Hi all,

Does someone know if there is a Directx exporter available for gmax?
If so that would be perfect! gmax is a very good modelling tool

Thanks

YOU CANT EXPORT TO .X IT IS AGAINST THE LICENSE , YOU CAN ONLY USE GMAX TO MAKE MEDIA FOR YOUR FAVOURITE GAME TO PLAY YOUR SELF , EAVEN DISTRIBUTING THE .MD2 MODELS IS AGAINST THE LICENSE I THINK. ONLY REASON GMAX IS THERE IS SO THAT YOU CAN MODEL A CHARACTER , AND THEN PUT IT INTO YOUR FAVOURITE GAME , AND ALSO YOU CAN LEARN MAX FROM USING GMAX BECOSUE THEY ARE VERY SIMILIAR.

So , dont make a mesatake there .. imagen if you sell something with models made in gmax in it , and it becomes famous , and descreet descovers...you would have to carrye some really large fees , and maby eaven go to jail... so do NOT use it.

Ahm.. are you listening to me ? it IS unlegall , i contacted TURBOSQUID STAFF (witch offers the download to gmax) And got explained that it IS UNLEGALL , i also posted on TURBOSQUID FORUMS , and i got answer from a guy who Works in Descreet who confirmed that , so ... you can do whatever you please..right..true , but i dont suggest it...

I have been wondering for many years can i legally use the models , when i convert them , in my games... and i found the answer...

If you want something max-like and free , try ASTEC 3D MODELER (i think its called ASTEC) , it is similiar looking to max , it exports to .obj witch you can convert and uwv map (you can uv astec , but for some reason i dont know how.. i guess its becouse its in ALPHA stage>.) it to .x or .3ds or whatever you please.

That raises an interesting question.. and if one did make a model in gmax, exported to DX and sold it? How would the model softwares compant identify it as having been made from their software?

I mean,is a gmax .x diff from a 3ds Max .x, from anyother modeling software .x export?

Gmax actually writes a code into the .md2 format that is only one you can convert , and when that md2 format is converted , also the hiddenen signature STAYS in every each fomat it is passed to , i think it actually "curves" an order of polygons (unnoticable rate) , and they can indentify by checking the mesh i guess , and eaven if it would be tryangulated or something in another program , it still stays inside , that is what i heard from a guy , but im not sure if thats their protection , but im sure they have one.

like for example PHOTOSHOP writes a code into COLOURS.

Always wonderd about that. For all the freekin software piracey out there, how many game dev companys are using pirated model software and getting away with it.

And how much of the crap on Turbosquid is actually done in pirated software

i dont think thats true. if i export a model from gmax as x then import it to lithunwrap and export it again does its still retain this "code". im positive it doest make a difference.

Yes it is a breach of the lisence agreement.
There are people who have a work around to exporting from gmax, but it is so troublesome you're much better off using something else.

Dodic: The proper word would be "illegal".

stop, you guys are killing me with this illegal mubojumbo....

"Gmax actually writes a code into the .md2 format"

thats funny because the orignal converters were neither supported nor written by discreet, so I find this magic code very suspect...

anyway, I always get a kick out of these gmax issues because - well frankly because they are all unfounded and hersey.....

Put simply...

Discreet don't want you to use GMax for making games, Discreet want you to buy 3DS Max to make games.

GMax was designed to allow people to add their own media to games, the game should come with a gmax export script, but it's very rare to see Gmax supported outside of the Quake modding community.

For using Gmax with DBPro, forget it, it's illegal, regardless of how you look at it - there's no point in even discussing it.

Locking this Gmax thread, like we've locked so many Gmax threads before it.
