

Sort of a post-production effect like in a movie or TV show where they make everything sort of blue (or any number of colors) to solidify the color palette. They do it a lot in Lord of the Rings or shows like CSI. More extreme examples would be movies like "Traffic" or "Belly".

EDIT: Errant, that is almost EXACLY what this shader does.

I have four different sepia tones you can add or mix with color in any amount. One of my favorite is washing out the color and adding a slight blue tone shift. It makes it look like old WW2 footage - great for setting the mood.

I'm proud of this one. I'm surprised how much atmosphere it adds when playing a game, even at subtle settings. Almost makes you forget it's a game.

Plus, it makes everything look more integrated. Especially when you have models from different artists with different styles. It homogenizes the color, disguises hard, low poly models, and even disguises bad texturing.

Awesome! Really like it I remember in Peter Jackson's King Kong, there you could unlock a mode to play like on old film. Like black and white and sepia.

Very cool! I'll bet Conjured can use this for his "Night of the Living Dead" game.

Yep it would be tailored made for his game.

As Errant alluded to, it can be used to give a post-production like effect to your game. So it can be used to give your game a "Saving Private Ryan" feel, or maybe a classic Hitchcock movie, or even a old-timey western.

There's lots of settings to tweak, and I'll go through each one when I release it officially.

So you can use your own fullscreen shaders in 1.17. And i love that. You could create penumbra effect with it. Nice.

Look. Flying saucer.

WOW! That looks amazing. And it will be free for all of us to use to boot? That is awesome! Thanks Bond1.

I dream of getting as good as you are someday bro. But I'm working at it. You, and Errent AI have been my inspiration since I came here. Thanks again.

Looks nice in action. Any chance of a preview of it with the gel effect? I'd really like to see what else this thing can do.

This effect could be turnable via triggerzone? Surely not but we can build different level with different effect. Sweet and thanx

I'll try and upload a few more videos with some different settings. The first example uses a heavy amount of film grain - but I find just using a subtle amount that's barely there really makes things more cinematic looking and less "computer perfect".

Don't count that out yet. A little-known feature of 1.17 is scriptable shader parameters. But I believe it's limited to object shaders. If I beg and plead with Lee perhaps he'll extend it to fullscreen shaders as well.

I

WANT

THAT!!!!!!!

Do you know if it's integrated with weapon HUD shaders too? If so then when this is integrated with PB all my dreams would come true.

Scriptable full screen shaders would rock, we could use them to indicate player health or wolverine style heat vision etc

Or you can give a "flashback" feel to your game.
This is going to be great Bond.

..you mean Cyclopes?

I'd love to see scriptable full screen shaders. Then you could really get creative. Say do a Tim Burton ala Wizard of Oz transition. Your in a grainy dull world, then you step through a door into a land of vibrant colors.

How will defining the parameters work as of now? If you already said, then I must have missed it.

I'll have to do some digging through some old emails...I've yet to use it yet, it's pretty much an undocumented feature that was added solely at my pleading for my own evil doings on a future model pack after 1.17 is released - I'm not even totally sure it's integrated into the source fully yet...

Now however you may not want it to...As if it is I will be constantly pestering you for help.

I have a project in mind that would require shader editing for weapon HUD models. I've already gotten some headway on scripting and media creation, but I've decided to back-burn it until I can properly screw with shaders.

As requested, attached is a new video, showing another cinematic "gel" type effect.

I call this preset "Saving Private Ryan". It has blue-green color correction with washed out colors, moderate filmgrain (notice the subtle scanlines), and a "bleach bypass" effect that gives enhanced contrast with deeper blacks. Great for a gloomy WW2 shooter!

Sorry for the largish download, but standard video compression will totally smear the effect!

Check out the video from a few post above and see for yourself! This preset gives almost the EXACT color correction as the movie Saving Private Ryan. Unlike the first video, there is less grain, a bit of scanlines for increased texture, and a bleach-bypass effect for enhanced tonality.

The new vid looks great! I think scriptable fullscreen shader effects are a must-have; so that the effect can be altered level-to-level or for indoor/outdoor transitioning, vision effects, etc.

Do these effects play well with HUD weapons?

Yep, player HUD weapons are included in the effect! This is a fast single-pass effect too, as opposed to bloom which requires 7 pixel shader passes.

When Lee gets back on the 26th, I'll see if I can persuade him to make the post shaders more user-extendable. Rather than having to replace the bloom shader to drop in a user effect. To me, a shader like this makes more sense than an always-on depth of field shader...

I agree, being able to change them and/or alter values on the fly via scripting should be an eventual must-have to make the most of the system.

I have a question. i am using the metro shaders. does the fullscreen shader have any influence on the metro shaders??

I mean is it better to use only the fullscreen shaders??
or can i make a combination of both the shaders??

They work together just fine. Even works with the segment normal mapping shader that uses pixel shader 3.0

The fullscreen shader treats the entire screen as if it were a texture. Kind of like taking a screenshot, putting some neat Photoshop effects on it, then redisplaying it on top of everything. Except in real time. It doesn't act on the objects themselves. So object shaders and fullscreen shaders can coexist.

We cannot expect everything bond1 makes to be free lol
His stuff is of the highest quality built from scratch and never a bruteforce hacked together "it may or may not work right" approach.

Everything he makes is always worth 20x (and way more most times) more than we ever pay for it and hopefully the little monetary rewards he does receive helps to keep him motivated to make more wonderful stuff
