does anyone think this computer will handle the 8800 card?

- AMD Athlon 3000+ processor ~2.0GHz
- 80 GB HDD (i only use 10gb)
- pretty crappy motherboard
- currently runs NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT

i would like to know because I want one

Kieran,
The 8800 series has a pretty big fan cover and takes the room of two slots, so if you don't have a free slot next to your video
card slot, it won't fit.

And as Grandma point out it is PCIe Express, and the 8800s require
a 500 watt psu. I think the 8600s will be less power hungry as well.

Next month nVidia will have the 8600 series out that will be cheaper and work for a single slot, so just my 2 cents, but I would wait.

As you're currently using geforce 7600, i can assume your motheboard supports PCI-Express. Then the only thing you need to worry about is if your PSU is powerfull enough since these new graphic cards require some crazy power.

What ram slot won't work with Vista, or why is that?

I reccomend upgrading your PSU to 500 watts. For the problem RAM slot, just open up your PC, and change the slot that the RAM is in to any other RAM slot.

yeah my PSU is 350 watts
as for the RAM problem, thanks for the help but i don't think you quite understood what I mean't.

I have a 512mb ram chip which works in either of the 3 slots. when I ass another 512mb ram chip, my computer doesn't load. I have tried all possible slot combinations

are the ram chips of the same exact make? if you put in 2 diffrent makers of ram ie corsair and kingston then thats the problem you run into or even the same maker of the ram but ram chip 1 operates at 400mhz while ram chip 2 does not. Thats why i buy all my ram in bundles of 2 or so =)

Yep, you should really stick to one brand and speed of RAM. In some cases it does work, but i wouldn't recommend it.

In some cases you need to adjust the ram timings manually, if you configure your ram timings to the slower stick they both should work. As long as they can both operate at the same bus rate.

To find the ram timings for your sticks, you'll need to visit the manufacturer's website.
