the funny thing is, I've seen CG versions of Saturn look more realistic ...though it wouldn't be realistic anymore, would it? lol

those are nice, it looks beautiful

They are surrealistic. I like the way the shadows fall on that first pic. And "Symmetry in Shadow" is pretty freakin' amazing.

But this pic:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/pia08351.html

that was taken in december is about as cool as it gets

My best effort at photographing Saturn (Done on a Meade LX90 with a 2Mp Camera)

Not quite on NASA levels but at least I don't false colour my images I'm sure I read they false coloured the Mars sky somewhere because it look too much like an earth desert shot.

That's actually a decent shot. I been thinkin about getting me a telescope, would be fantastic out here, pitch black in the country side and no polution. They do false color it, just to bring out the detail, and detail that's not visible to the human eye.

The meade LX-90 8" scrafices sharpness in favour of light gathering. But you can get better sharper shots if you overlay and post-process them.

Unfortunatly it amplifies my bad light polution, i got better views of dim objects like galaxies with the Meade ETX-125 Mak-Cas which has inkey black backgrounds.

If i could find one i would buy the Meade LX200 7" Mak-Cas(Damn u Meade why did u stop making it?)

Here's my jupiter...

Mars is trickier as it's a fairly small planet when compaired to Jupiter or Saturn.

the moon it easy to photograph because it's so bright...

closer please...

i said closer!

wow, good shots. i've always wanted to build a nice telescope to take pictures, i have several books on the subject, would make for a great side hobby...something to get away from the stress of modeling and codeing all the time, lol.

Ok, I am a total n00b when it comes to sky watching, and this is one question I am interested in. How do you know where exactly to point your telescope in order to see, e.g Jupiter or Saturn? I mean, it's easy for the moon, you see it with your naked eye and then point it there, but what about those planets that you can't see??

Relax, I understand j00!

GatorHex where did you find those moon pictures?

Six inch mirror lenses lets you see Saturn but not in color, think you need 8 - 14 inch.

I've made some moon shots but I use an Ixus40 that is not dedicaced to astronomy photography

Look:

Nearly full moon with a "moon" filter:

Biggest zoom I can get with the telescope but the moon move then so fast that it make photography difficult (even with the telescope motor):

@ Freddix, Nice one what scope was you using?

It's the damn earths rotation thats the problem, if you wana photo anything fainter than the moon you need a computer controlled scope to keep everything aligned.

@ Sly D, erm I cheat and ask my telescope computer to find them. Some people say you're not a real astronomer if you do this. Trying to find a galaxy is like looking for a needle in a haystack though! There was a nice book about finding stuff manualy called something like "Turn left at Orions Belt"

@ How Do, I made the moon pics, its easy it's only 384,400km away you can't miss it with pretty much the cheapest scope

Saturn however is 1,200,000,000km away so is a bit trickier but still just about possible to photo on a manual scope.

Sirrius Star is 7 x 10 trillion kilometers away. Stars are bright and not too bad to photograph.

M31 Galaxy is 106 x 10 trillion kilometers away! These are rock hard to photo as they so faint. I've not managed this yet probably due to living in a light polluted city.

@HowDo: I have this Seben Zuper Zoom 8mm-24mm :
https://www.wilhelmy-it.de/sms/shop/index.php?mode=view&idlistpos=10
It's easier to put a camera on this

@GatorHEX: I use a Meade DS2130 Telestar telescope but I never found how to perfectly collimate it... it's not easy (look the photo for the telescope)
http://cordierfr.free.fr/MoonHQ/MeadeDS2130&Me.JPG
I'm sure I can get better result with a better collimation but ... it's not an easy task
My scope has a motor to follow start/objects but it's difficult to get a perfect alignemnt setup to make it follow perfectly objects ...

Ah nice lens, my stratagey is to mate the filter thread on my Casio QV2900 directly up to a telescope lense then it sees pretty much what I see. I think Casio were crazy to stop making this cool twist turbo zoom camera! Nikon are the only ones making twisty cameras now and can pretty much charge what they like.

GatorHex I now see were I've been going wrong now, thought you had to take the lens off, no wonder it was not working.

Anyone used a webcam on an eye piece,if so how did you do it?

@ Higgins, LOL I wish I had one of those

@ HowDo, a lot of people mount the web cam to the end of a telescope lens protector case or 35mm file case then it just slips over the lens, if your lens has a rubber eye cup it holds even better.

On the ScopeTronix Digi-T system you remove the rubber eyecup which reveals a groove running all the way round then it uses 3 grommit screw to hold it's self in place.

Web cams can produce some good results coz you can take 100s of images without much fuss direct to tyour laptop and stack them to get something looking rather nice, detailed and sharp.

Here's a link to some dudes web cam pics, even though it's got half the number of pixels of my camera that stacking software realy delivers the reseults with 100+ images..
http://www.burri-web.org/bm98/gallery/solsys.htm

Best web cam seems to be the Logitech QuickCam Fusion 1.3Mp but not seen one modded for a scope yet.
