what do you think is the highest safe CPU temp?

all I know is that on my mobo, whenever it reaches a temperature of 178F, it overrides everything and kicks up the fans...
(try using speedfan)

I wouldn't want to see my CPU more than 60 degrees C. It would probably be just fine though until about 70 C, THEN I'd REALLY start worrying about it's health. The hotter you go though the more stress is put on the circuits. You really should keep it as low as possible. It will run faster and work better too.

60 degrees C and you fans go balistic
80 degrees C is supposed to shorten CPU life
100+ C and you will get random errors as electrons jump circuits (probably your OS will crash or the CPU will turn the MB off before you get this far though)

I use Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to keep mine under control. Fans then don't need to jump straight from 40% to 100% to keep things cool

Last I heard, Intels generally tend to run hotter than AMDs.

Mine gets to 65c before my fans get to about 25%, 68c and they go on full blast, which is quite rare.

Gator, you'll be lucky if your CPU doesn't fry at 100C!

I get nervous when mine sits at about 40-45C (as it always does, even under heavy load ).

The best thing you can do for your CPU is take the fan off and clean it! Then, clean the heatsink.

Record the general temp of your CPU before you do, then again after and you'll be amazed at how much dust and what-not you'll get out and the difference it makes.

That, of course, doesn't apply if you have a water cooling device.

I've had mine at 85°C before. Most likely due to the fact that it needed a clean.

Well, sure it runs that hot, but it's horrible for it.

My athlon MP idled at 72C.

Quote: "Last I heard, Intels generally tend to run hotter than AMDs. "

I keep hearing ppl saying this, and I don't have a clue where they got such an idea. Athlons always ran hotter than Pentiums.

That's a steady idle for my P4 prescott, but those were made fun of because they were considered to run so much hotter than other Pentiums. (which is still way cooler than any Athlon I've ever seen)

Looks like I stand corrected.

http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry1342.html

I guess at some point AMD really did become cooler than Intel. I'm guessing on the 64bit chips since I never really followed them too well from the start.

Yeah, I have an Athlon 1.3 gig, and that sucker runs constant at 60-65, but that's about normal for them. The highest I've seen my Athlong 64 3200+ running is about 42, and that's after exiting a game or something system taxing. They really cooled them down. My CPU idles at about 35-38. Intel used to be a ton cooler, but AMD got it under control and they are actually cooler now.

I'm being given three unnamed temperatures... any chance of being told what they are?
One is 73C.

NeX, I'm guessing that the 73C is your video card as they tend to run alot hotter than the CPU. Nothing to be alarmed about there.

Wiz open your case and send the fan speeds up and down that's how I discovered what mine are. You can then rename them to sensible names somewhere in the settings.

P.S. Don't leave all your fans on 0 speed for long... I smell something burning

I think Intel CPUs are the coolest now, their Duo stuff is based on the Pentium M too I belive. I harldy ever hear anything from the fans.

The TEMP1 and TEMP2 remain at sensible temperatures... the origin of TEMP3 bugs me though.

TEMP3 boots at 60C in a 15C house; I'm going to let it go as a glitch.

@Phaelax: Actually the C2D reclaimed the title for intel, lol. They run cooler now. Mine runs at a steady 29-30 c with stock cooler. Stand corrected, went down to 25.

And I was happy when I switched to a Pentium 4 and watched my temperature drop to 45.

i'd get worried at about 55-60, 80-90 and i'd be really panicking but i've accidentily had my cpu at 86° for a short period with no apparent ill effects (i accidentally knocked the fan controller to minimum speed while my cpu was maintaining 20-30%load over quite a long period of time (as in 20-60minutes) and thought my graphics fan was a bit noisy so i turned on systools to see the temp and hada heart attack when i saw the cpu was at 86, maxing out the fan got my cpu back to ~40 within a minute though, i swear i had the bios set to auto shutdown at 80)
my cpu notmally idles at ~36° in this warm room (i'm talking scotland warm not really hot) at under medium fan speed

it's an athlon64 3000 and it's temp has varied quite a bit from cooler to cooler.

currently i'm using an evo33 with a horizontally mounted mobo (so the cooler is vertical making best use of the heatpipe thing) and it's great, best bit is you can't really clog it with fluff like my old zelman flower used to, or at least it's mmuch easier to clean if it does.

basically a modern cpu should be under 50° in a reasonably cool environment, if the ambient temperature is 30° for example, i wouldn't expect 36° as my cpu temperature.

would you consider 45-50° safe for a hard disk?

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 720GB total hdd, ati radeon X1900gt 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

wow...did anyone use F here...lol guess I should learn to do conversions in my head for a forum like this..though I know 80 is hot, 35 is comfortable(for me)(I think), and 0/-* is cold

My CPU (Pentium D, Dual Core) idles at 45C. Usually goes up to 47 or 50 under a heavy load. And its because of my video card .

Funny thing is, my northbridge chip idles hotter than my cpu... Figure that one out (no, it is not a combined north-south bridge chipset)

My processor is a 2.66ghz p4 and it idles at 25°C (77°F), while my northbridge chip idles at 30°C (86°F)

Actually, it's probably because of the fact that i used Arctic Silver Ceramic thermal paste, along with the fact that i have my cpu fan hooked up to my psu's 12v line so it always runs top speed, and is not motherboard controlled
