finalcut pro is awsome, i got to use it in uni, no more though..

a good free editor is Avid Free AV, takes a little time to learn, but the program is pretty powerful, it came with one of the issues of Computer Arts magazine last year. I think their site still has teh tutorial to use it.

virtual dub and avid free are the cheapest solutions. (freeware)

final cut pro and avid full are industry standard for most high end post production.
Adobes premiere used to be great in the 90's but is not as crisp as it used to be.

Having used all mentioned above for years and having purchased and owned FCP 3/4/5 i think its leaps and bounds over AVID, however AVID is used still today in a lot of tv stations, its special effects MOJO package is another $3000 which are features common to FCP out of the box.

imovie and fcp express are lower mac packages, but if your windows editing virtual dub or avid free will suffice for simple editing.

If you're on a budget, Magix Movie Edit Pro is a pretty nice and powerful tool for the price.

I have vague plans for World Domination

I never cared much for Pinicle Studios myself. My friend at pbs uses final cut pro for everything.

I recreated the Amarillo video with my own greenscreen using this software. Don't pay the price on the site. Ring them up and say you have seen it cheaper in subscriber emails.

right so I tried Avid free Dv and its okay, I looked at Final Cut Pro, couldn't find a trial, and it looks awesoem but I don't have that kind of money I also looked at the one Batvink suggested and am currently trying Jahshaka but I just have a quick question. While all the programs look good, I hvae a question, lets sya I have a video of myslef doing something on a black background, is it possible with any of these programs to replace the black colour with an image of my choice? because I am havign trouble figuring this out by looking at the overview and tutorials, or is this kind of edit impossible?

there is a cut down version of final cut pro and it now supports HD quality
http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/

however once again if your on a budget try t@b Zs4 video Editor, it appears to have chroma keying which is what your looking for.

I believe the soft I suggested you, Movie Edit Pro, has that (the technique is called "blue screen", although people nowadays normally use green as the stencil colour).

any colour can be used in chroma keying.
george lucas used green for background and blue for foreground to achieve dual chroma scenes.

If I was to make a 3d video, what studio would you suggest?

I would like one with options for high (even HD) resolution and no poly limits and for an affordable price.

Truespace 7 might be good at it, but a bit too expensive.

any other? (it should be able to import several 3d formats and export the most usual formats)

blender being the cheapest solution will allow you to render a 3d scene in hd resolution.

I use maya and FCP because the file formats allow me to insert video into a 3d scene via a z dimension etc..
