Well the subject kinda says it all

In another recent forum post I explained about how I jacked in my Wii and bought a 360 and love it. I downloaded the Crackdown demo, tried it once and then sort of wrote it off, it just didn't work for me at the time (basically I didn't play it enough / properly).

I then read a review of it in Edge, where they rate it 8/10 (very high for Edge!) which made me think that I just didn't play it right the first time around, so hit the demo again - and WOW! What a stunningly fun game

I have since played it for hours (literally 15 different complete sessions of the demo, including several Live games) because it is just SO fun - the whole sandbox gone a bit insane, with massive building leaping, explosives, driving, weapons, throwing cars around, etc. Ahh it's just gaming bliss

I think that in the full game (which we pre-ordered today) the combat will get a bit repetitive, but seeking out those elusive green orbs, scaling the massive tower blocks and completing the rooftop races will make up for that.

I'm really looking forward to some Live co-op mayhem too.

Having seen me play it for so many hours my wife decided to try it last night (she always loved the GTA games) and once she had the controls sorted she really got into it. The whole 'do what you want' freedom element is really appealing.

Amusingly I was teaching her how to lock-on and throw grenades at the baddies while up on a rooftop. Somehow she managed to fling a grenade down which HIT a baddie on the head, the force of which knocked him to the ground out cold. The grenade then proceeded to roll away down some steps, exploding at the bottom and harming no-one. The unconscious baddie lay on the floor down to half health , so she shot him

You know a game is a real hit when you can do stuff like that in it!!

Cheers,

Rich

Reminds me of the time I threw a smoke grenade at someone in Battlefield 2 and it hit them on the head and killed them (they weren't best happy - it was a team mate). It's great when a game is so dynamic that you can do such things.

Just watched an IGN video review and it looks very cool, but unfortunately I don't have an XBOX360, so I don't think I'll be getting it . I'm not too fond of the character graphics though, looks a bit wierd, almost like a 2D-3D cross.

I wasn't very fond of the graphics at first, but they REALLY work well in play. It's like a 3D graphic novel - not cell-shaded, but not too far removed from that effect. It works really well when moving.

My 360 died on me last week and I'm waiting for it to be repaired. I was literally getting ready to go to EB to pre-order Crackdown when I discovered the red lights of death.

To top it off, you get to beta test Halo 3 when you buy Crackdown-- how cool is that?

On IGN weekly they get together in coop, build a massive pile of cars and stuff, then roll grenades under it.

Best explosions ever.

Have you guys been to the tallest building you can see? It takes some time to get to the top but when you do...ah its cool you can even see the ground below you its so high, like ten or fifteen seconds to fall to the ground lol. That guy is just like Spiderman, except a cop.

It all sounds like my cup of tea, but watching my son play the demo didn't make me want to play at all - and I loved San Andreas. Maybe I just need time to get into it. The co-op thing on xbox live will most likely sell it to me anyway, maybe I should give the demo a proper try.

We've been owning the Dead Rising demo recently, gonna buy that this weekend (even though it's old by now) - trying to reach that 500 zombie kill in 10 minutes is damn fun, you have to do some severe killing, and I just love the idea of surviving a zombie invasion in a mall, how long have I wished for a game like that.

I thought Crackdown was fun, and now doubt it's going to have more people buying it just for the Halo3 Beta; but tbh it's one of those games I felt like I could leave a few months before getting.

I've not been excited about many of the games comming out recently though. Think the whole GTA gaming aspect has been done to death recently; Crackdown has some interesting aspects to it, but it is essencially City of Hero's meets GTA and they jump in bed with the 5-0.

How the story was presented actually irritated me more that much else though tbh. The limitation on the demo was slightly annoying, I mean you're limited to the one city block (there's another 3, plus the police tower) and added to that you're limited to only a single gang with 3 kingpins then the boss.
So why the hell did they add a 30min limit once you've got 2-Star level in any attribute? There also doesn't seem much else to it past a few secret races, liberating supply points and doing the actual missions.

As far as "good guy" GTA variants go (as in you play cops rather than some thug) I'd have to say that TheGetaway has always been damn good. I'm definately looking forward to the next installment, just a shame it's a Sony in-house game

Anyone played the GRAW2 demo? If so, am I the only one who after playing Rainbow Six Vegas feel like the controls are a leap backwards? GRAW was quite fresh and new when it was released, but the new one only seems to try and complicate the game too much.
While I do like doing weapon load-outs and giving my team orders, etc. I think there's a balance between gameplay complexity and fun that needs to remain. They seem to have broken that with GRAW2, could just be me though.. Just going to eagerly await the next Rainbow Six; can't wait to see what they do with it. Finally been playing it online the last day, and it's quite fun if you can find a decent server. Finally got to play Gears online as well yesterday, that was awesome; well cept until the host kicked me out for constantly sneaking up on mainly him, and chainsawing through them all.
Lots of fun running after people with the Hammer of Dawn too

I'm kinda looking forward to some decent platformers, or even better Final Fantasy style RPGs. Hopefully there's going to be some soon, been missing my RPGs since putting my PS2 back in it's box to make room for the current consoles.

He just meant that the draw distance is insanely good - and it is. Even from the top of the highest building (and that's hell of a way up) you can still make out cars driving on the roads waaaaaay down below.

My pre-order is in, and I want it for the game itself, I couldn't give two hoots about the Halo 3 MP beta

The GRAW2 demo was astoundingly crisp--- the HD graphics are better than anything I've seen on the system so far. However, I didn't play the first one so I found the controls really hard. There wasn't a popup style tutorial that I've come to expect from demos. Oh well.

Jeku - same here. It looked stunning, but was a bitch to actually play, and I was fragged within seconds even though I *didn't* charge in there, gunning like Rambo, and tried to follow every meagre prompt they gave. Shame really, but as I have Gears, Lost Planet and in 2 days time Crackdown to finish, it's no big deal.

BTW is it just me or are the Achievements for Bejewelled 2 *insanely* hard? For example you need to reach level 280 on 'endless' mode.. I mean hell.. that's like solid playing for 12 days or something insane. Or achieving 10,000 power cubes, or 1000 hyper cubes. They are just nuts. I love the game, and have played it more than any other on my 360, dedicating hours and hours to it, but I've yet to get a single achievement. Bastards

I know! That was one of the first Arcade games I purchased, and I have yet to get even a single achievement. Even the Zuma ones are a tad easier--- managed to get at least 2 that I know of. But yes, the Bejewelled 2 ones are crazy insane. Even the one you get when hitting level 8 (or is it level 10?)--- so hard to do.

I played the crackdown demo and thought it was class, I have my reservations about buying it though because it seems like it may have a short lifespan and at £50 a game I only invest in games which I'll keep playing.

£50?! Where do you buy your games? I paid £39.97 for my pre-order with guaranteed delivery on the day of release (which is 2 days time.. woohoo)

I agree it's still a lot of money though, and I know what you mean about the demo - I did feel that everything you got to do would be pretty much 'it', but the fact you'll get the rest of the city to explore, the full set of skill upgrades (cars with guns, ahh yeah!) and just the general freedom to roam was enough for me.

Crackdown is released on Friday here in Denmark, but apparently they sent it today(pre-ordered yesterday).

Quote: "it seems like it may have a short lifespan"

Yeah, I think the main storyline will take you about 8-10 hours to complete(I think I read/saw that in a review somewhere), but in free roaming games you can usually spend a lot of time just exploring the city. It's fun to drive around in games like GTA and Saint's Row and the likes, but the whole 'superhero' aspect is very appealing too IMO. Jumping around on rooftops and throwing cars around is fun, and I'm sure I can spend a lot of time doing just that. Also, the achievements in the game seem to be pretty fun to unlock as well(if you're into that).

They sent mine yesterday, but unfortunately(kinda, it also means 'No school', so...) it's been snowing a lot, so all public traffic has come to a halt, and they advise only to go outside if it's vital... :/
