My friend and I r arguing about the pronunciation of the word "linux" hes says its LIN-ix and I say its LINE-ux

But dude... I was always told that it was named after Linus someone-or-other... so shouldnt it sound like Linus except with an X???

that is so lame.... ive said it LINE-ux my whole life and and wasnt until the first time i had ever heard it pronounced (from him) did i ever question its pronunciation..... i feel retarded

I think when it first became popular in the 90s everyone was calling it LINE-ux, until we started learning about its developer, Linus, who pronounces his name LIN-us. Therefore, two-and-two together, yadda yadda yadda.

I have a little chukkle every time I hear an American pronounce 'Nike', Ni-key lol there is no 'y' on the end of the word!

i think it is pronounced Ni-key...

i hate to use wikipedia as a reference, but they list it as being pronounced "(IPA: /naɪki/)"

Nor is there a 'y' on the on 'me', but it's pronounced with a 'y' sound. Pronunciation is, in plenty of cases, little or nothing to do with the exact spelling of a words; tons of words are said in a completely different way to how they are spelt/would be said phonetically

EDIT: And Nike is pronounced like that

Well lite is pronounced the same as light and look at that spelling!
