Just trying to understand the difference between the two since both are dual core and 64bit.

Some 'D' models have both cores on a single die while newer ones have two separate dies. And rather than each core having its own bus, both cores share a bus. But I don't know if thats a result of having a single die or not. If so, then wouldn't the newer chips with 2 dies not be subject to this issue? The Core 2 Duo uses less power and can have higher bus speeds.

I know I've barely covered basics here, I'm a bit behind on technology these days. But considering the huge price difference of a Core 2 and a D, what other significant improvements does Core 2 offer over D? Oh, and let me know if I've stated something wrong in what I thought I knew.

pertty tricky since amd and intel seem to be haveing fun comming out with new processors every month now, but i dont know they might be the same thing just made different.

My core duo 2 in my laptop is pretty sweet makes it a good work horse for gaming servers and number crunching i havnt used any of AMD's dual core chips, but from what i'v heard there isn't much of a diffrence

Does it get hot? How does it handle running at 100% for an ammount of time?

I prefer a Pentium M in a laptop coz it produces less heat. I had a bad experience of an IBM laptop running a Celeron chip once and it was forever having overheating problems, put me of desktop chips in laptops for life.

Core 2's are one of the coolest chips yet.

Depends how many passengers the bus takes, and how bad the driver is. For example, if there are 3 passengers and the driver is particularly bad, that's 3 dies.

Phaelax, are you sure Pentium D's and Core Duo's are 64-bit? I've never heard that

ah, thanx indi, I can see Core Duo replaces the Pentium M and keeps the low power, low heat, and thus low fan noise mentality I don't think you get 64 bits until you get to Core 2 model though I wouldn't worry about it as there are few 64bit apps around.

I'd go for Core Duo then on the reputation of my Pentium M experience

Don't be but off by low clock speeds you can't compaire these low power chips on MHz, "1.6 GHz Pentium M can typically attain the performance of a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4-M." If you didn't know this before hand I'm sure most people would pick the 2.4GHz power sapping chip with a similar name!

My laptop runs very hot sometimes especially when im running a heros of annilated civ's game server. the little sticker on the bottom has actually partially melted off so im investing in a laptop cooler pad.

But other then when i run servers it runs pretty damn silent as well as cool.

My old Intel 1.2Ghz Celeron laptop would only run at 100% CPU for 15mins max (5 mins if on a duvet) before deciding to go into emergency cool down mode and slow the processor to a crawl.

I tried metal cooling pads but it only helped a little. Desktop chips should never be placed into a tiny pizza size box

I didn't think the D was 64bit either, but Newegg claims they are so I was a bit confused.
