Every time I browse these forums I keep seeing threads with titles such as "Help me!" or "big problem", or "why is this happenin?" to name a few. This is especially apparant in this forum (Dark Basic Classic) and it is mainly people who are new to programming (noobs!) who are doing this. So, may I suggest that whenever you post in the forums, MAKE IT CLEAR IN THE TITLE OF A NEW THREAD WHAT YOU NEED HELP WITH! That way, more people are actually going to bother looking at the thread, therefore you'll get help faster. Just a suggestion, but I can't be the only person who is getting fed up with non-descriptive thread titles.

[Edit] no offence implied by the term "noob", as it seems to be the accepted norm on these forums. It's not to imply that a person is bad at programming, it's just to imply that they are a beginner, and that perhaps people that help them can explain things more clearly to noobs. I was a noob once and I know just how daunting the early stages of programming can be, even on the DB languages.

yes it is irritating, but it happens more in the newcomers board than in this one...

Just as I'm sure that people new to programming are also fed up with being branded:

Quote: "noobs!"

A newcomer to programming isn't necessarily a crap programmer, just an inexperienced one. These days, the noob brand implies that they're crap...

That said, I definately do agree threads like "need help" don't make me want to go in and help right away...

It's a shame I can't edit the subject line of all of these posts to "Poor Topic Subject - Please Ignore!"

Unfortunately, it's not an option...

While on the subject of topic lines, what also really ticks me off are people on the Newcomers board who can't be bothered to add a [DBC] or [DBP] at the end to let us know what version they are using.

It's not like it's not clearly stated in the stickies! One says "Please state the language used! DBC/DBP".

I can't imagine hour many hours of my life have been wasted answering people's questions only to find out my help was no use because they use a different version of DB to the one I was answering with! Damn time-wasters!

Just to add my two penneth to the list of forum annoyances .... what bugs the heck out of me is when someone asks a question that's obviously been asked before, and some one replies with an answer along the lines of 'use the search button' or 'google it'. Obviously we all wish that the moron in question HAD used the search button, but for those of us that actually do, what do we find when we do a search on a topic? Twenty threads with the answer 'use the search button'. SO not helpful! Can I suggest that the response to a question that has been asked before is either the answer accompanied by an appropriate noob slapping insult, a refering link to a thread that actually has the answer accompanied by the said admonishment, or no response at all - that way we don't dilute the search results with questions that have no answers.

Oh - and Sonic, yes I agree with the point you make about non-specific titles, for the main reason that it has no keywords for the search engine to pick up when doing a search for a topic. Nobody will ever find the best code snippet ever written if the title for the code snippet is 'the best code snippet ever written'!

I agree that people ought to post what version they are using and that titles ought to be descriptive, but doesn't a mod have to put these through (for new people at least)? Can't they simply be rejected by the mods?

Furthermore, if you respond to a title that does not list the version or uses an undescriptive title, what are you really saying to that person and everyone else that reads your posts? You're saying that it really doesn't matter, you'll respond anyway. If you don't want to waste your time (and I don't blame you) then simply don't respond to these types of posts. It's nice of you to want to help, but you're kind of feeding the fire by responding to these.

Yes, but then you have the problem that their post doesn't appear and they don't know why.

I'm currently pushing for the Newcomers board to be DB Pro only and have every DBC related post on there forced here.

There's little traffic on here these days so this board would benefit - and at the same time negate the need for users to state which version they have on the Newcomers board.

@ TDK Good idea. Is it possible to totally separate both boards completely, so that you would have a DBP section with discussion, newcomers, snippets, 20 liners, 3D Chat, etc. and also a DBC section that has the same?

Apparently not, as I see the Newcomers Corner now has DB Pro added to it.
