I was looking through the manual and stuff, and lo and behold it says only up to 256 connects are allowed in DarkBasic multiplayer games. WHAT!?! That cannot be true. If it is...I hope it's fixed in the next patch. If i am wrong..please someone say so!

Sorry, but 256 people at the one time is correct. However, one thing you could do if you wanted more is to use more than one server program, transferring people from one to the other when you change areas. I wouldnt be able to tell you how though, just know it can be done.

Whatever I did I didn't do it!

Ya that method is how other MMORPGs work any ways.

I'm still waiting for the day that someone is able to write a game in DBPro that handles 25 players, let alone 256. Everyone seems to think "what a limitation!" when in reality how many concurrent sessions are there in Counter Strike, BHD, Q3, Unreal, etc? Even in "MMORPGs" things are zoned. You probably walk out of a forest and onto a new server for all you know.

Yeah it might be 256 but thats ok.(not like any one has the ability to make a online rpg like Ultima)
If You do checklist quantity for the muiltiplayer command it will only go up to 255 that it can hold. So i guess if you do a checlist for net players it will only show 255 that are on not 256.

AMD Atherlon 2400+ XP, 380 DDr memeory, ATI Radeon 9000 64 DDR.

And a Katana.

Well Rich in less then a year you'll see one. Me and my buddy are writing a game off the old Buck Rogers XXVc RPG by TSR. Were making it massively multiplayer and hopefully in a few months from now we'll have something decent to show.

ONLY 256?

man, you must have a hell of a web connection if that's a major limitation on you

im currently working on kinda of a delta force game (before you laugh, no i don't expect it to come out anywhere near as good), and the 256 player limit is plenty!

think about it, if you've ever played delta force, then you'll notice there are only ever 4 pages of public games. if you average each game at 8 players, and 10 games to a page, then that means there are never more than 80 games and 320 people online, and there are absolutely TONS of games going on at the same time there, and it seems like there are tons of people!

personally, i'd be very impressed if you could make a game that meets the limits...

Having people tell you "Well no one is talented enough to write a DB program that can handle more than 8 players." Thats like saying only losers write programs in DB. I actually think that DB Pro is awesome and I have plans for a MMORPG. But im not gonna rush or overestimate myself. Ive done alot of planning and research before starting the code. DB has not been out very long so lets give the programmmers some time and see what they come out with.

"DB has not been out very long"
its been out long enough.
nobody said that nobodies talented enough to do anything, it would just be very difficult to get so many connections running at the same time with any kind of stability

you really should try to do something before you start making out as its not good enough for you

also I think you will find that 256 is a DirectX limit, Db uses the DirectX netplay thingy , so it has the same limitations as DirectX, and if you are on 56k modem then running 25 players a time in game with a decent framerate is pushing your luck, expect to see frequent dropouts and misses during play, as was said you can use multiple servers and other tricks to squeeze more out of the system but unless you have a main server in your spare room its unlikley you will run out of allocations for your players, then again you could open two servers and use channels 1 to 255 for one set of players and send the other 256 to the other server on channel 256, you would hit bandwidth problems (maybe) but it would be possible, then you could daisy chain servers to get more people online, just remember that someone somewhere may be on a 28k modem and somewhat peeved to find your server has to send 20k of data for each update to every player, framerates of just over 1 will not be popular (although you could make an online game for net server admins ), cheers.

Mentor.
