I'm too cheap to buy Photoshop (and don't necessarily like it anyways--- use it all day at work). However, I need a good image-editing piece of software. I'm trying the Trial version and so far, in my opinion, it surpasses Photoshop in many ways. Plus it's a damn good price--- $79CDN. I'm sick and tired of downloading these free editors that are always lacking--- i.e. Paint.NET doesn't have a good airbrush tool, etc. etc.

Anyone try PaintShopPro Photo XI, and what are your thoughts?

I have PSP X and in my opinion, I like it more than Photoshop. It's easy to use, everything is laid out right in front of you and it's very straightforward. I know Photoshop has some very very useful features that PSP X lacks, but with a few color filters and effects plugins, you will be very near to PS with PSPX. At 1/10 the price, you get more than 70% of the features of Photoshop. It's lacking in a few areas like it's 16 bits per channel images, and you have many restrictions placed on your image, many effects aren't compatible, and many layer options are disabled, but face it, not many usable image formats even save with that kind of quality anyhow. But for it's price and quality, it is a very strong contender to Photoshop.

I quite like PaintshopPro, in many ways its better than photoshop, however i'm too adjusted to photoshop.

I haven't used it in a while but do you still get Animation shop with it? I always liked that...

I have used Paintshop Pro for years and years. Currently using V9 and use it a fair bit during the week to do web graphics for work. I have used Photoshop before but just couldn't get on with it. Far too weird, mainly because of it's Mac roots.

Photo XI seems to have lots of photo touch up stuff in it but If you are doing lots of photo stuff then Adobe Photoshop Elements will give far better results, but if you want a good all round graphics editor then Paintshop Pro is great.

The Gimp has come a long way for a freebie but still doesn't do it for me.

I've used Paint Shop Pro since V.9 as well as Animation Shop 3 (it no longer comes with PSP, since Corel took over Jasc's product; you have to purchase it separately.) I love it; since V.10 they've included a nice learning center that you can use while working. I highly recommend PSP for anyone who wants a quality app. at a fraction of the cost of Photoshop.

I do intend to make the move to Photoshop one of these days (when I can justify 500-600 dollars.)

I've used PSP on all our work, from our website to our models packs and even in all our games. It's a great product, with plenty of support around the web.

I don't plan on upgrading to PSP XI though, as it doesn't add enough features for me to justify the expense at this time. I'll wait to see what they come up with next.

I suppliment it with a few filters from AlienSkin, which really add to it's usefulness.

I also know of a free program that will convert all those free PS brush packs, into .png format; so you can use them in PSP (especially all those nice grunge brushes floating around the web).

-Keith

Incidentally, my signature below was made in PSP with a few AlienSkin filters.

I have PSP9 and PhotoshopCS, and the 2 are quite similar, but really I use PSP9 a lot more, probably because it's more straightforward and technical I think. The brushes and general painting in Photoshop is better, but for our needs, like texturing or drawing fonts, I think PSP outclasses it, sometimes I find that Photoshop lacks the most simple tools, or at least makes it difficult to find them.

It's good to have both, because I like Photoshops artistic nature, but if I had to choose, then it would be PSP9. PSP3 is ancient, but is free, and great for pixel art.

Paint Shop Pro
Version 3.12-32
is my default graphics editor.

I did get PSP7 in the DBC 2 disc set original boxed edition, but I've never gotten around to upgrading yet.

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

I mainly use Photoshop for most of my photo work and it really is 'king', but I keep a copy of PaintShop Pro 5 installed for speed. We have licenses for versions up to 8 (I think) but PaintShop Pro 5 loads so fast and is perfect for quick cropping and pixel work etc. After that I always thought PSP got a bit bloated and slow.
I haven't used a recent version of PSP so I don't know how far it has come, but does it include the Pantone references now like PhotoShop does? They are worth a fortune in themselves, but even so, I think PhotoShop is overpriced. PSP is certainly an excellent budget alternative for most work.
The Gimp wasn't very stable on the Windows platform the last time I tried it but seemed very capable under Linux. I would expect it has improved a lot so might be worth trying out.

From what Corel says, PSP is as fast as it's ever been at version 10, dunno about 11. I had version 7 as well, and PSP 10 does load and work faster.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered the key last night. It's $10 cheaper than I thought. I did it after realizing how GREAT the batch process system is. Dealing mostly with word and card games, you don't know how handy it is to have an app run through them all, apply something, resize, etc. then save as into a different folder. So handy!

PSP8 is still good for me. Plus it was a great price at the time considering it was the latest version (£10 for full version with proper DVD case and not OEM).

Cheers

Myself, I run on PSP 10.

Had PSP 9 for a while, although it was plagued by quite alot of nasty bugs, so I upgraded to 10, which seems far stabler.

The only mild qualm I have with PSP is that it's dog slow on larger files (Try an A3 size image @ 200 px/inch, and you'll see what I mean)

Yeah, V9.0 has quite a few annoying bugs but there is an official 9.0.1 patch that fixes them all that I've been using for ages.

Shame that Animation Shop is not included anymore as I use it on the odd occasion to do animated gifs for websites for clients that demand them. Personally I hate animated gifs on business web sites. Makes them look tacky.

I also agree that trying to edit huge files is not the speediest of things and I have had a few huge files sent to me recently to tinker with. It does make a good attempt at loading photoshop layered files though.
