I have decided to make "how to" manuals in my free time or during period or writers block. Here is part 1, it is a how to make your first game for the absolute beginner. I plan on expanding these into entity creation, building executable games, types of mapping and effects and all other aspects of the game making process. My hope is to compile an entire book for new users to start reading the first time they start the FPSC software and walk them step by step through the process of creating a completely custom game. Hopefully this will help some people feel less overwhelmed and more like they are having fun with game creation. If anyone finds any bugs or a step or two I forgot, feel free to let me know and I will get it fixed as quickly as possible. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Please note, I am not an English major, I am sure there are typo's and grammatical error's. You may also let me know about those and I can get them fixed.

Edit: I do not think I am allowed to upload the fpm here because that would be uploading TGC products. But I can offer assistance via email if someone is having trouble with the How-To.

EDIT - Tutorial 2 added making an entity in google sketchup and bringing it into FPCS. See below

Wow dude I wish there was a guide like that back when I started four or so years ago. Took me ages to learn anything. Im glad your doing this. It'll help people become good faster and get me better games to play for FPSC.

P.S: I don't think you can open an fpm unless you own fps creator anyway, and if you open an fpm file that you don't have the models in they don't appear in game anyways.

You can upload a .fpm file as it is simply the map. It doesn't include any of the TGC media in the file. As long as you use only stock media then anybody will be able to open it without error.

Okay, sorry for the delay. Here is simply the level1.fpm. Place it in your map bank and you will be able to see the final product of the above tutorial. If anyone finds a problem, please do not hesitate to inform me.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm currently working on the next one where I show how to create custom content and get it FPSC ready.

Here is another tutorial for beginners. This will take you through the process of using Google Sketchup to make a small crate and texture it and then bring it into FPSC. Good luck to all. And please feel free to let me know if I missed something or need to adjust anything.

Awesome.
In your google sketchup tutorial you end by showing your run-down market place.

How did you texture that as you state that for more than 1 image you need to make the model dynamic, so is the market place dynamic or did you create 1 giant image to texture it with.

The marketplace is still dynamic with multiple textures. I need to finish picking the textures before I can combine them into 1 larger image. But unfortunately I will most likely never finish it because once I imported it I realized I did not like the way it looked "flat faced" so I started over and am making all the windows and doors and trim pieces recessed and jutting out for more realism. Like I stated in the TUT, it was very low poly, so I am not worried about it even if I double it.

I have a problem. At the top of sketchup, i don't have a plugins option so i can't export the models the way we need to.

btw, what i mean by not having the option is, there is no button labeled "plugins" next to the window and help button.

how do i fix this??

Thanks!!

What version of sketchup are you using? Also do you have the plugin installed and in the correct folder? The attached image is of my plugins folder for sketchup version 8. The direct x exporter is the xExporter.rb

I'm using version 8 as well but i don't have any of the 3dxsketchup files. It gave me only 1 file labeled

3DRadExporter.rbs. I cannot open this file either.

The entities need to be dynamic if you are using more than 1 texture files. also FPSC will be looking for either tga or dds image formats. If you are still having trouble zip up your sketchup file and send it to my email (max 10 mb files) and I'll check it out for you.

I got everything working fine but i have a new problem with textures

Why won't the directx exporter export colors? It exports the materials just fine but it wont export the colors with the .x file. Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks

.x files can't hold pure colour materials, you should paint a 8x8 pixel big bitmap and apply it to the material.

That was goal. I remember when I started (because it was not that long ago) It was frustrating and challenging. If I had not found this forum I probably would have given up. I think in this day and age people want that instant satisfaction. So the faster a kid might get to make a game the more likely they are to stick with it. After they get that instant satisfaction, they can move on to scripting and the more complex higher function of game programing, but you gotta start somewhere.
