The best place I ever worked at was Manchester University Computing.

They had a free Gym and shower, but the only thing I realy used was the free drinks machine: cola, orange, hot chocolate, cup-a-soup etc.

I never bothered taking lunch I just lived on the free soup and croutons for 2 years

Yes, Google would be a cool place to work! They have free high-quality meals all day for all employees--- that is quite the perk. Would save a lot of money, as I spend enough as it is at the work cafeteria

Main google plex has I think 3-4 gourmet cafes and they're free! I recently did some marketing research about working for Google and I must say I'd give just about anything to work there. Engineers also get 20% of their work week to work on personal projects.

Free massages whenever they want I heard as well...

The main perk is knowing that you and your peers are pretty much the most intelligent people on the planet, and your company is one of the most powerful entities in the world.

Nah, the massages aren't actually free. I think its $20/hr for those, but they do have free onsight doctors.

What so the people who work for these companies are like, nuclear physicists now?

I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them actually were.

They hire doctorates in various engineering fields, so yes some of them are just as smart as nuclear physicists

They basically have most of the greatest computer scientists out there.

I think they grabbed the guy who made Python...

I read an analyst's report that said a company couldn't hold together with so many brilliant minds, and that a 'Son of Google' would break off with the guys who felt like they weren't being used properly.

Seem to be holding together pretty well at the moment though!

You mean why do they hire them?

To solve hilariously hard computer science problems and research new technologies.

There's also the persistant rumour of GoogleOS...

One of their new technologies is Searchmash. You can use it at the moment - its good, I believe it was designed to solve the main current problem with Google which is that it relies heavily on Pagerank, so it is very hard for new websites to get to the top of the results, even if they are the most relevant.

You also tend to get Wikipedia pages ranked highly even if they aren't the most relevant results...

It's really hard to design amazing search engines because (I can't remember the exact numbers) 95% of words on the internet are the same 500 words.

Pfft.. to be honest they probably just steal them to keep them away from Microsoft.

They've taken people away from Amazon as well I believe. I doubt there will be a GoogleOS.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just take all these 'brilliant minds' throw them in a room and tell them to "come up with something awesome".
