I think the title says it all! However i have changed the rules in such a way that you should ignore the GIMP part of the title--as long as you made the desktop background some how or another(not gotten from the Internet) and it is abstract, it is a valid contest entry!

If you want to know what i mean by 'abstract' then look up 'abstract desktop background' on Google Images and you will see what i mean.

You can make the image with whatever program you like, or even with code that you programmed your self, whatever really!

The rules are:
-MUST be made by YOU
-It can't be gotten from the Internet (cheating!!)
-Nothing inappropriate
-Nothing that would get this thread locked
-Have fun!

The winner's prize is the most awesome prize ever---BRAGGING RIGHTS!!

Now to be honest with you, i really dont know if i will decide on a winner, i might make the deadline in one month though, and after the one month period, i will decide the winner. But i still need to decide if i will actually do this and one i have decided, i will report back here with my decision

Let's see what I can come up with. Current time, 11:25pm.

Ehhh, ok 2 hours. Probably one more than I expected to spend on this but here's what I came up with.

Space Jellyfish, not sure if it's "abstract" enough. Click for 1920x1200 hi-res version.

Abstract 1. Click for 1280x720 hi-res version.

Nice, Phaelax.

Here's mine. My first abstract selfmade image. Didn't turn out that bad, I think.

Cheers

@Phaelax Yes, that is most definitely abstract enough! Those are both absolutely awesome!

@The Slayer Yours is pretty awesome too! It reminds me of snowflakes looked at under a microscope, probably because of the high contrast!

Which program did you guys each make these in??

Can I use Paint.net? It's probably less powerful than both PS and GIMP.

Quote: "and you cant find it offline"

I had to read this for a minute before I finally understood that you meant "you can't find it online".

EDIT: assuming Paint.net is ok, here's my abstract art that actually looks more like a tray of chocolates (it's also incredibly easy to make, but it looked cool...):

I guess paint.net is ok too--in fact, ill get to editing this into the first post in a little bit but just pretend i never specified what program it had to be, just an abstract desktop background you made, not that you found online.

It is cool, the first thing it reminded me of is vacuum forming plastic while it's being heated up before the vacuum is applied...

Is DBC allowed?
This was made with no drawing or editing at all! It's purely generated by code!
It wasn't what I was trying to do but a happy accident.

@Obese That is one awesome accident, considering it as my desktop background! What were you trying to do with the code that did that??

@Stormwire Lol i didnt see the view button at first so i didnt see it for a few minutes but that's really quite awesome, probably the first one here actually made in GIMP!! haha thanks!

Very very very nice, Gencheff! Great artistic and professional skills you have there!

Thanks, Dark basic dude79.
Actually, when I made this, I was thinking of something more spacial oriented, like for instance the big bang or something like that.

Heart-shaped chocolate boxes?

I messed around some more and made it for 4:3 aspect ratio (1024x768)
+ some color variations which look nice in my eyes.

extra colors :

I've attached another archive to the post with all variations and colors inside.

Here's my piece.

I'd like to add that this is my VERY first image made in photoshop. I was following some tuts online about how to use a pen tool (because I honestly thought it was a pen at first.... and it obviously isn't, lol) and this is what came out after a few hours. It's really..... bloomy, I think, which I should probably cut back on if I make another one

I'll attach since I don't wanna stretch the thread by putting the image in the post.

Here's some other abstract-like stuff I've done over the years, much of it is between 7-15 years old.

Here's one I made a few months ago for my Quixle game:
http://zimnox.com/temp/bubblycolors.jpg

Desktop wallpaper I made for myself last year (i think).
http://zimnox.com/temp/web_design/images/art/zimnoxwallpaper.jpg

This was from back in Highschool.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/phaelax/2d_artwork/cca_alien.jpg

Another old old picture I did, probably some 15 years ago, but I still find myself using this tileable abstract texture.
http://zimnox.com/temp/cool.jpg

Gold texture made in PS.
http://zimnox.com/temp/gold.jpg

More old stuff, was never quite sure what it was. It was partially rendered in studio max 3, the pipes in PS.
http://zimnox.com/temp/organix.jpg

The hand model was from Poser, but texture and background done in PS. (textures were actually created from "cool.jpg" above)
http://zimnox.com/temp/hand2.jpg

I always liked this, but I have no clue what I could use it for.
http://zimnox.com/temp/ghost_blood.jpg

Meh, whatever.

Here's one I call Colored Tiles. I uploaded it the other night but forgot to post it here.

I'm gonna make some newer, fancier ones once I get my desk setup...this was created with my touchpad.

Also, what format are you guys saving in? For some reason I'm getting weird compression artifacts in some images when saving as a PNG. Should I try BMP?

EDIT: Heh, forgot to post the link...updated.

The screen-like appearance makes me think it's a screenshot mid-transition to a logo. Interesting.

Took me a minute to see what you meant, but I can see that. The squares look like a transition, yes?

This is the original image I made it with. I spent time in GIMP drawing the neon lines and warping them, then blurred some and re-colored them to give them a sense of highlightedness, and then finally decided to see what would happen when I imported it into Paint.Net to apply the tile filter.

Yours.... I dunno, am I the only one that sees a stick figure flipping everyone off? It's the pink in the center that looks like that Lol! Cool, nonetheless... I'll have to play around with that tile filter too now

And about that awesome screen effect, it was achieved with the 'Erase Every Other Row' thingy under Filters > Distortions.
