I recently bought a new PC..for whatever reason, a new modem came with it..I just thought it was conveinent for not having to swap out some stuff.
This new modem however, if much faster. It usually connects around 26kbs where my old one, I was lucky to get a connection at 14kbs

another good thing about this new modem, is that it actually uses it's compression..the old one supposedly supported it, but never used it

This may not seem like much, but when you live somewhere wehre there is no highspeed internet, every speed increase counts

..just wanted to share that..

OMG the last time i had a 14kbps connection i was using a 33Mhz PC!!

I would expect 48-56kbps from todays modems. I was using a US Robotics External (I liked the flashy lights)

Gator - if your location in correct, its likely to be within 50 miles of civilization. If the best he can connect at is 26kbps (and is also worthy of a celebratory post) I can only logically assume he either lives on the borders of civilization (AKA Wales) or, instead of a copper line into the house, its made of cardboard...

Town you say... Is these one of these towns where there are more pubs than, say, newsagents and churches?

If you phone is crackley too it might be a sign your telephone company need to replace some wires or the might have you on a line share if telephone poles are short.(also causes ADSL to randomly disconnect id someone picks up)

ok, my city is really small and we have fiber optic, so... you must be way the heck out of any service area or a really low population region so that any good ISP won't waste money going out there. Man oh man!

v.44 & v.92 standards plus hardware handshaking with new cpu speed is more like the factors why

don't think CPU speed matters, though maybe the driver used does..
hmmm...old modem was made in 2000, but has there been any added standards since then!?

older modems are a simple digital signal processor and the computer handles the rest.
like winmodem or softmodem.

CPU speed does count in this regard.

Nah, I live in midwestern US People love their bars around here.

They serve food in bars. Around here there's only one bar with good food. They serve cajun foods.. mmmmmm...

There's a few others that can make a decent burger tho

Of course, don't you ever enter a bar with your modem in your hand, then walk up to some guy and say, "Can you believe we use to rely on these things?" Then you chuck it at a dart board that some other guys were using. The guys get mad and you get beat up, until you pull out a DSL Modem, then they bow before you.
