Just saw '300' and it was pretty good. Good fight scenes (practically the whole movie) and not with a few humorous jokes.

I was kinda unimpressed by the trailers for it. I'll probably still go see it though. How does it compare to SinCity, same kind of humour/violence etc?

The trailers didn't exactly move me to go see it either, but a bunch of friends went to a midnight showing so I figured what the heck. I really liked SinCity, but 300 wasn't as good. Visual style wasn't as gritty, but good. I'd say the humor was along the same style. The king has plenty of comical remarks, and they aren't cheezy lines.

For instance,

Eh, it looks funnier on screen. It's just those types of jokes you have to witness in their own context.

As for violence and blood, you won't be disappointed.

Wednesday night, History channel was talking about the movie. Anyone else catch it?

I want to see this but I'm almost afraid to after seeing other movies based on Greece (Alexander, Troy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding). But the battle of Thermopylae is easily and without question my absolute favorite story that comes out of the ancient mediterranean. I'd love to see Frank Miller's interpretation of the Persian Immortals, who are my second-favorite military unit in history (following the Roman Marian Legions of course ). Rarely does Hollywood show the Immortals, and it's amazingly stupid when they don't since they pretty much single-handedly shaped the Persian Empire during their time (and some say they led to samurais in the future although I don't personally see the connection there). And Thermopylae without the Persian Immortals is like the beaches of Normandy without the Germans... it just doesn't work.

From a historical perspective is this movie good, or did they "Pearl Harbor" the story?

the face masks of the immortals did remind me of samurai.

Historical-wise, it's pretty accurate. And it kept you awake, unlike Pearl Harbor which works better than sleeping pills.

I heard that the main historical discrepancy is that they somehow forgot the 700 thespians that were helping the Spartans out

300 is an AMAZING movie. Epic on so many levels. The fight scenes will knock your socks off. Plenty of fast paced action with a lot of blood. I went into the movie with a bag of popcorn but didn't eat any of it because I was so into the film.

300 was the second movie I went to where everybody actually whistled and clapped when the credits rolled.

I believe this is the right time to say: 300 is my favorite movie.

Not all of them, most of them left, only a thousand or so stayed for the final battle.

I saw this movie last night and it was great, although I could have done without the soft-core porn interjected throughout for no apparent reason. Really kind of annoying since it didn't progress the story at all. But other than that, the fight scenes were AMAZING and very cleverly done. 9 thumbs up!

That's not as bad as you think you said.

They're all sort of similar. They've each got greeks, and "hordes" of some sort, and they were all incredibly dull and could be used as natural sedatives, for me anyway

300 was really horrible. I wanted to like it. The story is one of the greatest victories in European history, and the preview had Nine Inch Nails in the soundtrack. I was willing to look past a lot.

I went in thinking it might be a semi-historical film like "Gladiator". Instead, I got a cartoon with silly fantasy characters and bad special effects. When the Persians brought in their first "secret weapon" guy that gets killed in ten seconds, I almost walked out of the theater.

It's too bad, because the military strategy of that battle is so interesting. In this movie, the Spartans won not because of training or tactics or equipment, but because they wear speedos in the snow, and apparently they can fly.

I think the scene when the king goes to see the oracle sums it up best. The king climbs straight up a 90-degree cliff to see the oracle. Instead of climbing with his legs, like you are supposed to, he jumps and catches a rock with one arm, pulling himself up with physics more unrealistic than Mission Impossible, all to a rock soundtrack (but no Nine Inch Nails in the actual movie).

If you like that kind of garbage, go see this movie. I can see how this movie would be appealing to the very dense.

I hear the Irans are angry by it too, since it shows the Persians as barbaric or evil...or something..

I wonder if a war has ever been started by a bad movie...

they did, but they regrouped at the end, having their kid's grown up, and they now have an army of like 1,250,000+ or something like that.

It was good, but had it's fair share of nudity and sex, which I didn't quite enjoy, because I personally think that should stay out of media, and be personal between man and wife.

You realise it's not supposed to be historical, right? It's based off a graphic novel...

Wow JoshK... insulting people who love action movies, great... ironically urm, very dense. Great. Its more of a fantasy, it comes from a comic book... Go watch a documentary or a "historical" movie like gladiator...

I loved it, Lots of nice action scenes!

I'm going to watch it this afternoon; I'll let you know if I'm one of the "dense" masses or not, Josh.

Yes, I heard the Iranians are upset at the hisorical inaccuracies of this movie that's based on a comic book. Of course, I don't believe the Iranians have much ground to stand on...since they profess that the Nazi Holocaust never happened...go figure.

Given that this is an American movie, and American movies usually distort history to show disproportionate and/or factually inaccurate American involvement (invariably on the winning side), I'm surprised that the ancient Spartans aren't all portrayed as Americans (after all, it hardly matters that the new world hadn't been discovered then ... !) and the bad guys don't all have British accents.

The worst film I ever saw was the Patriot.

I guess I prefer real history to comic books.

Apparently Xerxes is ten feet tall and wears nothing but body piercings. And he has a giant fat guy that has swords for arms.

This movie was so bad, and it could have been so good.

I think the whole British-American conflict was over about 180 years ago, lol . I know most people here have nothing against British people (except that they hate us), and most people like your accents .

Quote: "Given that this is an American movie, and American movies usually distort history to show disproportionate and/or factually inaccurate American involvement"

We are actually taught on a fairly unbiased level with history. For example, we're taught (contrary to what was taught in the past), that the American's were responsible for the Boston Massacre, and it was only British soldiers defending themselves. We're taught that the United States likely would have lost the American Revolution if a) British was really determined to keep us, but instead they were occupied with European affairs, and b) The French hadn't helped us. We're taught that the American's "skill" and "technology" had nothing to do with us winning in WWI, but it was sheer numbers that were used to hold of the Germans. Despite what you might think, we aren't a brainwashed country of how great we are, and we are taught unbiased history for the most part, we don't have to be the heroes in everything .

Anyways, I don't know if I'd like the movie or not. I like action, but I like history too. It was an interesting battle, and I'm sure they dramatized the heck out of it .

@Philip: Where is that from? If you are talking about the East Coasters ( Only a bit of them, the media fanatics), I would agree, many of the media fanatics on that side hate the world, and if you talk about some of California, I would also agree, but for the most part, many US citizens just think the world hates us, because well, most of it does.

Hollywood is a pile of crap the size of a city, and really, you guys get your opinions from them, and our stupid tourists. You never hear anything about our smart tourists that are very nice, and do nothing wrong, you just here about the drunk fat guys who start fights.

When i first heard about 300 and watched the trailer, i thought it looked like a good film, but knew that the mere fact it's about a battle involving the persians would make the iranians upset, due to the fact that there was no doubt it would portray them in a negative way, and then several days later, i read about iranians being annoyed at it, so i watched it to see how bad it really was. to be fair i think they do have a point, but i don't think they should take it seriously.

***Potential spoiler warnings. historical account of battle below***

The battle was reconstructed pretty accurately. The iranians/persians do have a very proud history, considering they were one of the worlds first civilizations. King Xerxes managed to build his vast empire because cities he took over were <censored> scared when they saw the size of his truely massive army, including the famous army of invincibles, who were sorta like the ninja of the Persian empire.

However, these "invincibles" made up a very small size of their army, the rest was just slaves, which is why they fought so badly and hence any city that stood up to them actually did very well to fight them off, before only being overun eventually by overwhelming numbers.

...Then they came to the spartans who were exeptionally good fighters in comparison to the rest of the region, and hence halted the persian invasion.

King Xerxes then vanished, probably in humiliation, rumoured to have gone mad and toured Africa, where he disappears from history books altogether. almost all historical accounts of the battle were recorded by the greeks, hence it is very possible that they have been exagurated in order to make a good story to pass down the generations. However, the issue for the iranians isnt the fact they suffered a humiliating defeat, since every empire in existance has had its bad tales to tell.

In the film, the Persians are shown very negatively, wearing chains from every orafice etc in a barbaric way in comparison to the spartans who were all smartly dressed in white togas etc. in reality there is no evidence that shows the persians dressed in such a way. This negative portrayal is also shown further by the fact that on the persian side are so many disfigured people, for example, the executioner having severed arms with blades as replacements.

Also, we see the King Xerxes proclaiming himself a a God-king, however, the persians followed Zoroastrianism at the time, the areas first monotheistic religeon, which had nothing to do with god-kings, which for example, the egyptians or romans claimed.

Of course, this would be pretty much irrelevant if it wasnt for the threat of iran being invaded by the US, with everyone in iran being anxious about what's going to happen to them over the next decade, it's understandable that they may feel threatened or intimated easily, and would explain why they accuse this film of being the first step for the western governments demonising and hence preparing their public for war. after all, this is normally how most wars start off, for example, before Hitler started persecuting the Jews, he spread leaflets around demonising them, hence preparing his people to accept the persecution of Jews amongst them.

However, i think the Iranians should know that this isn't how we really think of them, i was watching it knowing at the end of the day, it was a film and dramatisation, and is based millenia ago, and since then MANY things in the world, and persia/iran have changed since then, hence it could in no way be closely similar to the iran of today. I think that anyone who watched this film and came out saying iran needs to be bombed are either extreme idiots (who probably couldnt put iran on a map, or even relate persia to iran, hence are no threat anyway) or people who already had there mind made up before the film, hence the overal impact of the film couldnt really have made that much of a difference.

hence, I say, enjoy the film for what it is. when watching it, don't think of anything to do with politics or current times. I loved the slow motion fight scenes and graphics in general. however, the actual film itself I thought was very cliché of such a film, where very few people take on hordes of oncoming invaders, for example LOTR and that film I saw about the few Americans holding a point in japan while waves of japs come at them, cant remember the name of it though. actually, towards the end I was thinking "gladiator". there was this noble woman doing all the politics behind the scenes of the fighting, and then the scene in the corn field, but then, to my amazement, the same flippin' sound track comes on at the end!

anyway, anyone here seen the original 300 film? it's a far more realistic account of the battle, since they didn't have the CGI or other technology to play around with and dramatise the story with.

edit: all this stuff i've been reading in you're posts about brits hating america and not the other way around. I've seen videos, where british/australian journalists go to the states, and people say that britain should be bombed next, and then scarily point to it on a map when being asked to point to iraq/israel/afghanistan etc. so there. SOME americans want britain bombed. dont deny it.
