i have just bought a new graphics card, i have installed it fine, but it is laaaaging out my pc and video files arent loading, i think it may be to do with my ram being ddr and the graphics card being ddr2 apart from this everything else is compatable, can someone help clear this up for me.

i do have some pretty up to date drivers, but i tried installing the one on the cd that came with it (downgrading), but it freezes half way through the installation, i will try to install the latest though.

EDIT: are you sure it isnt a problem with the ram though?

Is it AGP or PCI-E?

Did you install the extra power feed? It might nee more power than your motherboard can supply.

The type of RAM your GPU uses doesn't matter, are you sure your PSU can handle the card? because if it can't you may get issues similar to this, if not you may have a faulty card etc, other than that I have no idea as your post is rather vague.

Different slot types - if he'd fit one type in the wrong hole, he'd have more than lag issues hehe.

Did you uninstall the old drivers (eg, if they were ATI)?

I asked if it was AGP or PCI-E because the AGP version requires a molex power splitter to get extra power from the PSU, but i just noticed it says AGP in his title.. doh! If the molex splitter is connected then it is likly his PSU doesn't have enough watts in it. Most places I've read say you need more than 300watts.

AGP note it has a power molex at the right end of the board.

PCI-E no extra power required has no molex power connector

yeah i have returned it and the person at the retailer said it was probably a power supply problem, in the next few days though im going to check what my wattage is and then find either a card that works with that or get a new power supply as well

anyway the reason im buying this card is this:

i bought my PC second hand at a place called uptime games (its a gaming pc, awsome deal too $520 for the lot), they had 2 swap some parts out though and the person who did that on mine forgot to plug the graphics card fan in, so it was overheating i got it fixed, but i found that it was permanently damaged because it keeps on having problems and now its gotten to the stage where it cant play Half-Life: Source (number 1!) without screwing up (altough it can play half life 2, cs:Source, etc. fine and with no probs, its weird)

anyway thanks for the help

If you want to avoid the power supply hassels with AGP graphics try a Nvidia 6200 128bit memory bus version (NOT 64 bit version its slow) or a nVidia 5700 (pixel shader 2.0 though) they're not bad for £30 ish.

I got these results with a 6200 and just a 1.2Ghz Celeron (4x AGP), which saved it from the bin!

Anyone thinking of buying a 2nd user PC should try and get one with a PCI-E slot if they can as the graphics cards for PCI-E are cheaper and faster. You could argue that they don't make AGP cards anymore because they are often PCI-E cards with an AGP bridge chip (which is why the cost more)!

AGP has more complications in that there isn't a single AGP slot standard. There are about 3-4 different slots with two different voltages. If a card doesn't say it is AGP 4x compatible there is a chance it wont run in an old AGP slot!

my motherboard is a AGP 8x, thanks for the help
im also trying to get this card so that i can play Battlefield 2
and to get the experience i need to build a pc from scratch
but ill probably have a new card when my next pay check comes in (a week or so)
i just need to check my power supply first, i never knew that that had anything to do with it, but i guess you have to learn somewhere
thanks again for the help

Lucifer if you know of a faster graphics card that doesn't require a molex power boost then just say it. Those two are the fastest I know that are suitible for older AGP style PCs without a PSU upgrade. The 6200 is also a low profile option which is why I used it. The card could probably produce better results if your CPU was 2.4Ghz (8x AGP) or something like that.
