Knowing how Windows XP installations are heavily tied to the hardware, I find it amazing that an installation from one laptop will even boot in another laptop without a BSOD.

Unless you are lucky enough to have exactly the same model laptop as he had...

XP complained a lot, but it did boot. I think I had to boot into safe mode.

Unfortunately, by getting WinXP to boot up I've probably put my "fingerprints" (for want of a better analogy) all over the disk. Still I wasn't to know I was going to be sold a second hand disk as first hand which once belong to a not-very-tech-savvy conman.

I haven't had a response from the solicitors... snotty bastards.

It turns out that the HDD was seized by police previously, and subsequently returned to the owner. The value of the HDD is much greater than I (and the police) had realised, according to the defense team.

The solicitor I spoke to couldn't believe that the police said that "no-one has raised a complaint [against the defendant], therefore you can come and pick up the HDD". There is, apparently, a huge investigation being carried out.

Wow... this is just like a movie.

go to www.fbi.gov and I think theres a link for sbmitting evidence. if the guy is in the National Newspaper theres a good chance he's wanted by the FBI... I'd go with that
