Developer: Jonez Games

About:
PHOBIA 1.5 is a remake of an old test build of Phobia 3: Fear of the Unknown. I remade it to a full game, making it the second game in the series while still working on Fear of the Unknown.
I decided to name it Phobia 1.5 as I had already announced Fear of the Unknown as Phobia 2. Phobia: Fear of the Unknown will be the third game in the series.

PHOBIA 3: Fear of the Unknown WIP thread:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&b=25&t=208428&p=0

Phobia 1.5 has been updated to version 1.3

FIXED IN version 1.3 (1.2.2014):
-Made the possible first enemy encounter better.

-Fixed a bug where the script for the opening of ventilation hatch would get stuck sometimes.

-Made the ladder easier to climb in the laboratory.

-Added a hint for an easier escape from the laboratory.

-Slightly Lowered the volume of footstep sounds.

FIXED IN version 1.2 (27.1.2014):
-Fixed a bug where the mouse cursor didn't always show up in death screen. You can still use the "Y" and "N" keys to make your selection.

-Removed the ability for players to jump with the "Z" key.

FIXED IN version 1.1 (25.1.2014):
-Fixed a bug where some puzzle scripts didn't update with a first try.

-Corrected the button shown for Action in controls to "LMB" from "RMB"

-Fixed a bug where the enemy would freeze if the game is paused while it's attacking.
You can no longer pause the game while you are being chased.

-Fixed a bug where the enemy would jump and get stuck into ceiling when the game is paused during the enemy patrolling.

KNOWN ISSUES:
-The game might crash on a loading screen occasionally.
This fixes itself by reloading the level again.

-It is possible, though very rare to get stuck.
If this happens; use crouch to unstick.

-It's possible to fall through the map in some areas.
This will happen less likely if you don't rush around.

Story:
After taking a wrong turn; you get lost and eventually run out of gas. With no sign of life anywhere within miles; you are forced to take shelter in an abandoned mansion from the cold.
In your hunt for fuel; you discover that something terrible happened in the mansion decades ago, and that the place might not be as abandoned as you thought...

Well... I played it but sadly I cannot beat it. The cabinet puzzle is almost impossible for me to figure out. I checked all the notes and the two readables in that room but no progress. I loved the tense feel you get during the nighttime and basement scenes. I guess I'll have to try to figure it out later. Maybe I missed something?

Keep looking, there's a hint for the puzzle hidden in somewhere. You can also guess the combination, because there's only so many letters to use and I think you can only get one word out of them.

I am also stuck on the tool cabinet puzzle. I tried many combinations and even spelled out the word
raindrop
, but no success.

Other that that, the atmosphere and feel of the game is great! I really like it.

I give you a hint: the answer has something to do with the puzzle itself, and there's a correct answer for it written in somewhere.
@BSP
Thanks! Scratches was a huge inspiration for this.
@A dude
Thank you! Just keep looking. That's what this game is mostly about.

Just don't watch the walkthroughs if you don't want spoilers. The message was more like for straight up spoilers in posts/comments.

You can post reviews, thoughts and videos.

TodeGamer@
I think you misunderstood, you can keep the walkthrough here if you want.

This game is rather intense. I have yet to beat it but I believe I'm on the last level. I can't for the life of me figure out where to find the last part of the combination.

EDIT

I had mentioned before how even after getting most of the combination that the keypad would not work. This particular instance seems to be a bug. I went back and kept pressing the keypad until it let me use it. For good measure I clicked the previous puzzle item multiple times. I apologize for questioning your game design skills- it was just a bug I encountered that threw me off.

A short review will come eventually! Great GREAT GREAT experience! I jumped a whole lot harder than when playing Amnesia.

@Astech: I got stuck at the cabinet too, but then I went to bed...and just before I fell asleep I became a little paranoid.

Haven't tested it yet...I might be wrong.

You can. Just try again.
Edit: Yeah, the script doesn't always update with first time for some reason. Same thing with the fireplace. Just always double check if you think you got the puzzle done.
@Wolf
That's funny.

@Wolf-

I see what you did there. Unfortunately I beat the game before seeing your reply. I do have to say that some puzzles were a little more tedious than they should have been. The cabinet in-particular could have been done just slightly differently or perhaps something relevant and helpful should have lead up to it. This does give me good insight for future puzzles of mine however. Good trial and error with a dash of personal experience.

@Jonez-

I just finished the game. I edited my post above to reflect the findings.

Here's an explanation for the tool cabinet puzzle. DO NOT read this if you haven't completed the puzzle yourself, because it contains spoilers!
Why would someone bother installing a lock to a tool cabinet in a middle of nowhere in the first place? The guy was also too paranoid to write the password straight down, so he hid it in the note found in the toilet, which itself referred to both, at the puzzle and the password.

@TodeGamer
It would probably be the best to just add the first video of the walktrough here, and then a link to the playlist for the rest. Just to keep the thread clean.

@michael x
Thanks! How does one apply their game to be BOTB?

Also, I think that spoilery stuff in reviews and discussion could be allowed, as long as it's
hidden under the spoiler mark. (for those who don't know how to do it: [ spoiler ] your text here [ /spoiler ] just remove the spaces.)

I'm also setting up a page for the game on indiedb.com.
It should be up soon, if my suddenly extremely slow internet allows.
EDIT: Looks like someone has already added my game there; Phobia: The fear of the Darkness. Which I don't mind people sharing my freeware games, as long as they don't claim them as their own.

not sure myself but you would have to email KeithC about it.
the game was fun to play and it was short which is good in my book. I myself don't have too much time to be playing long games. KeithC really needs to see this game so he can give you the BOTB.so far this is one of the best horror games of 2014.

All right, I sent him a private message.

Quote: "...it was short which is good in my book."

A game like this doesn't need to be longer than it needs to be. It was originally shorter(see the EXTRA folder), but when remaking it, I also made the story more deeper and therefore more levels.

Quote: "so far this is one of the best horror games of 2014"

That doesn't really say much with the year just started. But I know what you mean.

it 's a great start being one of the first horror game release for 2014. I agree horror games should not be longer then they need to be.
this game is perfect the way you made it. I myself would not change about this version. but it was so crazy trying to run around in the house away from the monster and trying to figure out what I need to do next to get the code for the key pad. I felt like I was in a real house walking around in the dark. game like this should make people look at fpsc different in a good way. I just can't believe how much I really had playing this game.This is a well made game not just another fpsc made game.

I don't like how some of the scenes turned out, It's definitely not perfect. But in overall I'm happy about the game and also proud of it.

I feel as if though he was claiming it was his. I see no credit to you whatsoever. I would contact IndieDB directly and get them to convert the page to your ownership or delete it entirely; also it will look better for you overall.

Best luck with that and I can't wait to start seeing let's players do this one!

Mostly I play only very bad games with empty rooms, no real Story, no Intro - in short: with nothing but many bugs ^^

But this game was really good. I like the architecture and how you fill the rooms with objects. The atmosphere is fantastic and you hold your art design within the whole game. The music/sounds are suitable.
-
Even the Mainmenu looks great. The loadingtime is acceptable.
Only one thing I don't like. I had to find out by myself that I have to click LMB in the Intro. I find out that in the controls it says RMB for Action but it is LMB.

All right, the game is now on indiedb.com.
I still need to fix the loading page, which somehow ended up to a wrong place. http://www.indiedb.com/games/phobia-15

Quote: "I would contact IndieDB directly and get them to convert the page to your ownership or delete it entirely"

That's probably a good idea.

Quote: "I can't wait to start seeing let's players do this one!"

Same here! I really liked watching playthroughs of the first game, and this one should be a better experience for the players in so many ways.

Quote: "Mostly I play only very bad games with empty rooms, no real Story, no Intro - in short: with nothing but many bugs ^^"

Proves that the program is suitable for both; just quick fun and more serious game development.

Quote: "The music/sounds are suitable."

Here's a pretty good example of how much I changed some of the music and sound files from the original, just to make it feel right for the gamehttp://freesound.org/people/BOSS%20MUSIC/sounds/121797/
In where was this sound used in the game? This is the sound for when you get a new objective/thought.

Quote: "I find out that in the controls it says RMB for Action but it is LMB."

Wow, I didn't even notice. How on earth did I manage that? I hope this isn't too much of a problem.

Quote: "I beat the game!!!!! Finally!! It took me 3 days to complete it! Videos will be uploaded soon!"

Glad to hear it! I'll be watching them.

Phobia 1.5 has been updated to version 1.1.

FIXED IN version 1.1:
-Fixed a bug where some puzzle scripts didn't update with a first try.

-Corrected the button shown for Action in controls to "LMB" from "RMB"

-Fixed a bug where the enemy would freeze if the game is paused while it's attacking.
You can no longer pause the game while you are being chased.

-Fixed a bug where the enemy would jump and get stuck into ceiling when the game is paused during the enemy patrolling.

KNOWN ISSUES:
-The game might crash on a loading screen occasionally.This should fix it self by reloading the level again.

-Sometimes in death screen the mouse cursor might not show up. In this case use "Y" and "N" on your keyboard to make your selection.

-Apparently you can jump with the "Z" key. DO NOT use this! There's not supposed to be a jumping feature in the game for a reason.

Updated download links in the first post.

I played your game for a while yesterday and got to say that so far it's pretty dang creepy. The back round audio is well done.

For some reason i really enjoyed lighting the lanterns in the basement. Just got a real kick out of it for some reason.

Awesome job. Keep up the good work.

This is in fact worth a 9.5 out of 10 from me.

After bashing the first game; I'm glad he actually enjoyed this one, and it does help in getting the game noticed.

There's actually more videos of it coming than I can keep up with, and probably already more than the first game has had to this date.

I knew the game was worth releasing, but I still didn't really expect this much popularity for it. Because this isn't even the "big" game yet that I'm planning Fear of the Unkown to be.
