i am looking at dual core cpu s and so far several amd dual cores catch my eye

first of all, i compared the fx and athlon x2 and i see no difference, what makes these cpu's what they are?
another lack of knowledge i have is the socket types. AM2 or socket F?
my instincts are telling me to go with AM2
When i was browsing through amd cpu's this morning at school, a classmate told me that i would be a complete f*cktard to buy an amd. And i should go with a core 2 duo. I looked at core 2 duo's, and they are all worse than any of the amd cpu's i listed above. The l2 cache is bigger but its shared which i am guessing makes it worse. l1 cache is somewhat small (smaller than an athlon 6000). the bus speed is smaller. This guy told me that nor speed or cache or bus speed don't matter because benchmarks proved core 2 duos to be better than the top of the line athlon x2 amd. I have no idea where these benchmarks came from and how can it be possible for a core 2 duo to outperform a 6000. a lot of the reviews on the amd's mentioned the amd's running better than an core 2 duo The only intels that are better than the athlon 6000 are core 2 extremes and core 2 quad which are $1000.
My instincts also tell me that if i want to build a gaming pc (which i am) amd is the way to go.
The guy who flamed amd this morning told me that amd's hve some bottleneck. but he never told me what is the bottleneck. Anyone know?
and if anyone thinks i should get a core 2 duo, please share your opinion.
dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them
