One of the more unique games to be released this year: Aviary Attorney. I'm super excited for this, it's said to have multiple branches per case with a gripping story and memorable characters.

To be released on 18th December.

So, the amount of power Unreal needs is rather ridiculous. It is a great engine, but way overkill for my game. It's the same conclusion I came to a few months ago, I only tried it again because they updated the engine and they did fix a bunch of stuff, but there's still no denying that Unreal is a memory hog!

Soo... AppGameKit has 3D animation commands now, so I could try building my own engine with it. I could create the basic level editor that would allow me to design the levels (no way! ), and use Blender to design the assets and animate them. The game will be mostly first-person so that would be relatively easy to code.

Yes, I think I shall attempt to make my own engine with AppGameKit! And that way I can more easily control what's going on in the background, and make it look even more like an N64-style game.

I've been making my own engine with C++ and OpenGL.

You should limit each texture to 4 KB.

Cool beans, fellow forumite! Wherefore dost thou create such an engine? For a particular game, or more general-purpose?

And yes, I shall make the textures quite small, though I don't think I can get away with 4KB

But hey, after messing around with some 3D stuffs in AppGameKit, I now know that it could be the solution I've been looking for this whole time! Once I create a couple of test projects we'll see how everything goes. I just have to learn how to use the animation commands because that's gonna be a super-duper important part of the game. I mean, who wants to play a game where things don't move?

Hey, it would still be better than those old terrible Action Max games.

I didn't know those were a thing! So rubbish! I mean, the game is identical every time and the only interactivity you get is a flashy light and a red LED number on the console itself!

Additionally, when I post edits, I get kicked to the forum home page, not back to the post I edited. Pfft! Better go put this in the bug thread.

You sound like you've run into the dilemma I was in a while ago. "Oh, what the devil do I program in?" trying all sorts of stuff, plus points and negative points all around and the wealth of choice. I have since settled on making C# the main language I code in and then try to fit around that. I am not sure that I can objectively encapsulate how great C# is...okay, that was a bad OOP joke, I'll admit, but then I am on classy indi...okay, I will stop, I am sure you could do with brea...nevermind. I'll return to my dark corner of the room. All right, one more, "gurl, I couldn't even OOP a body like that, because I don't believe in objectifying women."

But AppGameKit is perhaps worth it. You've got plenty of DB experience, whilst it is not the same, there are similarities enough for you to get started and rolling with the language. One of the reasons I didn't try out UDK myself is because I thought it'd be a weeeee bit overkill.

Not only is UDK/Unreal overkill, but it over-complicates a LOT of what should be really... BASIC

For example, in Blueprint/Kismet, flipping the value of a variable. In most languages, you can do this to flip a boolean:

val = !val

But in Blueprint, you're presented with a visual box that doesn't really let you do that, you can only either set it to true or false. Instead, you have to create tons of nodes with tons of wires to flip and re-flip values. Extremely frustrating!

I am having fun learning more of the 3D commands in AppGameKit already. I was having issues with framerate until I realized the new AMD Crimson software for some reason had AppGameKit set to run at only 30FPS, so once I set that to 60 it all worked flawlessly! The physics commands look insanely fun, and very easy to use.

First step for this engine will be to build the scene editor, in which I can import models I've made with Blender and also set up lights and such. Won't be super complicated at all

Oh man I am so excited!

@TheComet:

That's cool. That method of overlaying stock photos and blending them together is a very common method of creating initial concept art for games and movies.

If Unreal allows you to treat booleans as integers, you might be able to do val=1-val; to flip the bool.

I just worked four days in a row - not a big deal in and of itself - and two of them were my first ever graveyard shifts. That is, on Thursday I worked 7am - 3pm. Normal shift. Same for Friday. On Saturday, I left for work at 10pm. Yes, pm. Worked 11pm - 7am. Strangest thing ever. Very surreal experience, not sleeping through the night. Got home in the morning at around 8.30am (went to Maccas for breakfast), didn't feel tired but knew I'd be going to work again that night, so flopped into bed. Still didn't feel tired, but at some point went to sleep. Woke up at 6pm. I don't like graveyard shifts. Completely messes with your sense of time.

-----------------------------------

Also love FL Studio. Best DAW ever. Gonna post my latest completed song/thing since it's the first I'm pretty happy with. A few more tweaks to make first tho

So I finished tweaking that song 'til it was nearly perfect (still a bit muddy in some places, but I don't want to spend any more time on it), and uploaded it to SoundCloud. Here's the direct link in case I can't figure out how to make it display directly in the forum:

Haha just discovered Unreal has a "flip flop" function for Blueprints to make the flipping of values easy...

EDIT: BUT, just like EVERY OTHER FUNCTION in Blueprint, it is a pain to use. Which I discovered immediately after posting this and just didn't update until now.

Hey, guys, I bought Office 365 for $6.99/month today and I LOVE IT. 1TB of OneDrive space was also included. Now I can Excel at making a PowerPoint and have great Access to my Publisher who frequently only sends me OneNote with usually only a Word or two. What a terrible Outlook for publishing anything, eh?

Thank you, I'll be here after I get off work at 915 tonight

So I converted these battery-powered christmas lights to run from USB (using a resistor to limit the current since I don't have any dc-dc converters in the house) and after doing all this I find out the powerbank I want to use is one of those that turns off after a few second if the current draw is too low.

Two jobs is REALLY paying off!

My checking account currently has $170 in it. I only have to buy two more things for Christmas for people, which should cost less than $20. I also have a fair bit in my savings account now too!

So, hopefully with tax refunds, I can afford a car sometime around March of this next year. Whoopee!

EDIT: Well, I just bought Star Wars Battlefront for PC Deluxe Edition through Origin for only $49! You guys should go grab it now too!

Hooray, I can now say that I have gotten a car unstuck in the snow using cat poop powder (cat litter). I was parked in someone's driveway to take care of their kitties, but living in the mountains like I do, it was a steep driveway covered completely in snow. The car went nowhere while I span the tires, then the amazing powers of cat poop powder occurred to me. I put some of that under each tire, and the car backed right out no problem. Cat litter FTW!

Well, I can definitely see why some people are disappointed in the new Battlefront.

There's no campaign mode to speak of

But the battles are pretty cool... and I do like the waves of enemies, that's a pretty fun mode... but I do wish they had the "Instant Action" that BF2 had, and a proper campaign mode! It's like EA just decided that everybody would want the online multiplayer. But I liked playing BF2 for the story, as well...

How much do you want to bet that they will release a campaign mode as a paid add-on?

DLC will probably just be multiplayer maps. I believe they announced a sequel, hopefully that will have a campaign mode since that was one of the biggest complaints.

Rumor has it that the next one will indeed include a campaign mode.

I'm not gonna lie though, the multiplayer is astoundingly fun. That Drop Zone mode is ridiculous!

My team kept NOT claiming the pods, though, making it extremely difficult to win. I'm guessing a lot of new people were playing since the game went massively on sale because of The Force Awakens
