Hey im 17 and in a ind study course at my school. going to be finishing up learning some C++ Pretty soon and I am going to pick up a copy of DBP and start learning that I think. I am wondering what tools other then that I should pick up. I really have not made any games before so my knowledge of what I need is not that great. I probally should pick up a modeling tool of some sort like anim8tor or something.

Also could someone tell me the different between a tool like that and a world builder? any tools I should pick up would be greatly appreciate. thanks for your time and help.

To get started, you would be better using pre-made models. There's loads of free ones on the net, just make sure they are designed for games (low poly). Modelling is an art in itself, and will steal your precious learning time!

So should I just buy DB then, or should I pick up a book ?

I got the boxed version, but got mine from Fast Track Publishing / Amazon, which came with a couple of games and loads of Dark Matter models and a printed manual.

The online version doesn't have these but the online version is half price so a real bargain this month only £19.99!

You don't realy need to buy any books everything is available in the help files, or online.

I don't think you can compair the price of the boxed version this month as it's half price on the download, so I guess go for the download, if it was normal price (only £10 cheaper instead of £30 cheaper) I'd say go for the boxed and get the free model pack.

I got DarkMatter 1. I don't use it but I plan on using it. It is a wonderful package. The media it supplies is more than enough for a series of games. Buy it.

3D Modelling, Animating - Milkshape 3D - $25
UVMapping - LithUnwrap - $0
Texturing,2D Art - Photoshop Cs2 - (n/a)
World - 3D World Studio - $120
Music - FL Studio XXL Package - $361

The online version has basically no models besides those that are used in the example programs. So yes, as xenocythe said, you should buy darkmatter to begin with until you learn to make your own quality models.

Where does everyone get Max from these days

Anyway,i think you shouldn't bother on media for games yet,as well...you first have to learn coding. When you have incredible media, but your game sucks...its not fun.if your media is crap.though the game good, you can always remake the media but the game will be liked.

I don't find it hard to believe that his school may have bought a few copies.

common people are walking in line.

Just about every computer in my school (several hundred) has photoshop 7.0 loaded on them, and a few have CS2 (but lets not go into that... hehe).

When someone says "I have X software" it doesn't usually mean his school has them.
