Did anybody bother to watch them? I did. The Departed got best film of the year and it deserved it. Helen Mirren won best actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth, and after seeing the movie she definatly deserved it. One thing that pissed me off was that Pan's Labyrinth didn't win more awards.

Oh, and am I the only one who thinks Babel is crap?

Also disappointed in Happy Feet beating out Monster House and Cars which were much better than the former.

Ellen Degeneres was absolutely hilarious during that. I was also happy to see that Melissa Etheridge won best original song. I thought it was pretty cool that an Inconvenient Truth won some awards. You're right about Pan's Labyrinth, it definitely deserved more. I was happy to see that Little Miss Sunshine won an award as well, it was by far one of my favorite movies this year. Al Gores little, "I plan to run for..." *cuts to get off the stage music* was a little corny, but I laughed.

Yeah I was expecting that though, it just seemed like the perfect time for a stunt like that.

I'd have to say I was dissapointed that Mark Whalberg didn't win best supporting actor for his role in the Departed, but the man from Little Miss Sunshine was great in his film as well.

Pan's Labyrinth was quite good, but because it was subtitled you wouldn't believe how many people ignore the movie just because of that. The Departed was good also. Though I could think of a dozen movies I think are better, the award is for best of "the year" and we all know there's been slim pickings the past few years. As for Ellen Degeneres, I absolutely can't stand her.

Spirited Away should've been nominated and should've won Best Picture of the Year back in '02.

And I agree totally about The Departed, it's a great film but there is still so many better films out there to pick from - they just didn't come out this year.

I'm glad we're seeing some 'change' in the Oscars though. Little Miss Sunshine being nominated for Best Picture of the Year? I didn't see that one coming (all though it was a very good film comedies tend to get the shaft in the Oscar race). Hell, Borat being up for best adaptation as well.

Speaking of movies, anyone hyped for Zodiac (was a big fan of Se7en and Fight Club) and 300?

Never saw little miss sunshine, but it was Amazon's #1 sale item for awhile.

I remember the name Zodiac but I don't recall what it was about. But if its by david fincher then it just might be worth looking at.

Ok I had a few beefs with the Oscars this year.

- Melissa Etheridge's song is just *awful*. Maybe I just can't stand her husky voice, but I really like the song James Taylor sang from Cars.
- Best Supporting Actor--- well, I didn't think he deserved an Oscar for that role. I was also surprised the pedophile character from Little Children was nominated. For that award I would have liked to see Marky Mark win, as he was great in The Departed.
- Helen Mirren --- without a doubt deserved this award. Kudos to her for pulling off a role like that.
- I actually enjoyed Babel quite a bit. The Japanese actress deserved Best Supporting Actress for her role as a deaf mute teen struggling with complex emotions. But the lady who won for Dream Girls was amazing as well, so it's really a toss up for me. The little girl from Little Miss Sunshine, which a good actress for that role, did *not* deserve to be nominated I feel.
- Best Director - Definitely Martin Scorcese deserved this one--- but, did he really? I mean, he's been nominated like 6 times without ever winning, but that shouldn't be the reason. Letters from Iwa Jima looked like a more complicated picture (admittedly I've never seen it), and Babel was amazingly directed as well. Oh well.
- Al Gore --- I hate when celebrities self-praise as much as the next guy, but to me he just looked so smarmy up there on the stage. I'm glad he didn't do his little announcement at the Oscars as it would have taken something away from the night IMHO.
- The length--- 3.5 hours. Why???

Yeah the Japanese girl (I think here name was Rukia something?) did very good in Babel but I still couldn't stand the movie. 3.5 hours was so they could incorporate some really unnecessary things, most people who were watching probably don't care for a segment on foreign films. Yeah I couldn't stand the song from Ethridge myself either, but I wasn't a fan of many of the songs.

The old man from Little Miss Sunshine kind of agrees with you on the topic of the young girl. He said he didn't want her to win - he thinks it would force her to deviate from the life of a normal, young girl. Iwo Jima was on par in terms of directing with The Departed - that was a toughy for me.

Babel would've been the best movie by far this year but the cinematography IHMO ruined and, to me, made it feel very unprofessional. =/

Also think What's his name Sheen (who's not related to Martin or Charlie) should've been nominated for his role as Tony Blair in The Queen.

Oh, and Pan's Labyrinth should've been nominated for best picture. Guillermo Del Toro for Best Director as well.

I liked Babel. It wasn't awesome, but it was pretty good. I particularly liked the narrative thread involving the Mexican nanny - I felt that one was the strongest of them all.

Helen Mirren deserved her statue, no doubt.

Happy Feet on the other hand was boring... while I think Cars was not up to Pixar's very high standards, I still felt it was a much better rounded film.

I have vague plans for World Domination
