Edit 4: changing this post to something usefull....

if you got any problems installing your DBPro version on newer windows machines, here is how to use the open source binaries.
no need to install / update / activate an old version anymore.

How to download and use the open source binary:

1. go to https://github.com/LeeBamberTGC/Dark-Basic-Pro
2. there is a green button on the right. it says "clone or download". click that and then click "Download ZIP"
3. unpack zip file and open the unpacked folder.
4. copy the "install" folder anywhere you want.
5. rename the "install" folder to "Dark Basic Pro"
6. open the folder and start "launch".
7. in the editor window, open "Tools"->"Options" and change the "Compiler Filename" option so it points to the compiler inside of the new "Dark Basic Pro\Compiler" folder.
8. click ok and you are done.

if needed i can make a video.

the open source compiler has some issues if you have coding errors. sometimes it shows no errors where it should show errors... weird. on my pc i can't get the DBPro 9Ex version to work with the open source version.

3. unpack zip file and open the unpacked folder.
4. open the "Compiler" folder
5. copy the "certificates" folder to your "Dark Basic Professional\Compiler" folder.

Works perfect, better then how I had it installed through the binary folder.. Lots of bugs.

"5. copy the "certificates" folder to the "Compiler" folder of your DBPro folder."

// I guessed at what you meant so you only get 3 points out of 4 haha
5. copy the "certificates" folder to the "Dark Basic Professional\Compiler" folder."

I also ran the "DBProUpdate-U77.exe" https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/180294

Thank you sir, much appreciated.

I followed your instructions "How to download and use the open source binary". When I clicked on "Launch" I got an error: "not a valid Win32 application". What do I do now? I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3.

@Brazos

that never happened to me, but i don't use windows xp anymore.
you can try "How to "activate" an already installed DBPro version" in the second post, if you still have access to a purchased version of dark basic pro.
if that doesn't help, i can try to upload my dark basic pro folder, i copied it from my old windows xp install and didn't update it since, so that should work.

do you use any paid plugins?

I do not have not have access to a purchased version. I do not use any paid plugins. If you could upload your dark basic pro folder I would certainly give that a try.

Dark basic pro is open source and the games creators do not sell it anymore so it shouldn't be a problem for me to post my purcased version directly to the forum, right? i swaped my certificate files with the ones from the open source version

i use Update 7.6, you may try to apply the 7.7 Update after download.
there are some plugins already installed:

licensed:
Dark Physics

free:
Advanced 2D
Advanced Sprites
A* pathfinding
Sparkys Collision
Image kit
Matrix1
Win Skin

if you need instructions to how to use the plugins, or need other plugins, check out http://dbcc.zimnox.com/?page=resources. that's where i got them from.

how to use:

1. download Dark Basic Pro https://mega.nz/#!ZLQxRQ5D!q2tNlq_xVtzB4I_FLA8_AR5USeTEsuiS6SjDC_zEiiI
2. extract the "Dark Basic Pro" folder in "C:\tools".
3. run Launch.exe

if you want it to change the install path, then you need to change 2 things:
1. the "Launch.CFG" at line 4, change the option "FullPath" to any path you want. make sure to use quotation marks.
2. and the "Editor\Synergy Editor.cfg" at line 50, change the option "DBPLocation" to the same path as in 1. note that here, do not use quotation marks and make sure there is a "\" sign at the end of the path.

anything i missed?
