Hi all,

Well, funny enough there have just been posted about C&C 3.. But still. I guess it's just RTS evening here on TGC.

Some days ago I bumped into a new RTS game that has just hit the streets here in Denmark(and other places too, of course. But some countries don't get it before the 20th February). Anyway, it's called Supreme Commander. It's a new version of the old RTS game called "Total Annihilation". I hadn't even heard of that before Supreme Commander

So I downloaded the demo that's available around the internet, and I was just amazed. Today, I ordered a copy of the game, and should hopefully have it by Thuesday

I was simply stunned by everything this little demo had to offer. From the economic system, to the truly massive wars that can take place. Massive, and by massive, I really mean massive explosion This is a screenshot of me nuking my enemy:

yay

The economic system is build up around Energy and Mass. No money invloved. You get energy by building power generators, and mass by building Mass extractors. And then it's all about keeping it all running. Say you have 500/500 energy, and a building requires 100 energy, it won't get taken from your total energy storage. See, power generators don't give more storage, it simply just gives you more power to use of. So if you have a energy income of 100+, and you create this new building that requires 100 energy, suddenly, you will have 0+ income of energy. If you now create another building that requires energy, you will get a decrease in your energy storage, and suddenly you will have no enery at all, making progress of buildings and units a lot slower. Same for mass. So it's about evolving your base so energy and mass can keep up with it.

On my screenshot above you have a total overview of the map(with my explosion!). Another cool feature in this game is that you can scroll between the fully 3D battle, to outer space, where you get a total overview over the whole map. This is a smooth process. Truly awesome.

Also, some buildings and units take time to create. I used around 70 minutes creating my nuclear launcher forexample(yes you read that right). That gives you a basic idea I guess. Of course you can "turbo charge" the process of the buildings by settings more engineers to build on it.

After huge battles, you will see wreckages spread all over the place, huge craters from atillery, and smoke comming up from everywhere. All the wrechages won't dissapear before you or the enemy decides to remove them manually So battles leave their marks.

I've always missed that massive explosions and wars in RTS games, together with big evil units. Now I will finally get it!

You can use endless of different strategies. And there's units for both land, water and the air.

You can read more about the game, and see more screenshots of it here:
http://www.supremecommander.com

Also, you can see some very cool gameplay movies of the game here:http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2765

Normally, I wouldn't make a post like this. But this game is really awesome.

I can't believe I didn't discover this before, as it has been around for a long time. On the other side, it was good that I first discovered it now, so I could order it right away hehe.

Cheers.

I played the beta briefly and didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I loved total anhilation though, it was an excellent rts in it's day. Maybe I haven't played SC enough but I think I will save my money for C&C3.

Yeah, if you want to have it to run on high settings it will require some work done by your PC. The game takes advantages of Dual-Core luckily. So even if I have over 200 units patrolling at the same time, they will still respond quickly Although I've read on the forum that on some peoples machines, it's pretty random what units that response quick. And this is on machines with 8800GTX graphic cards and dual-core processers. So maybe you're just more lucky in one skirmish game that you will be in another.

I've seen it. I want it. I probably won't have it though(it would kill my PC!). I haven't seen an RTS with battles of that scale ever.

I take it you have never seen any of the Total War games? In Rome Total War you'll have battles with 30k units (according to a friend of mine). I haven't played the games myself, but from the videos it seems possible to have several thousand units in a battle.

I'm downloading the Supreme Commander Demo now, it might be pretty interesting.

yeah, i've played shogun total war, and you can have 3k or so soldier armies on both sides (so about 6k in a battle). That was a really good game

it takes into account all kinds of stuff like your troops getting tired, running away... etc

One man, one lawnmower, plenty of angry groundhogs.

Hehe, I've had the game for a couple of days now I'm really enjoying it. I've tried it online too, unfortunately I got owned in every game I played hehe, so now I'm just playing Skirmish and trying to learn the game a bit more

This is how one of my games went online:

My opponent are the read... as you can see it didn't go very well(The red dots represent his units)
The last thing he wrote in the chat before the attack was "The time has come". Awwww.

It's a really great game!

Yeah, after seeing only screenshots like that, I wasn't too impressed with the graphics either, but when you scroll down it is actually very detailed. I've been having a look at Company of Heroes, one of the very big games last year, and I have to say; the graphics are really stunning(even compared to Supreme Commander), and the gameplay feels different from other RTS's I've played. That's a really impressive game, and you should check it out if you haven't already.

Those things are mentally hard to kill - although i found that getting behind them makes it easier. If you can get something you dont care about in front of it as "fodder" then use your strongest units to flank it and take it out.

Last night... well technically this morning... i was playing at the LAN. My two coop friends got taken out and there was me left vs 3 Challenging AI's. I had 2 of those things in your screenshot on their way to my base + 3 flying saucer things. Its nuts!

Yeah, I love my Colossus! (The big tech 4 robot). I had it take out all of my opponents base all by itself. It has 240.000 energy No wonder it's so hard to kill, hehe. I like the flying fortress too, although it's quite easy to kill actually. It can't really take that much damage. But it works great as a kamikazee unit hehe, it can take out a couple of buildings when it crashes.
