I had this idea just there, where people could rate threads, say 1 to 5 stars or something. It would be a good thing to have, and also would highlight all the really good (and really bad) threads worth seeing

Anyone else agree?

its not a bad idea, but a lot of people would get offended, though in the end, those folk are the ones not labeling they're subjects correctly and asking things that are already avaiable.

I see no point unless it's moderator only as guests are idiots, woo let's rate everything 1 star etc.

I believe that is one of the reasons that Rich never implemented any rating systems, either for threads, posts or users. In the end, if it's open to all, it all becomes just a popularity contest.

Then there's the suggestion about it being only open to moderators - To be honest, I don't want to be your rating system. There's also the problem that something I might rate as interesting may not interest you at all, and vice versa. Besides, we already have a moderator mechanism for useful threads - any thread that is generally useful to a large number of people is stickied for a while.

Rating can work - but you need to make it complicated to be fair.

Something like - if I vote 5* for this thread and I have an above average rating tendancy, then my vote would be weighed down. Equally, if I voted 1* and my average was low then my vote would get weighed up a little. That way everyone should be voting on a similar field.

Of course the overhead for that would be pretty huge.

I agree we do need a system like that though - maybe a Digg-like system? There are some real GOLD threads in this forum and the majority go unnoticed.

What about a favourites system (which I suppose would be the same as a Digg system) where you flag a topic as favourite and then there can be a way of listing the top flagged favourite topics from the past 24 hours/2 days/1 week/1 month/1 year/all time. Plus you have your own favourites list which goes with you no matter where you login. I suppose its a hybrid or Del.icou.us and Digg?

I like what Nicholas said and I'm all for a type of rating system. It'd at least help me channel the little time I spend on this forum to things that are really worth reading and I'm sure there's lots around that go unnoticed.

Though, how about instead of giving negative ratings, you only give positive ratings and the thread accumulates these 'points'? It would limit the possibility for it becoming a popularity contest a bit - at least then the most hated people on the forum won't have negative ratings!

Nemisis - that could work, although you'd still need to be able to filter by "most popular today, this week, this month, all time" otherwise older posts could dominate the top ranks.

I disagree with the rating thing. If somebody dosent like you they just rate all your posts 1 star. There's really no need for it.

Thats why I suggested weighing the Rating. You could even take it to a per-user average.

This issue could also be circumvented by using the idea posted earlier about only giving positive votes. That way, even is someone REALLY didn't like you to the point where they bullied you on a forum then they worst they could do is simply not vote. Any vote they DID give you would count towards putting that topic higher.

Quote: "don't think a rating system is good."

Nicely elaborated.

Quote: "we had a rating system about 5 forums ago and it didnt work."

Indi - what was wrong with it? Did it suffer the rating spamming issue?

Quote: "I think stickie threads are good enough to hilite specific threads. Anything else and it will be too much"

I agree - sticky is fine for an individual thread... but it doesn't really work for older threads. There might be a fantastic old thread explaining how to use Advanced Terrain or something. That would never get stickied and 2 weeks after the last post, it would get lost in the depths of the forum. Mix into that the other thousand posts on that topic and your search box is slightly less usefull than it should be as you just end up with a list of topics and no idea which one is the "best".

Quote: "So you want this to be 1 step closer to a Vbulletin?"

Never used it - but why does speculation about introducing a feature mean we are taking steps closer to cloning a popular piece of BB Software? If a system works - why not use it (even if someone else is already using it)? Not the best arguement against a voting system in the world...
(I know you were not being 100% serious)

I think it might be better if you had a mod only rating system. The mods who moderate the forums could recommend threads they really like. Then(if possible) there could be a separate board where all the recommended threads go. This could also help people know about some other cool threads in boards they usually don't go too.

Just an idea.

...I really dont see the point. If I see a thread about dryer lint, and everyone votes it's good, am I going to click it? No... The current system where threads turn red when popular is good enough. All it takes is 1 click to check the first few posts to see if the thread is interesting or not.

I do, however, seriously think the search feature could do with the suggestions Ive made numerous times.

- Mods can add keywords to a thread, and the search looks through these keywords. Solves the problem of newbies naming threads like "Help!".
- Users can add key words to their thread on creation.
- The forum search should have a drop down box that lets you select what board to search in, instead of going to a board, then clicking search, then selecting "This board only".
- The search should first search for threads containing every word in the search phrase, then search for threads containing the exact phrase. Right now, it only does the latter, which means typing "FPS Shooting Help" wont show anything.
- There should be a feature to find all of the recent threads you've posted in.

All those features you described ruccus i would actually agree on. I think they would be more useful than rating system.

@Nicholas Thomas
-if you weighed the scores then what would be the point of voting since your vote gets altered anyways.

I entirely agree that a "start from scratch" search system would be a better sollution, but search algorithms are not quite as easy as they sound. Then again, neither is a weighted voting system.

@LD52:
Quote: "if you weighed the scores then what would be the point of voting since your vote gets altered anyways."

Because it makes the voting "fair". If I have a tendancy to vote below the community average then my vote "worth" should be scaled up. If I vote 2/5 of a topic and I have a tendancy to be tight with my votes then that 2 could easily be "worth" more than someone else who simply rates everything else 5/5. Equally, if my voting average is above the community average then my votes would get scaled down a little (eg, me voting 5/5 could potentially be worth less than someone voting 3 or 4 out of 5 as my view on the world might be that everything is unarguably fantastic!)

@Nicholas Thomas
I guess that makes sense, It seems like a good idea.

@-
I still am sort of unsure that this would be a very good idea of a voting system.

I have one question on the voting system if it were made would the higher rated posts be on the top and the lower rated posts be lower ?
or would the posts be in any order just with a rating beside them ?

If I were to do it... I'd make a seperate "view" where you could filter/order by a number of options. Eg, "I want to see all posts which are rated 3* or higher in the last week relating to collision in the FPSC forum".

But thats me

to be honest, i was only being sarcastic about the negative star thing, i hope no one took me too seriously

i've gotta say, the thought of people deliberatly voting threads down because of who wrote them never even occured to me. Are there really such rivalries on these boards?

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Yes Manic Such Rivalry's are on the boards... You are my arch-nemesis jokes I don't think there are any real rivalries atleast that i know of but lets say someone new joins and they make a post. He/she make nooby mistakes so He/she gets flamed then He/She is mad and starts voting posts down... that is what i think might be bad...

If we're on the topic of general improvements, why not a feature for flagging threads. There are some I've wanted to save to look back on and I can't (favorites are only for TGC pages if I'm not mistaken). Also, RUCCUS's search improvements are all good.

We're not - we're talking about a voting system

For flagging, etc... User your bookmarks or something like Del.icio.us.

@Manic: There are some rivalries - but they're more often immature vendeta's... Eg someone who got noob slapped might take it out on a moderators posts by "down voting" them. Of course, this process would simply be delaying them going outdoors and getting a life... But thats the web for you! You have to develop features with moron's in mind.

Bizar - the problem with stickies is covered by what IanM said in the 6th post...

Although he wasn't referring to stickies, the point stands. What interested a Mod might not interest you and I (and vice versa).

I liked Nicholas' favorites idea. There are quite a few threads worth keeping track of that won't get stickied. The long thread on Compiler theory, for example.

That's why we have Favourites in IE and Bookmarks in Firefox. Is it really that difficult to self-organize instead of relying on a system admin to build redundant tools for us when he could be working on something more advantageous?

Just noticed we already have favourites in this forum, and I'd completely forgotten about them.
One of the threads that I'd saved:
"L33T coder. Willing to make a sub-par effort. Right here"
That brings back memories... pity it won't let me see the thread, saying "that board is hidden from view."

[edit] Oops, I drifted away from the topic in nostalgia, didn't I?
To get back to it, Nicholas' idea (if I understood correctly) is about more than just recording bookmarks, it's also about sharing them around. Think of it as a community-based index of threads worth reading.

What about when you post, you can tick a box to say whether you like the thread. This way you have to post to vote, and everybody should be able to see which posts chose this. This could be shown in a seperate box from views and posts. Also, when a post is deleted and it rated, its rating is removed. Also, the author should not be able to rate it as good, and each user should only be allowed to rate each thread once.
The amount of posts with GOOD checked would show how good the thread was.

I agree, several threads that are very popular should be stickied while others un-stickied, especially when a bunch of people ask. Not saying mods don't do that, but I can think of a few threads that deserve it.

One possible problem is that some people would only rate their favourite threads, whilst others would only rate threads they hated.

@Nex - that's solved by the "only giving positive ratings" thing. Then the worst someone can do to you is not vote at all.
