I Bought a Dvd RW drive for my dell because all it had was a crappy one, But when I booted up the computer I get a could not locate drive error. I change it in the Bios and it still does the same thing. Then when I open up My computer my second hard drive wont show up. And Dell wants to charge me a crazy 130 to make things work. Anybody know whats going on I think It has something to do with the slave and master drives.
Thanks

I think you're right about the slave and master issue.

On the back of the drives you should see 6 or so pins. On the top of the unit or in the instruction manual you should be able to find a little diagram giving jumper positions for certain setups. If they're all on the same cable, you'll need to set one drive to Master, the other to Slave and it should work. You can also use the Cable Select position, though setting Master and Slave individually is the commonly preferred option.

I'd have to assume it's the ATA hard drive that stopped being recognised - only a power issue or a loose cable whilst installing the drive would cause the SATA one to stop being recognised.

Jumpers shouldn't make a difference if they're on seperate cables, it only applies if the two drives are on the same IDE cable but make sure that if they are on the same cable, there aren't two drives set to master, or two drives set to slave.

I'd revert any changes you've made in the BIOS, just to make sure that didn't confuse the situtation even more.

Nem,
Actually, the cable itself has 'master' and 'slave' plugs. I'm not 100% on which is which, but I know that if you have the drive set to 'master' and plugged into the 'slave' cable slot, it wont work.
That's what gives the 'Cable select' option the ability to determine which is master and which is slave.

I'm pretty certain that your Mobo info booklet should tell you (if you even got one from Dell), if not, google is your friend.

Oh, and if your SATA drive is not working and it's on a different cable, then it's got nothing to do with you installing a new drive unless you changed something to do with the SATA drive/cable.

Jess T, As far as I know it depends on the type of cable. I've never noticed a difference, everything's worked first time for me when I've set one as master and one as slave.
I know the older type are really fussy about Cable Select but eitherway, it won't work if you've got two masters or two slaves!

Another thing about dells, some are tagged for certain cd drives. Leave the old one in and just add a new one and see if it helps. Another note is that on some models the restore cd will only run from a dell cd drive. You may have to buy one from dell if your old one goes out and this is the case. We found this out the hard way after trashing the old drive.

This is correct from my experiance, though only for some hardware. It will work with some cables. Though on these cables, the cable select option won't work (I belive there is no red [pin 1] mark on these type cables). In any case you can always set the jumpers for master/ slave on the drives and put the master at the very end plug and the slave on the middle plug. This should work with both cable types I believe.

you said your dell had a 'crappy' one

why was it crappy exactly?

as far as i know, all new Dell desktops come with 16x DVD-RW drives as standard

yep, jumpers on your drives might be wrong and the drive cable for your machine might have an order, like the last plug is master etc..

There might even be a Master/Slave switch on your Hard drive.

They should only fit into what they were designed to fit into, unless you got some super generic piece of crap mobo.
