For those who haven't seen threads that have been posted over the course of about a year, I have always have performance problems, each time, I found it helped improve my performance, and my PC has regained a lot of its performance because some of the things posted and things I've done, elsewhere, I've just got 'upgrade your ram, 256mb is useless' kind of replies, when in fact that isn't true, I've seen other computers with the same ram just handle things fine.

Also, I know I said I'd be replacing XP with 2000 or restarting my hard drive, but to be honest, it's not a fanciful thought backing loads of stuff to CD and going through the process of installing/reinstalling, also, the prices of Win2k is so high I probably could just buy 1gb ram.

Aside from the gobble-dee-gook, what my next question, appears to be the only explanation why my PC is still so slow after clearing so much rubbish off, that is background processes.

I compared my PC to another of a similar spec with background processes, on the other I recorded about 20 with an AVG and Sygate on and Microsoft Word running, working smoothly, (I found when running AVG and Sygate with this thing, major slow downs) The amount of Page file used was about 170mb, this one, runs at about 300mb of the page file used.

So here I need to know how to clean up my background processes, so I only have the ones I need, I'd rather not have to close every single one every time I start my PC. That should lower the page file usage too, I would assume.

My second problem, that temporarily slows down my PC like hell whenever it feels like that is one of the svchost.exe processes, where it starts to use 70-90mb of the page file and 90-100% of my CPU, simple solution close it...but no audio afterwards, or block it, then I can't connect to the internet.

So if anybody has any solutions, I'd appreciate it, thank you.

Well, if you want to find out if a process is a bad thing, just sort by the amount of ram or cpu and if it looks dogy, just look it up on google. The first link (or so) will be a site telling you if that processs is good or bad. If it's bad, search for it and DELETE IT! hehe. I Know its pretty simple, but it really does work.

I also find that turning down the special effects on the computer speeds it up a tad too. (rightclick computer>properties>Advanced (tab)>performance (button)>then remove things you think you won't need.

Haha, exactly the same thing happened to me with spyware doctor, cheeky gits The reason probably is that if you find many errors on your system, it'll scare you into buying it, didn't on me when one found 3000 registry errors, I just found a free app did the same thing.

Sorry, I'm not on often, the reason sort of ties back to the topic of this thread, I sit there 10 minutes waiting for it to recover. But I'll probably be on tomorrow.

On getting a new computer, I really should get a job, I mean I'm the guy at the party who isn't driving or getting wasted

if your computer is going slowly, i have a suggestion. Buy AMUST Registry Cleaner. its a really great program. tell it to fic all the registry errors, and then have it compact your registry. it made mine faster.

I've already cleaned my registry, it has just over 3000 errors, did run faster afterwards, but it seems the only problems now are around the ones I've posted, they just need some solutions (which one has been posted, which I am yet to try ) But thanks.

Probably a year or two since my last reinstall and that was due to a deadly virus my AV wouldn't detect.

Well if you think a format is a good idea, I'll do it, I'll grab some CD's and get started. Not the option I want best but what the hey.

Also, System Mechanic Pro, it has errors loading, probably not a good sign, which probably supports indi's solution. If I can't kill these last two problems (If they really are my last two) then a format is a better idea then, clean slate, at least since the last restart, I've learnt how to manage my performance much more efficiently.

Cheers.

I did the reboot, and wow I've never seen Windows so fast Although reluctant to back everything I need up, I did it and an happy that I did, performance is so much better. Also, Doom 3 is running quite smoothly, small lag and low FPS (Around 15-20), but hey, I'm 128mb ram short of what I should be running for the game

So, indi was right, despite the reluctance, rebooting it was the best option, I just forgot how fast Windows would run of this thing.

If you're interested, current performance specs are (With Firefox, AVG and Sygate running)

CPU - 5%
Page File - 210mb (80mb before Sygate, ATI Drivers and AVG were installed)
Processes - 33
RAM Left - 50mb, before said programs were installed I ran with 150mb left and after running doom 3 I have that, from what I've been told that's not a bad thing, it just XP likes to take as much ram as it can get for the processes running.

Cheers.

now be a nazi about what you install and things should be ok for a while.

dont install winzip, just get winrar
dont install 50 video codec players, just get VLC
dont install 50 IM clients just get one for all
dont install weird stuff.
Make sure you have a user and Admin account from the get go here so if things go pear shaped you can fall back on the admin acccount.
make a gaming user account so you reduce whats loaded into that account at runtime etc.
