Does anyone know what the tech job market is like right now in Australia? More specifically around NSW. Is the market growing or shrinking or what?

The market's going ok, but there's a massive decline/shortage of programmers in the development industry right now, so it's a perfect time to get that job in I.T!

Phaelax,

If you're looking for an IT job, you go without work.

But, to be honest, I think the same can be said for most places right now too. It's not like IT is getting smaller

Depending on what kind of specific job you want (game programmer, apps programmer, etc), would dictate where you want to go to a large extent.

The major game-dev houses in Aust. are in Melbourne (Victoria), but then, the IT industry is strong all over Aust., so it's your choice

there is 17 game dev companies in QLD as well.
NSW has the most jobs for IT followed by a close 2nd to melbourne.
melbourne is the hub of our pacific link so there is more Internet jobs down there.
Brisbane has become the media hub over many other places.
Animal Logic would be an awesome place to get into SPFX

I'm looking more for a position as a java developer hopefully. Game programmer would be cool, but its just a hobby for me. I don't really have the background in C++.

Thanks for the info guys.

Australia rocks for everyone! but I don't think there is a huge abundance of jobs for IT sorts now, we all got on that bandwagon when there was like 5 years ago. But game dev wise yeah pandemic, a few other dev houses here in Melbourne as well.

Go to one of those third world countries and become a doctor (I'm sure all you need to know how to do is pronounce someone as sick, then stick 'em with a needle... At least, that's all I ever see them do on those damned ads!).
It'd be a good way to use your degree

But seriously, Australia's a beautiful place, so you couldn't have picked a better location to start your new life.

Just make sure you get a coastal area, and preferably (for me at least) nowhere near a city - They're full of wogs, pollution and pigeons
Used to live in Sydney when I was younger... Damn am I glad I live on the coast now about 2 hours freeway drive from the city!

wog in Britain has some racial undertones due to a black comic character named Golliwog (which has long been banned) and I believe it is the same in Australia as it is used to label immigrants. Either way it is not a very nice term to use.

Wikiepedia mentions it as a reference to illnesses too;

Quote: "Wog was originally used in Australia as a slang term for illnesses such as colds, the flu or malaria. This usage has been in existence since at least the early 1940s. It is recorded in the 1941 Popular Dictionary of Australian Slang by S. J. Baker as meaning a germ or parasite.[1]

Another use of the term, which dates from 1909, was to describe insects and grubs, particularly if they were hunting insects or regarded as being unpleasant in some way.[1]"

its actually not as bad as perceived down under.
we have a show "wogs out of work"
we have a tv show "pizza" full of wogs.
Australia is not as politically correct then some places. Its silly to take things too far.
Its a bit of fun if the tone of the word is not used with a harsh angle.
shuddao you bloody wog is still not as bad as you might think.

Well there you go, either that or the cities are full of insects. Language is a strange thing sometimes.

Haha, yeah, indi's right, I didn't mean it in a derogitory way.
I just used it to lump together all the ethnic groups

I never even thought that 'wog' could mean a racial slur, whoops!

Hey I bought one of them when I visited the Coswalds in the UK about 5 years ago. Was very surprised to see them out on display at a store!

western oriental gentleman. in other words lebbo's italians greeks etc. Been in use for ages and it can be seen as derrogatory if you use it at school but they call themselves wogs anyway so no one really cares. Just the same as calling anglo's "skips" (after the kangaroo "skippy")

Oddly I've never been very big for beaches or coastal property. I prefer a suburb just outside a major city. I'd live in the middle of the city if parking wasn't an issue.

Hmm, I'm guessing 90's isn't considered a heatwave is it? 95 degrees usually sets the highest it'll ever get here.
