Damn M$ for their non-downgrade o/s, as some of you know ii recently installed vista, but found out half of the programs didn't work (such as power director and nero) so i decided to downgrade back to win2k to find out that...

VISTA HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOT OPTIONS!!!!

which has me really annoyed, and i can't find anyway around it, can anyone help me sort this out without having to re-install vista (if thats even possible)?

edit: sorry turns out he installed winxp, i got my dad to do the installation (as i wasn't sure how to install win2k) and he installed winxp instead and set it for performance so it looks like win2k, sorry my bad.

If you know the boot partition value that Vista is stored on, you need to modify the file called boot.ini which is located on your Win2k root folder. It will be hidden, so you'll need to modify your Windows Exporer view folder settings in order to open the file.

Just becareful though because if you fiddle with this file incorrectly, you may well prevent win2k from booting up aswell.

That sounds about right. Just don't modify your Win2k boot entry

Try it and see if you can select it for booting up.

The problem is you installed the older OS *after* Vista. Vista uses a totally different boot system (it doesn't use the 2K style bootloader at all, which is why installing XP killed it.

If you had installed XP first and THEN Vista, they would both work perfectly because Vista is intelligent enough to realise XP exists and gives you a boot menu automatically allowing you to select either OS. If it's not too much hassle, just install them again in that order XP - Vista, and they'll work just fine together (mine do!).

Can't he just hit F8 or is it F10 to get the boot menu? Or is the boot menu only for selecting which CD-rom drive to boot from?

Since he has XP installed, he should just do a clean install of Vista to another partition or drive.
He will probably have to call MS and get a new install number
after it's up and running. It will run but can't be activated online without the new number.
Not too big a deal, but annoying.
