Ah, I live about an hour out of San Fransisco (Manteca), and let me tell you, San Fransisco is unlike any other city in the world. Get used to windy streets and epileptic seizures as you drive through the city.

What a smegging journey! 24 hours it took in the end, should have been 15. Delay at Gawick caused me to miss my connection from MSP to SJC so I booked into a flight to pheonix to get a connection from there to SJC - but THAT flight then got delayed, but only delayed after my baggage was booked in.

So I ended up going via Las Vagas. I dont know what route my baggae took, but its not in San Jose yet!!

@Nick: Welcome, to America's Flight System, the worst in the world!

edit: You are supposed to plan like your flights delayed most of the time, fyi=P, atleast that is what it is like at PDX and Phoenix, and Dallas/Fort Worth Airports...

Ohhh I see! That would have been useful to know before I booked the flights!

Edit: Just listening to an interesting talk on security in PHP (XSS, etc) by Rasmus Lerdorf (the guy who invented PHP)

Just remember, when you leave the california airport, make you're you're at LEAST 1 hour early before the flight or you might never get on.

Phaelax - Thanks for the tip. As with most things in life, you learn by your mistakes. My mistake was assuming that flights to and within the US would run as smoothly as flights I've had within Europe and to New Zealand. How wrong. The US customs is SO slow! Check in for the US flight took almost 2 hours (the bit before you've had your hand luggage scanned). And what the hell is the deal with this stupid rule that all fluids have to be in a clear plastic bag and must be no more than 100ml?! Fair enough, you need to be able to see the contents of a bag - but 100ml is tiny! Deodorant cans are often 150ml. 100ml of shower gel is nothing. The final annoyance was having to take my shoes off to have them scanned not only at Gatwick, but once I went through security to GET OFF the flight! I mean how am I supposed to have assembled a shoe bomb in that time?! Lol!

I do understand the need for national security - but until the US release their iron fist on things a bit, I'm not gonna fly back to this country, which is a real shame as so far I've LOVED it (excluding flights). NWA (Northwest Airlines) have been really friendly and things feel less claustrophobic than in the UK.

Well thanks to plastic guns, liquid explosives, and ceramic knives, what good is metal detectors? I mean, they're required but wait ten years, and then see how bad it is. Plus, I don't think foreign countries as yours have as much terrorism as we do.

Dont wanna sound rude or break the AUP - but the UK has had terrorism for many years longer than the US with the IRA, although the IRA never flew planes into things - they much prefered car bombs.

Anywho - Day 2 of the conference! At least now I can go into the day with some sleep behind me!

@Nick: Yah, but you have to remember we had terrorism in the 80's as well, its just not as publicized. The Oklahoma bombings, The Carrier Bombings, the first World Trade Center Attack, ect.

Also, make sure to bring back info on PHP 6, if they speak of it=P

Oh yeah - of course. Strange isn't it - it's only recently that its become a 'big deal'.

Heh - there was only the 1 talk on PHP, most of the other stuff is about Drupal, Joomla and Yahoo's services (API's for thins like Flickr and Yahoo Pipes).
